I believe IWU has 6 freshmen that are probable to be in the varsity rotation.  I'll try to list in order of projected playing time:

Travis Rosenkranz, 6-0 (1)*
Sean Johnson, 6-1 (1/2)*
Matt Schick, 6-4 (3)*
Doug Sexauer, 6-7 (4/5)
Edmond O'Callaghan, 6-7 (4/5)
Duncan Lawson, 6-8 (3/4)

* probable starter (Rosenkranz should be ready early/mid December)

A 7th freshman has a chance to get in there:

Josh Sutton, 6-5 (3/4)

In terms a few other situations I am somewhat familiar with...

* I know they like Marco Macias at Elmhurst...he could be seeing time at the 2/3 by mid-December.  They are also high on undersized point-guard Jimmy Saris (listed at 5-9 but could be 5-7), but I sense he's not as close to P.T. as Macias.

* I think Wheaton expects guard Andrew Jahns to get in the mix if healthy (not sure what his timetable is), and I think they like guard Josh Kvam.

* I don't think Augustana expects (needs) much contribution from freshmen...I'm sure that could change as the season progresses.  Mike Avallone is probably the closest to being ready.

I saw Macias play several times last season. While he can shoot, I believe he is best suited to the PG position. Why do I say this? Because of all the guards I saw last season, he probably had 3 of the 5 best games I saw a point guard play. I think EC will ultimately depend on Childs and some other returning player at the 2, and Marco will ultimately emerge ar the point.

As far as freshmen contributing in a major way for North Central this season, I'd have to say that a "major" contribution probably isn't in the cards at this point. There are only 3 freshmen listed on the final varsity roster, and none of them are ready for very meaningful court time at this point. They are progressing, and it is entirely in the realm of possibility they will make a nice contribution later in the season.

Bruce Durham from NP (although there's at least 3 others I think could be as likely to make a big impact).

Bruce Durham is the only NPU freshman who is projected to be a part of the rotation as the season commences, although that can certainly change down the road. Paul Brenegan isn't shy about making promotions from the NPU JV team to the varsity, and even from the JV straight into the rotation (e.g., Julian Boyd last season) if he feels it's warranted.

I had no idea that Fielding Yost coached at Nebraska.  I've always associated him with another traditional football power from further east....what's the name....oh yes...Ohio Wesleyan.

Well, it is off to Albion, MI tomorrow.  Here is my best guess at how things stack up at the Albion tournament...

I have no idea what to expect this weekend but I'm looking forward to seeing the Titans play.

Welcome to another season of CCIW and Division III basketball.  Here is to a safe, exciting, unpredictable, and memorable season.  Good luck to all.

I thought that Pat might've been implying that North Park was the unnamed team in the "unfamiliar position", and it turns out that my inference was correct. The current front-page readers poll that was posted yesterday is: "Which CCIW poll result is more surprising?" The answers are: "North Park at No. 4", "Ill. Wesleyan at No. 7", "Neither are surprising", and "Both are equally surprising".

Now, on the face of it, Pat's allusion to the unfamiliarity of NPU's being picked fourth is certainly correct. It's been a long time since the preseason poll slotted NPU in the upper half of the league, although the Vikings were picked fifth during the first three years of this decade. And it's equally true that seventh is an unfamiliar position for Illinois Wesleyan. But the front-page poll is a little misleading, in that it plays to the ignorance of the people who do not follow this league.

I see I'm a few days behind, but this was the point -- to educate people on where North Park was picked and turn conventional wisdom in its head.

Rejuvenation or Resuscitation ? ::)

Because the art of the tease is to get people to click to read. :) Frankly, I thought that it might be less likely to get people to click through if I threw out North Park, which is fairly anonymous the past 10 years or so outside of your area.
