Leave it to Q to explain away the Carthage / IWU free throw discrepancy in a clear, concise, NEUTRAL manner that belies the fact that he is the IWU play by play announcer.

Actually, the color analyst.  Eric Stock, our play-by-play announcer, is kind of like the point-guard and I'm the 2.  He does all of the tough work...I just sort of hang around the arc and fire up 3's.

An article from The Pantagraph on IWU point-guard Andrew Gilmore and the severe tendinitis he's dealing with.  I give him a lot of credit -- he's playing through a lot of pain.  (His problem is believed to be due to the growth spurt that's taken him from 6-1 to almost 6-4 in the last 9 months.)

Well, that being said....you nailed the three on the free throw differential.

I don't shoot it as well as Milos, but if I can go about 30% from 3, I'm doing well.

Q, what's the latest on Sean Dwyer's ETA?  I was talking to someone tonight who had heard that it might still be 2 or more weeks away.  I was hoping maybe to see him in action at Elmhurst this Saturday.

EC moving up 12 spots after beating Augie?!?  Does this show more respect for EC or Augustana?

Just a theory, but I think that Elmhurst's impressive climb reflects some belated recognition for the wins over UWO and UWW as well as the win over Augie. It may also reflect a general sense among the pollsters that the last edition of the Top 25 was in a serious state of flux due to a lot of bad losses, unimpressive wins, and unproven teams among that previous Top 25. That state of flux might've helped a team with solid credentials from a power conference, i.e., Elmhurst.

Greg,

I think you are partially correct, but I have a simpler theory for much of their meteoric climb (it WASN'T just beating Augie!) - unless a team has a LOT of past credentials (moreso than Elmhurst), an opening loss (especially to a Simpson rather than a UWSP) simply takes them off the radar.  I think a whole lot of voters suddenly realized, hmmm, these guys have won 11 in a row, including some GOOD wins.  Voters are human and can only follow so many teams, and you have to be noticed before you can be ranked.

Gregory Sager

Well, we're both trying to read minds on this one, Chuck. From my point of view, I have a hard time imagining that Elmhurst would slip off of anybody's radar. For one thing, November 18 was a long, long time ago. For another, this isn't some sleeper from the D3 boondocks, a la Oxy or WPI or Aurora, that we're talking about -- this is a CCIW team that owns two wins over WIAC teams, one of them ranked in the last poll and the other the preseason #4.

I just see Elmhurst as being too intrinsically high-profile to have been forgotten by the pollsters for that long.

I am sure not too many people were willing to put four teams from one conference on their ballot. Until recently, there was some debate whether Elmhurst was in the top three.

Can you come up with a better explanation for them jumping from (#26) to #14?

It was NOT just beating Augie! :)

I say it was catch-up from being (unfairly) overlooked.  Except for the conference they are in, I think Elmhurst may have been regarded QUITE like Oxy or Aurora.  A more apt comparison might be CMU or Bald-Wally, neither of whom has Elmhurst's record, but both of whom have some VERY impressive wins (and are in elite conferences).

Note to Pat (your post came in while I was typing mine) - quite right.  While the CCIW may (or may not) have a top 5-10 team, I hope your voters can see fit to put a heckuva lot of them in the top 25!  I think there are at least 6 of them in the top 30.

Heck, I gave you two better explanations in post #8229. ;D And Pat's just provided a third one.

A little off topic here, but did anyone else watch the Wisconsin / Ohio State game last night and notice that Dickie V made at least two separate mentions of DIII basketball?  I know for a fact that he mentioned the Cal-Tech losing streak being snapped, but the other mention escapes me at this time.

I was not upset or "discouraged" that Elmhurst wasn't ranked until now mostly because I felt they only had 2 "good" wins- over Oshkosh and Whitewater.
Once they beat Augustana, I started thinking that this is a team that has 3 quality wins now, and deserves to be including somewhere in the 20-25 range.  Honestly, I was a little shocked to see the Jays get placed that high in the rankings.  Now the important thing is to prove that you belong there and not lay any eggs!

Saw Elmhurst play Augustana and was very impressed. That night very good outside shooting, great defense, and the big men solidly outplayed the Augie big men. Lee and Bacon are both very quick guards who can go inside. Things can only get better for Elmhurst with Strzemp ready to play......

Probably that Bo Ryan coached at Division III UW Platteville for 15 years and they'll be nameing their home court after him in a few weeks.

just a guess though..............when Dicky V said "Congrats to Cal Tech" my head whipped around pretty fast to hear what he said.
