I'm just happy that after Ypsi hijacked another conversation to nitpick along Sikma lines, he vowed never to talk about Sikma-as-d3-player again. Everything else is secondary to that.

On Ypsi's next post about the Sikma issue, he will claim that he was mis-quoted.  The guy is like clockwork.

We're chest-deep in the Sea of Semantics here, but the implication is pretty strong that when you call someone a "D3 alumnus" it means that they attended a school when it was a member of the division. It's clearly different than saying that someone is "an alumnus of a D3 school" (which Sikma, Porter, and Pfund all are), because in the prima facie reading of that phrase the property in question (D3 status) is not conferred upon the subject (the alumnus). It's simply conferred upon the school. Of course, without a further explanation that the school's affiliation has changed over time, the listener/reader might infer that that D3 status does belong to the subject, so it is still open to being misconstrued; Mike's suggestion in post #6806 that Sikma be referred to as having "played for a school that became D3" prevents such misconceptions, even if it isn't phrased quite as concisely. And it works for Porter and Pfund as well.

But for the purposes of the article and the statement being made, it makes sense.  There are so few people in this world who would even be able to tell you that Wheaton was ever anything but d3, let alone the year.  If it was a story for posting on this board, then more clarification would be necessary, but on the front page, I think it made its point well and accurately.

I believe the position has been filled within by Nate Frank.  I heard that a month ago from a couple wheatonites that are close to the program.

Sorry it took me a few days to find the piece, but thanks for being way more on top of the game than me TBF. It looks like "other duties as assigned" involves Nate also getting my dream job of being Brett Markanka's assistant.

I wonder if this new development means that I need to try to stop being scared of Nate  :D :-[

speaking of the once mitey crusaders

i have run into dave howard, jr. this week

long time wheaties will remember howard as a wrestlers for the crusaders.  his father was a missionary and dh,j grew up on the mission field (I believe costa rica).

during his college days howard wrestled at about 140 pounds.

he would be in the super-heavyweight classification now.

he currently is the dean of a seminary - i believe in minneapolis.

Dave Howard, Jr would also have to be the nephew/brother-in-law of famous Wheaton alums Jim and Elisabeth Elliot (formerly Howard), no? I believe I remember reading in Elisabeth Elliot's book "Passion and Purity" that Jim and Dave Howard Sr (?) were good friends.

As long as we are talking about Wheaton wrestling (sort of....) Wheaton has their new list of recruits up here http://www.wheaton.edu/Athletics/wrestling/index.html.  Too bad North Park no longer has wrestling, looks like the kid from Heritage Christian in Wisconsin would fit right in name wise!

I disagree, because this website is the one place in the world where such distinctions do matter. One reason why is because there are people among the site's viewers who are aware of D3 (and Wheaton) history. The other reason is that Pat is a careful journalist and editor whose professionalism is reflected in the quality of this site.

There's two Swedish-Americans listed among Wheaton's wrestling recruits, Lars Skoglund (the kid from Wisconsin that you mentioned), and Tim Hedberg from Florida. I knew a lot more Hedbergs at North Park than Skoglunds -- in fact, I knew two Tim Hedbergs who matriculated at Foster & Kedzie, one from Minneapolis and the other from Ashtabula, Ohio. The Park did have a basketball player during my era named Brent Skoglund (from Taft on the Northwest Side). Skogs could jump out of the gym, but he never made it past the JV level for the Vikings.

Dumping the wrestling program in the early '80s was a case in which North Park was ahead of the curve on a collegiate trend. With schools dropping their wrestling programs left and right over the past decade (and, no, this is not a cue for another Title IX debate, Mark  :D), one has to wonder if it'll continue to be a CCIW-sanctioned sport if the attrition trend continues. Only five CCIW schools have wrestling teams, which makes it the only sport in the league in which as many as three schools don't participate.

Speaking of Wheaties with very Swedish-American names, I wonder whatever became of Bjorn Johnson. The CCIW room on d3football.com has become a whole lot less fun to read ever since the Mad Swede ended up on the side of a milk carton.

* Franklin Savings Tip-Off Tournament @ Mount St. Joseph
^ Holiday Tourney @ San Diego, CA

The tourney in San Diego is being set up by Lake Forest head coach Chris Conger. The idea of D3 snowbirds staging their own warm-weather tournament might be something of a growing trend; I know that Whitworth has been organizing such a tournament in Hawaii for several years now, and there may be others. The idea is to use the annual snowbird trip but to avoid all of the pitfalls of being an unknown team far away from home at the mercy of the host school in terms of things like fees, lodging, meals ... and referees.

Add a couple more freshman recruits to NPU's list: Lukas Dahlstrom, a 6'1 combo guard out of Hanover, New Hampshire, and Frank Theodorakakis, a 6'6 forward from Niles West. Dahlstrom sounds like he has potential; he was an All-Stater in NH (who knows what that means, though), and the fact that NPU beat out Wash U and Wheaton for him indicates that he's a top-notch student. He could pan out for the Park somewhere down the road. Theodorakakis definitely needs a couple of years in the weight room and on the JV team before he's likely to have his chance.

NPU apparently has seven incoming freshmen -- the two mentioned above plus the previously-discussed trio of Nick Williams, Joe Capalbo, and Dan Oziminski. I'm not sure about the identity of the other two.

It sounds like a good class, albeit a guard-heavy one. A huge weakness for the Vikings in recent years has been their shooting, which has just been awful by CCIW standards. The coaching staff took great pains to try and correct that by bringing in Capalbo and Oziminski, who were the two top trey shooters in Lake County last season. The coaches feel that those two, plus Williams and Dahlstrom, could all turn out to be really solid CCIW perimeter players down the line.

What will make the difference between a good crop of newbies and an exceptional one, however, are the incoming transfers. There are eight possible transfers in the pipeline for the Park (none of whom I am going to name), and which of them and how many of them decide to enroll at NPU will most likely tell the tale for Brenegan's and Schafer's recruiting efforts this past year. Three of them appear to be close to being in the fold, with the other five still up in the air.

Greg, this article was linked on the football message board.  Perhaps this is one of the other 2 incoming freshman recruits?
