Sager how can my remark be "absolutely ridiculous" when i said 5-7 guys wont be there when you yourself said 3 is a reasonable estimate. I was simply saying that at NPU just like at the majority of d3 colleges and high schools there will always be people who drop off for whatever reason grades, playing time, lack of desire, other interests etc. And your right "crowd
I am really optimistic about the big blue as well. There are a lot of questions to be answered though.

Let's say 21 players show up in the fall.  Which statement is more plausible: "Three players are likely to drop off the team" or "One-third of the team won't be around"?  That's the difference between Sager's estimate (around 3) and the upper bounds of Millikin33's estimate (7).  That's a pretty significant difference.

Student-athletes drop off the team radar screen for various reasons -- they aren't ready to play at this level, they can play a bit but are up against some stiff competition, they can play but will be relegated to JV status (much to their chagrin), they don't buy into the practice regimen or team philosophy, they can't hold up the "student" end of the student-athlete equation, or they realize that academics outweigh the chance (however slim) that they will get some playing time.  I've seen examples of each in my classes.  It's impossible to know how many will make the team, but it's a good bet a team will lose a few.  That said, I'd lean toward a smaller rather than larger number of players who are gone by Christmas break or before.

WOW!

If we are already bitching at each other to the 8th degree over such trivial things, imagine how heated the discussion will get once the season actually gets started!!!!    ;D

For what it matters, I believe the vast majority of players who drop off ANY team you might want to consider, do it after the season ends. They don't come back the next season rather than quit 1/2 way through the current season. Also, most of the players who fail to complete a season do so due to becoming ineligible rather than outright quiting.

The question really is how many players the COACHES will keep.  Depending upon assitant staff, practice, and JV schedules, the trend appears [and I agree] to have one varsity team and keep a team in the 15-18 range.  Good programs stiil only go 8-10 deep in games, so the bottom 5-8 are your future and play play JV games.  So the squad will be only those that will contribute NOW and in the future.  This is college level ball... even at Division III.

With the recent listing of recruits compiled by Dan, I can relate a couple of "recruit chats" overheard last season. I'm not going to mention the kids or schools involved, but they both involve kids on the lists on page 749. These show you things change suddenly and, as they say, "it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings."

1. Coach to a dad----"I hear (your son) is also interested in (X) school."
Dad's reply---" (X) might be interested in (my son), but he's not
                            interested in them at all!"

2. Player to a coach---"If I don't go D 2, I'm coming to your (X) school for sure."

Of course, the player in #1 is now enrolled at the school he was not "at all" interested in.

And, the player in #2 obviously didn't go D 2, but he is at a different school than the one he was going to attend "for sure!"

:o    :o    :o

EDIT--The players and schools involved in #1 and #2 are different.

Titan Q

A friend of mine who is a Millikin grad and resident of Decatur told me that Drew Gensler is back at Millikin.  He heard that Drew decided he wasn't going to like Boise St and came home.  Interestingly, the word is that he is not playing basketball at Millikin.

Maybe someone closer can confirm?

RECRUITING NEWS

With completion of the enrollment process, North Central is announcing that Jeremy Williams has transferred from University of Nebraska, Omaha (D II) to North Central, where he will be a member of the 2007-2008 Cardinal basketball team.

Jeremy played his high school ball at traditional Chicagoland power, Proviso East in Maywood. While at PE, he averaged 10.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg, and was named all conference in the tough West Suburban Conference.

He initially continued his basketball career locally at Triton College in River Grove. While at Triton, Jeremy averaged 13 ppg along with 6 rpg. He helped his team to a 28-7 record and was an honorable mention all conference selection.

Last season at UNO, he started 19 of his team's 27 games, and averaged 20 minutes of playing time a game. In those 20 minutes he averaged 4.7 ppg on 51% shooting from the field and 69% from the line to go along with a 4.1 rpg average.

At 6'5" & 215 lbs, Jeremy will provide the Cardinals with a low post scoring option and, with his combination of speed, strength, and leaping ability, will especially be a force on the boards.

Edited to add height/weight

Titan Q  your sources are correct he is back on campus at Millikin and I dont think he is playing ball ,which really does not make sense. Why come back to Millikin and not play because if he leaves millikin at the end of this year and goes somewhere else he would lose a year so this is quite puzzling. But like i said before he is not a d 1 player but we certainly can use drew at millikin.

While 4.7 ppg and 4.1 rbg should (but may not) improve against CCIW competition, the free throw % is still a liability as all free throws are the same regardless of division.

PS. Either Nebraska-Omaha released their media guide too soon or TitanQ is questioning your sources.

Roop, that's last year's Media Guide, Q was just offering it as a reference I'm assuming, if anyone wanted to read more.
