Two more CCIW victories today. Augie pounded Webster 84-65, while Millikin got a nice win over Rose Hulman 60-56. Washington U bounced back with a convincing 87-76 win over a good UW Platteville team today, which makes Augie's win yesterday a little more impressive.

Why didn't Augustana play UW-Platteville today?  Was this not a tournament?

Sac,
I believe it was a classic.  The Webster Gorlock Classic.
CARDINAL PRIDE STARTS WITH ME!

sac

Thanks, that would explain it of course.

Not all classic's are classics.  The Hall of Fame Classic in Grand Rapids which has always been a tournament but was supposed to be a classic this year, ended up being a tournament.

Make sense? .........yeah me neither.

Late nite

Early season results show the importance of a good point guard (Aurora and Wash U)---Two top-notch players who could have probably made a difference vs good competition--Who's the best returning point guard in the CCIW?  Panner?  Any thoughts?

BIG WIN FOR AUGIE !!!  Augie shot 63% in the first half against No. 1 ranked Washington en route to a 39-22 halftime lead.  The Vikes then hung on for a huge 66-60 win at the Webster Gorlock Classic.  Delp had a poor shooting afternoon but Brett Swetella was huge with 21 points.  Great win Vikings and good luck against Webster tomorrow...Good news Viking fans...all basketball games this year will be broadcasted on the web at Audiosportsonline.net or check the school site for the link.  The broadcast was incredible!

Thanks Viking Mike!

Wash U's Sean Wallis missed yesterday's game against Augie due to a knee injury that may keep him out the rest of the year. Wash U is not a Top 20 team without him, so the Augie win while gratifying is not particularly surprising. In fact Wash U lost a week ago to Calvin College and is now 2-2.

After seeing the Bears' two games this weekend, I'd have to disagree with that assessment. Wallis is a huge loss, however this is still a team with Troy Ruths (who, although he didn't play very well this weekend is still an All-UAA first teamer and an All-American candidate); Tyler Nading, who was a beast in both games (30 points and 7 steals Sunday in their win over Platteville); Danny O'Boyle (great shooter coming back from last year's achilles injury) and Aaron Thompson (another good perimeter shooter who almost single-handedly kept the Bears within shouting distance of Augie in the first half of Saturday's game).

They'll have a lot of adjusting to do to cover for Wallis' loss, but I think it's a little unfair to suggest they're no longer a top 20 team.

As far as the Vikings go, a very successful weekend in St. Louis (actually Webster Groves). Great offensive balance and excellent defensive intensity in both games were the key. Wessels has really done a nice job of stepping in and making his presence felt on both ends and Chandlor Collins and Alex Washington, in particular, have shown tremendous imrovement on the offensive end.

AndOne

Not sure is Wallis' loss means Wash U is no longer a top 20 team, but I did see him play for about 10 weeks this summer in the Deerfield summer league at the Joy Of The Game facility. While he was somewhat smug and arrogant, he was a VERY good player. It would be hard to envision a team being better, or even as good, without him.

In a game where only 5 team members perform at a time, one player can make a world of difference, and removing 1/5th of a starting lineup can open up all sorts of possibilities for the opposition. How often do we see a difference made in a game because one of the stars fouls out? And, in that situation, the affected team could have had the disqualified player's services for the majority of the game as opposed to none of the game. Additionally, as students of the game, we all know the importance of good guard play.

I'll leave the determination of whether or not Wash U is still as good w/o him, or if they're even still a top 20 team, to those who see them play, but its hard to project a team wouldn't suffer a pretty serious drop in its overall effectiveness after losing a player of Wallis' caliber.

Kent Raymond?  Is there another option?

A real pleasure to watch the guys I've read about here from Auggie come down and play in St. Louis.  Collins, Swetella, Delp, and Wessels all played very well, as did Alex Washington off the bench. Coach G's activity from the bench was as advertised, and very entertaining.

I'm hoping the Auggie fan who screamed at the officials at the top of his voice every time down the floor is not a poster here.  While the rest of the Auggie crowd supported the kids and were great fans, and had little to say about the officiating, one idiot wrecked the game for all around him with vociforous condemnation of EVERY call that didn't go Auggie's way (Saturday and Sunday)- Well, my Irish temper got the better of me and I let him have it - it worked, didn't hear a peep in Sunday's 2nd half.  Anyways, if anyone from Auggie witnessed it and thought I was out of line, I apologize.
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

hey Q, AO, GS....and anybody else who wants to help me with this issue.
I have always held that getting fouled in the act of shooting is statisticly viewed as a field goal attempt whether missed or made....am I correct?

It is not considered a FGA if the shot is missed.  That is from the 2007 NCAA Basketball Statisticians  manual.  Check the Shooting Accuracy paragraph.

but just FYI, Kent Raymond plays point...a very different different type of point-guard than Andrew Olson obviously, but he is Wheaton's 1.

Bless you for doing that.  I wish I had the moxie to confront "fans" like this.  Please plan to join me the next time I visit Ohio Northern.  +1 for you!
