titan backer hold on I dont think you can compare northwestern to most other d 1 schools because their academic and athletic philosophy is basically like an ivy league school. Their commitment to basketball is no where near the level of the other big ten schools, which allows schools like wheaton to be competitive with them.

Why yes, yes we did...

I never would have guessed you were a "we" person when referring to your school's athletic teams, never in a million years.

with all due respect andone and mr. ypsi this class is very good but no where near as talented as division 1 schools.
For example i think we can all agree  that chicago state and western illinois are two of the bottom 30 division 1 's in the nation with chicago state being bottom 5. Those schools' classes are much better than IWU's in turns of talent and athletic ability but andone you make some good points especially the STUDENT athlete one.

Thank you Millikin. And you may make a valid point also.

I would add two things to aid in the clarification/substantiation of my above post:

1. My comments weren't necessarily confined to IWU. There are other schools with outstanding recruiting classes too.

2. In the comparison of programs between different NCAA Divisions, we need to keep in mind that some low DI and DII schools, by their very nature, may well have recruits that are more athletically gifted. However, that does not automatically mean these athletes are better players than their counterparts at the upper DIII schools. There are a lot of factors besides pure athleticism that go into making a complete player.

For exmaple, see the Wheaton vs. Northwestern score.  Wheaton (a high D3) played great against a mid level D1.

I agree with your statement that D1 players are not automatically better than D3 players---However, I disagree with your example---NU plays in a major D1 conference but they are currently nowhere near a mid level D1 program---Their talent the past few years has been DOWN---NU tries to compete in the Big 10 by recruiting local suburban kids, while Wheaton's recruiting base is much more national with it's religious background---Wheaton may be a D3 school but their national recruiting base is rivaled by only a few major D1 programs

Northwestern was ranked No. 143 of 336 in Division I men's basketball in the Sagarin Ratings.
Northwestern was ranked No. 131 of 336 in Division I men's basketball in the Massey Ratings.

If they're in the top 50% I think that qualifies as being a midlevel program.

Rankings and ratings can be interpreted any way you want---I'm sure the strength of schedule that NU plays (Big 10) was a major factor in their ratings---And they got hammered---There were 4/5 teams in the CCIW last season that could have competed with NU and their talent level---Mid-major by name, certainly not by talent

Late night your right those ranking dont mean much. and great point about wheaton recruiting base.
but really NU would be alot better off in the ivy league because at least there they could compete cause they are never winning the big ten in basketball

Do any Augie, Elmhurst, Carthage, or North Central fans have any info on when the Prairie Lakes summer league in Des Plaines gets started?  It's always had eight games every Tuesday night, but I haven't heard when it gets underway.  Some of you Chicago-area D3 fans should check it out this summer.  The league typically includes Lake Forest, U of Chicago, a Carthage alumni team (McDaniel, Garnes, Powell, Fabian, sometimes Wiertal), Benedictine, St. Francis in Joliet, St. Xavier and others.  It's a good time and often a chance to see some of the incoming freshman.

Not sure if this has been posted here yet, but this article mentions that Lockport point-guard Bruce Durham is heading to North Park...

I posted this article when Lockport's Doug Sexauer committed to IWU.  It also features Durham...

Once again, thanks for providing some NPU recruiting info.  Sounds like Durham will nicely fill a spot NPU needs.  Reading the article, he seems like a leader and "team first" type player.

petemcb,
It started last week, looking foward to seeing NCC and Benedictine play each other also Elmhurst
I'd really like to agree with you,but then we both would be wrong........

petemcb

Thanks muskie and latenite.  Sorry to hear about Augie maybe not being in the league  -  particularly with some of the new players headed there.....although I guess the 2 to 2 1/2 hour for a couple of 20 minute running clock halves is a little extreme.......

As Muskie stated, the Des Plaines at Prairie Lakes summer league began last Tues, 5/29. Augie is NOT in the league this season and neither is Elmhurst, Lake Forest, or U of C. Elmhurst does have an alumni team. One of the members of the team is Asst Coach John Baines, a grad of IWU! Carthage has 3 teams, one of which is also an alumni team. Other teams are North Central, Benedictine, St. Xavier, and Concordia. The remaining teams have names like Warriors, Bulls, JJ's, Demons, and Shoopdogs. Most, if not all, are comprised of a collection of college players from different schools. For instance, last week, the JJ's team featured 2 players from former Class A state champ, Seneca--Griffin Callaghan who plays at DI (I believe) South Dakota State, and Robert Rexroade, a current player at Millikin. In addition to the regular Tuesday games (6:30-9:30) thru 7/31, there are also games on 2 Thursdays--6/14 and 7/12.

Another Chicagoland college summer league, which will begin play on Thurs, 6/14, is the Joy of The Game Summer League. This league, which is widely referred to as the "Deefield League" is held at the Joy Of The Game facility in Deerfield. Last season this league featured teams from North Central, North Park, Lawrence WI U, U of Chicago, Wash (St. Louis) U, as well as other teams that featured a collection of players from several schools. I know Elmhurst was not in this league last summer, but will be this season.

With all the incoming players from the Chicago area plus some returnees, it will be interesting to see if IWU fields a team this year. They are not playing in Des Plaines.

Last season, the Des Plaines league was better. This year, it looks like Deerfield will probably feature the higher level of competition.
