I'm impressed by what North Central has done in the last couple of weeks.  After the loss @ IWU, the Cardinals were 3-5 and in serious jeopardy of finishing in the bottom 4.  Since then NCC is 4-1, with road wins over Carthage and Augustana and a home win over Elmhurst.  The only loss was @ North Park.

Look in the mirror, man.

Dan wants us to believe that with a couple of seconds left in a tie game, Wessels and Swetalla were BOTH not moving, and were anchored to the floor waiting for Simmons to charge into both of them. And, that even though there were TWO Augie players involved in the crash with Simmons, neither one fouled him. Right!

Look at the post where I said I am not above saying things I shouldn't at times. I don't claim I'm right all the time.
You admitted you shouldn't have said things about NC that you did-so I guess you're not right all the time either.

Dan insists there was no foul against Simmons. But, the refs were right there. Its the same thing that happened when the teams played the first time. The refs made no call on Krumtinger's shot when they easily could have. Last night they did call a foul---so it all evens out. I don't know what all the Augie fans are bitching about anyway---Augie is still conference champs.
NCC played a great game and deserved to win. Enough said.

Carthage showed a lot of heart this afternoon, winning in Decatur with their best player in street clothes.  Trey Bowens got off to a fast start (and had a huge game) and the Red Men led almost the entire way.

This sets up a great finish, with the IWU @ NCC and Wheaton @ Carthage games set to decide the tournament field.

1. Augustana 11-3
2. Elmhurst 9-4 (@Millikin Wed.)

? Wheaton 8-5 (@ Carthage Wed.)
? North Central  7-6 (vs IWU Tues.)
? Carthage 7-6 (vs Wheaton Wed.)

* If North Central beats IWU Tuesday and finishes 8-6, they are in for sure (they'd have the 8-6 tie-breaker over Carthage via the split with Elmhurst and the 8-6 tie-breaker over Wheaton via the season sweep of the Thunder)

* If North Central loses to IWU and finishes 7-7 and Carthage beats Wheaton, Carthage and Wheaton (at 8-6) get in

* If North Central loses to IWU and finishes 7-7 and Wheaton beats Carthage, NCC and Wheaton are in...Carthage would lose the 7-7 tie-breaker to NCC (since NCC split with Elmhurst and Carthage was swept)

* The winner of Wheaton @ Carthage is in for sure, no matter what NCC does vs IWU...Carthage wins an 8-6 tie-breaker vs Wheaton (via a split with Augie, while Wheaton was swept)

Wheaton fans need to put on their best forest green Tuesday evening, travel to Merner Fieldhouse, and hope Zach Freeman has a really big final collegiate game.  A Titan win puts Wheaton in the tourney.

Final

Carthage 70
Millikin      65

Bowens 27 pts and Hood 23 pts for Carthage
Rexroade led Millikin with 12. Gensler had 8
Carthage wins without Schlemm. Don't know why he didn't play

Or----------------Wheaton could just beat Carthage. Then NCC and Wheaton are both in and Wesleyan can start enjoying the "off season" after their great 3rd place national finish last year.  :)

I'm not going to say that I would mind if IWU wins, at all... but we can also get there on our own. I'll stick with my regular blue and orange wardrobe, thanks. :P ;)

I hope that Zach, Andrew and Daniel and Anthony have awesome final collegiate games... cause no one should have bad memories about their last game ever. (cough) :-X ;) I'm just glad that I'll get to see my guys Johnnie and Michael play their last games ever, as I've already bought my plane ticket to Salem.  ;D 8) :-* ;)

Does anyone know why Schlemm didn't play this PM -----injury, illness, suspension?

Also, what are his prospects for Wed's game?

With him out of today's game, it seemed to give Millikin a little advantage, but Carthage really stepped up and made up for his loss.

Injury...he also missed the game Wednesday vs North Park.  Per WRJN, he will play Wednesday vs Wheaton.

Washington U lost today; good news for Auggie fans!

Late nite

IMO---No way IWU goes to Naperville and wins on Tuesday---Wheaton wins at Carthage on Wednesday---Tourney matchups---EC vs Wheaton, NCC vs Augie

The defender doesn't have to be anchored to the floor for an offensive foul to be called.  If the offensive player is out of control and lowers his shoulder, there is such a thing as a player control foul.

Anyways, not much more you can ask for with one game remaining for most CCIW teams.  Three teams for two spots.  I also see Wheaton and NCC winning this week.  I really think Carthage is going to be on the outside looking in when all is said and done.

Carthage will not lose to Wheaton with Schlemm back on Wednesday.  Take it to the bank and draw interest.

How many CCIW male hoopsters have had his jersey retired?  I'm fairly certain NP bestowed that honor on only Michael Harper.

Michael Harper's #33 is the only number NPU has ever retired in any sport. However, it's actually been worn by a North Park basketball player on one occasion since it was retired in 1981 in a ceremony at the old Chicago Stadium when Harper's Portland Trailblazers were in town to play the Chicago Bulls.

During the Park's 1989-90 season Bosko Djurickovic had a very large roster, and he wanted to call up sophomore guard Dan Dyra from the JV team to shake up some complacent regulars. He was all out of gold jerseys since the varsity roster was already crowded, but there was an extra #33 lying around, so he handed it to Dyra. I doubt that Bosko even remembered that it was verboten for any Viking to wear that number. Dyra didn't realize that the number had been permanently mothballed, either, since the Harper ceremony had taken place seven years before he arrived on campus and NPU has never followed the customary practice of hanging a retired number from the ceiling. The only thing that Dyra knew was that he was finally going to get to play on varsity, so I doubt he even gave his uniform number a second thought.

But the North Park student section was fully aware that Harper's number was retired, so when Dyra got into his first varsity game at the crackerbox wearing #33, the students started chanting, "Sac-ri-lege! Sac-ri-lege!" at the hapless sophomore. Needless to say, he never wore it again, and the number has stayed retired ever since.

Hey, I posted this information on CCIW Chat four days ago. Schlemm twisted his ankle in practice last week and, as Bob said, missed the Wednesday home game against NPU as well as Sunday's contest in Decatur.

Everyone's throwing plaudits at NCC, as well they should -- it's absolutely remarkable the way that the Cards have come up off the mat and won three must-win games in a row against nationally-ranked teams. But how about a little love for the Red Men? They've been on the verge of elimination themselves, but they somehow managed to come back from an 18-point deficit to beat NPU in overtime and then followed it up with a tough road win at Millikin -- and they did it both times without their best player. Brian Schlemm may not be everyone's first choice around whom to build a team, but give credit where credit is due: He's averaging 18.0 and 7.1 for Carthage, and none of his teammates are even remotely close to those scoring and rebounding numbers.

What NCC has done down the stretch is pretty amazing -- but what Carthage has done is pretty amazing, too.
