When the new Top 25 poll comes out later today or tomorrow, there will most likely be 4 or 5 CCIW teams in there.  Here is the stunner:  IWU won't be one of them!  When was the last time there were that many CCIW teams ranked in the TOP 25 and IWU wasn't one of them?   :o

Answer:  Week 4 of the 2006-07 season.  There are 4 CCIW teams ranked right now, and IWU is not one of them.  The CCIW has never had 5 teams ranked in the same week; neither has any other conference.

It would be cool to see the CCIW put 5 in the top 25, but I don't think it happens this week.

Which teams are the 5?  I can't imagine that both NCC and Elmhurst will be in this week.

I mean besides this year.  ;D

NCC will probably not be ranked this week, but Elmhurst most likely will.  They have won 10 straight games and were #29 in the "others receiving votes" when the week 4 poll came out.

How about this one.....if Elmhurst does crack the Top 25, they will be the 6th CCIW team to be ranked at one point during this season thus far.  That's impressive considering there are only 8 teams in the whole league!  When was the last time that happened? If ever?  :o

Besides this year, never.  That was the point of my adding the link to a previous post (Dec. 19, IIRC) which referred to this.  The only other time the CCIW had four ranked teams at once was Week 11 last season: Augie #9, IWU #10, NCC #21, Elmhurst #25.

The WIAC had 6 of its 9 teams ranked at one time or another in the 2000-01 season (all but La Crosse, Oshkosh, and Stout), although #21 Eau Claire was the only one in the final poll.  The CCIW has had 5 teams ranked so far this season, which is a record for this conference.  The WIAC has done this in several seasons; as far as I can tell, no other conference has had 5 teams ranked in one season.

Keep in mind that the poll only dates back to the beginning of the 1999-2000 season.

I think the new poll will have 4 CCIW teams ranked.  I think Augie will be the highest in the area of 7-12,  then Carthage and Wheaton somewhere between 12-20 and Elmhurst between 20-25 somewhere.  Yes Elmhurst has won 10 in a row, however their big wins are UW Oshkosh and UW Whitewater.  Beating Beloit, Kazoo, and some of the other weaker teams is good, but not something to write home to Mom about.  Big game coming up against Augie Saturday.  HOPEFULLY the Bluejays can get a packed house and we won't be outnumbered with fans on the South risers. :o

I had four CCIW teams on the ballot I turned in today:

#15 Augustana
#16 Carthage
#19 Wheaton
#21 Elmhurst

I had NCC #22 on my 12/19 ballot, but after the 20+ point loss to Lincoln, I dropped them.  I believe NCC will fall out and Elmhurst will jump in.

The 12/19 poll was the only time I've ever had 5 CCIW teams on my ballot.  I had:

#15 Augustana
#18 Carthage
#21 Wheaton
#22 Elmhurst
#23 North Central

Q----

Just wondering-----was the fact that Augie played UWSP the primary factor in your ranking them over Elmhurst? (No, I'm not an Elmhurst fan) I was just curious.
Maybe you can shed some light on something I'm just not seeing. Thanks for the explanation.

As I see it, Augustana's loss (@ UW-Stevens Point) was "better" than Elmhurst's (@ Simpson).  In fact, Augie won at Simpson.  Augustana's win over Wash U is significant for me too.  I have Wash U #14 on my ballot.  Elmhurst has nice wins over UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh, but having seen both Wash U and Whitewater, I think Wash U is better (not sure about Oshkosh).

We'll know more about Augustana vs Elmhurst Saturday night.

Titan Q-- I agree with you that Augie's loss to UWSP is not as glaring as the Elmhurst loss to Simpson.  Granted, it was opening day (and I'm not making excuses here), but Simpson is nowhere near the caliber of UWSP.
The Jays have 2 big noisemakers in beating UW Oshkosh and UW Whitewater.  Good wins over St. Norbert, Alma but those aren't noisemakers.  AND, the wins over Kazoo, Rockford, IIT (why did we even play these guys  ??? ) Beloit, etc.  are just "there".
As a die hard Bluejay fan, I am still "shaky" as to where I see this team going.  At times they have looked great in beating UWW and periodically during the UW Oshkosh game.  Other times, i.e. Beloit they have looked sluggish and wouldn't compete well against the Augies/Wheatons/ Carthages.
I think the team that plays the most consistent, wins most/all of their home games, is able to upset a couple on the road, will come out on top.  A #21 ranking is pretty accurate a judgment that I agree with.

Thanks for the explanation. I agree that Augie's loss to Point was "better" than Elmhurst's loss to Simpson. I just thought, at least prior to playing Point, that Augie's schedule was softer than Elmhurst's. As with----->

IMHO there is NO WAY Augie is the #9 team in the country currently. Dan is correct.

LOOK at the teams they have beaten.
St. Norbert, Beloit, Clarke, Cornell, & Rockford are all very bad to terrible. They have a combined 9 wins!

Simpson & Wartburg are a combined 1 game over .500.

Washington & Coe are the only decent teams they have beaten, and most CCIW fans would tell you those wins should have been expected even though both teams have a very good record to date.

Agreed.

Massey Ratings have the CCIW (.282) as the toughest men's D3 conference.  UAA is a close second (.275), then NESCAC, OAC, USA South and WIAC (all the way down to sixth).  Team rankings (and strength of schedule out of 404),  through 12/31/06:

15 Augustana (70)
26 Elmhurst (172)
27 Carthage (44)
31 Wheaton (38)
77 IWU (85)
83 NPU (157)
90 NCC (143)
180 Millikin (275)

The UAA's top seven are ranked from 9 to 79.  CCIW is ahead of the UAA because Millikin.  Case is ranked 301, well behind Millikin at 180.   So a big hand for the people in Decatur.

I'm always skeptical of Massey (especially when we're not even at the midway point of the season), and the fact that he shows the USA South as one of the top five leagues in D3 is not exactly swaying me otherwise. Sorry, Martin. If it makes you feel any better, I'll second his giving Chicago's league its propers. ;)
