From Meriam-Webster:

Talent

1. any of several ancient units of weight
2. a characteristic feature, aptitude, or disposition of a person or animal
3. the natural endowments of a person
4. a special often creative or artistic aptitude

By definititions 2 and 3 of talent, it appears that talent is natural, inherent, not acquired.  Thus, individuals on the JV squad can, indeed be talented.

Well Sager I think we have different definitions of what talent is. From my perspective Talent is skills plus athletic ability.  Skills are your shooting, passing and ball handling ability.  For example Larry Bird was not talented, he just was the most skilled player probably ever.

Larry Bird was not talented?!?!?!?!?!

Wow.

Clearly, Millikin33 is not remembering Larry's French Lick-esque beauty of a mustache in the 80's.  Now that was a talent.

Apologies to Titan Q!!!  [on the ball for posting the coaches poll]

I was supried a little how low IWU was and that Carthage was that high.  But the coaches must know something.

Can't wait to get the season underway

[I do not wish to make a habit of agreeing with Q, but wow indeed.  Catching the ball in your right hand, transfering it to your left while floating out of bounds and swishing the shot from 12 feet is pretty much the 5th definition of talent.]

It has been a while since I've posted here.  Hopefully the North Park season will be a good one.

If April is good enough to run the fantasy league, I'd be happy to be part of that this year.  If she's not interested, it'd probably cost more than it's worth to any of you for me to run it again:)

To Wheaton C (still here Dave?), Hiker Jim, Paul C., Vikes22, April (our darling), Ryan, Greg, K-Mark, Q, and everyone else ever involved in the mess...

pipe up if there's interest, but understand that it all comes down to watching every single CCIW game...

Hoops, it is!

Jordan was talented.  so from my definition there is usually not great talent on the court in JV  but there may be a ton of potential. Usually what i see at JV games are players that are really skilled but not athletic or strong enough to play varsity or players who are very athletic or physically inposing but lack skills. Whats your definition of talent.

By definititions 2 and 3 of talent, it appears that talent is natural, inherent, not acquired.  Thus, individuals on the JV squad can, indeed be talented.

Talent = A God-given physical ability (e.g., speed, lateral quickness, leaping ability, hand-eye coordination)
Skill = A particular aspect of the game (e.g., dribbling, shooting, rebounding, passing, boxing out, setting a screen, defending), the mastery of which needs to be acquired through instruction, repetition, and game experience

And what Ron said.

Perhaps there's some alternate universe in which Larry Bird merely had skills rather than talent, but here on planet Earth we recall the Hick from French Lick as a guy who had incredible hand-eye coordination.

I was supried a little how low IWU was and that Carthage was that high.  But the coaches must know something.

As I've often said before, cciwgrad, don't put too much stock in the poll. The coaches have an amazing track record for being wrong ... in part because, as I've also often said before, I think that they're not above a little gamesmanship in terms of ranking a particular rival higher than that team really ought to be ranked. We used to joke about how Dennis Bridges could put the IWU Chess Club in basketball uniforms, and Bosko Djurickovic would still rank the Titans #1 in the preseason poll just to put the squeeze on Bridges.

This came out to be pretty close to how I had envisioned it. I figured NPU would be fourth and Carthage fifth, but I also suspected that the coaches might reverse that order. As it was, the Vikings and Red Men are very close; NPU's fourth with 29 votes, Carthage is fifth with 26 votes.

The one part of the order where I guessed wrong was in the sixth and seventh places. I had them reversed; I figured that the coaches would go with Illinois Wesleyan sixth and North Central seventh. While Illinois Wesleyan doesn't have much in the way of returnees, the Cardinals' losses to graduation and out-transfer were staggering: 76% of their minutes, 82% of their points, and 78% of their rebounds from last season's team are gone. I thought that the coaches would give the nod to the Titans over the Cards simply upon the basis of a strong freshman class in Bloomington that will presumably get the hang of things by February. It appears, though that the coaches believe that the two incoming transfer forwards for NCC (and, possibly, the lingering knee problems of Andrew Gilmore for Wesleyan) earn the Cards the nod. In any case, those two teams are even closer in the voting than are NPU and Carthage: NCC got 18 votes, IWU got 16.

Augie, Elmhurst, and Wheaton as 1-2-3 are no-brainers, as is Millikin for last. I'm curious, though, as to which coach besides Grey Giovanine picked Elmhurst to finish first.

In the post-Peterson era, is this the first time that North Park finished above Carthage in the coaches' poll?

The first time I read this, I wondered "What does Grey have against Augie that GS would KNOW he voted against them?"

Then it all made sense!
