Anyone know what happened to John Pietkiewicz after his early departure from Wheaton? Did he even show up on campus this year? I know that Calvin/Hope were somewhat interested in him last year and wondered where he ended up.

I was definitely bummed when my dad told me about Brian.  I was looking forward to getting to se ehim play in the Crackerbox again (and likely get beat...).  I know he has to be very disappointed.  Here's hoping he can recover and maybe get some time on the court in next year.

The Carthage roster and profiles are now updated:

http://www.carthage.edu/athletics/index.cfm?page=19

The roster link takes you to the swimming roster. ???

Looking at the profiles, it doesn't look like Bosko brought in much size. It looks like the Franciskovic and Schlemm are about it as far as big guys.

I count nine players that saw action last year, who had eligibility remaining, who aren't on this year's roster. I know about Jeffery transferring, what's up with Imani, Hart, Lee, Guay, etc. Do you think this is a big concern, K-mark? I know Bosko always has a ton of guys in the program (24 this year). Is that kind of attrition common?

Its interesting that it says that Eric Moore is a good 3pt shooter. I never saw him take a single shot farther back than the free-throw line. His shot is so goofy I can't imagine it even getting to the rim.

dansand,

I noticed that the link to the roster showed the swimming team the other day and didn't realize it was still not fixed.

I knew there were a number of players not coming back so it wasn't a total surprise.  For those who don't recall, Imani was 29/30 years old already and having a family along with going to school probably was just to much.  The others, I'm not sure of all the circumstances.  Hart left the team for personal reasons and there was some thought he would come back and play this year but that didn't happen.

The attrition over the last few years has been more prevalent than what I think a program should expect to see but I don't know the exact reasons why so many players haven't been sticking around or if I do hear things I just don't care to share those comments.

You're correct that they do lack some size other than Schlemm and Neb so hopefully that won't affect them as the season progresses.  Whether Schlemm can play to his full potential is the key as far as I see it for now.   I'm always optimistic this time of the year.....so here is hoping the incoming freshmen will be able to provide some needed depth.

Pietkiewicz showed up for the start of the Wheaton school year, had a change of heart, and left. I was told that he had reconsidered his decision to turn his back on playing scholarship-level ball, and after leaving Wheaton he subsequently enrolled at a prep school out east in order to draw some attention from big-time recruiters.

Everyone's pretty eager to stick a fork in Carthage a month before the season even begins, but it should be noted that Bosko did manage to bring in some talent. Scott Fendley is a serious recruit; we've already mentioned transfers Joe Higgins and Milos Vukosavljevic, and I know that Bosko is really high on Richard Williams. Whether they will pan out or not is another matter entirely, but it's not as though Carthage came up empty in recruiting this year.

Aside from the size issue (which may be less of an issue than we think right now, since aside from Elmhurst and North Central it doesn't appear that most CCIW teams have multiple top-notch returning big men who have both height and muscle), I think the big long-term question mark surrounding the Carthage program is the attrition one that Dan brought up. Bosko's had no trouble bringing in talent since the end of the Wiertel/Garnes/McDaniel era. He's had a ton of trouble either keeping it eligible or keeping it on campus at all. I know that it's stating the obvious, but the only way that Carthage is going to get back to the top of the league (same with NPU and Millikin, incidentally) is by bringing in talented freshmen and keeping them in the program without interruption for four years, seasoning the mix as needed with infusions of transfer talent.

Personally, I don't expect Scott Fendley to contribute at all to the Red Men this season.  He's old, slow, and has a murderous commute to Kenosha from his office at Wabash College's Development Department.

Sean Fendley could be a serious contributor, however.   :D

Augie's roster is up. No surprising losses. Kolze and Thomas have been mentioned before and I had heard a while back that Sam Johnson wouldn't be returning. Other than that, everyone eligible appears to be back. Freshman Terrence Green is listed at 6-9 and 164 lbs. I'd say they need to get him in the weight room, but they should probably get him in the cafeteria first. :D Actually, I think Coach G is pretty excited about his potential for down the road.

Good grief, I'm 5'8" and 164 (and my doctor says I'm fine).  Can you say "mini-Manute Bol"!!  [Though I not sure what the point would be of a MINI-Manute Bol!]

I may regret saying this in a year or two, but get that boy to the cafeteria, weight room, cafeteria, weight room, etc.!! ;D ;) ;D

That's hilarious -- I was just assuming there was a guy with smedindy's name on Wabash's team. :)

Heh. Touche, David. But at least give me the "Horseshoes and Hand Grenades Award" for mistaking two very close names.

If d3hoops.com's resident Wally would just use his regular name for posting purposes, instead of subliminally planting it in my head over the past few years, this never would've happened.  ;)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to investigate why Eddy Curry keeps needling the Calvin people over in the MIAA room.  :D

I don't know, either, but I do know that the Mini-Ditka could turn him into a heckuva football player.

I don't see how someone can be 6'9 and weigh 164 pounds without the word "corpse" being a part of the equation. Heck, Jay Alexander is one of the skinniest guys I've ever seen in an NPU uniform, and he is listed at a mere 6'6, 175. And such infamously skeletal CCIW players of yore as David "Stick Figure" Little of Wheaton and Andy Boyden of Illinois Wesleyan were at minimum pushing the 200 mark at 6'10.

Never mind the weight room and the cafeteria for Terrence Green. First thing Giovanine needs to do is find a vein somewhere on that bony frame and insert an IV into it filled with melted Haagen-Dazs.

Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan)

I went to school with a guy 6'10" 180 and that was after a semester in the weight room.  He was the skinniest mug I've ever seen (well outside the pre-draft, post-mission Shawn Bradley, 7'6" 210).
