It's tough to scoop Titan or Sager on this board. At least Augie got their game in and won. However, they may now be stranded in Cedar Rapids tonight.

Thanks, bluejay - I figured you'd finally weigh in on pronouncing Ruch! ;D

So do you need to straighten out the PA announcer, or is the sound system so bad that Greg heard Ruck instead of Rook? ;)

Faganel Hall has a fantastic sound system. It's practically nightclub quality. The P.A. announcer either needs to enunciate Ruch's name better, or someone has to get up the nerve to tell him that it's "rook" rather than "ruck". ;)

North Park vs Loras games (varsity & jv) have been re-scheduled tentatively for Monday evening.  Check each school's web-page for confirmation.

From the team website:

"CHICAGO, IL (December 1, 2007) – Due to inclement weather, the North Park men's basketball contest at Loras College for tonight at 7:30 p.m. has been postponed to Monday.

The junior varsity contest is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3 and the varsity game will be played at 7:30 p.m."

The problem is that the North Park JV team was supposed to play @ Loras in today's prelim, and then play a stand-alone game @ Concordia in River Forest on Monday evening.  Big roster or not, I don't foresee the JV breaking up into split squads on Monday evening a la MLB spring training. :D

Many thanks to those of you who have kept this room apprised of postponement updates. CCIW Chat is a great way to get the word out when the weather is bad and schedules need to be altered.

Wheaton 60
Calvin 51

6:56 to play

Panner has 25 pts on 7-7 from 3-pt range.

Wiele has 14 rebounds.

Isn't basketball a great game? Last night Wheaton looked pathetic, nobody knew how seriously Wiele was hurt, and a dark cloud was hovering over the entire Wheaton season. Now the Sonic Atmospheric Disturbance is on the threshold of beating a very strong Calvin team in its own gym.

I don't think that there's any sport that packs as many surprises year in and year out as does college basketball.

Ben Panner, 25 pts (7-7 trey)
Kent Raymond, 20 pts, 8 asts
Andy Wiele, 12 pts, 17 rebs (the latter is a new single-game CCIW/MIAA Classic record)

Calvin's outstanding sophomore center, 6'8, 235 John Mantel, was held to nine points. And while Raymond didn't shoot well (6-19 from the field), his opposite number, Calvin's star guard Caleb Veldhouse, scored only 14 and had 14 FG attempts.

As I said in the MIAA room, hats off to Andy Wiele. And hats off to Wheaton on an amazing 18-hour turnaround.

Oh, and thanks to Wheaton for making Bob and I look like geniuses by predicting a 1-3 performance for the CCIW in Grand Rapids this weekend. ;) :D

Hey now Greg, I took the 1-3 scenario too.

I think that a lot of us called for a 1-3 scenario in the CCIW pick'em contest. I'm just saying that Bob and I called for it here in the main room as well.

I didn't tune into the WETN webcast, but I'd be interested in hearing what Bill Harris had to say in his postgame interview.

Nice. ;)

Anything's better than David and Goliath. That one's so played out as a sports metaphor.

How about some love for Gideon?

Nope. Not stranded. Got back into town about 6:00. The game was delayed about 20-30 minutes because the bus had to take a detour due to a jack-knifed semi on I-80. The ususal hour-and-a-half trip took about 2 1/2 hours each way.

Not the prettiest win, but a road win nonetheless. A good defensive effort by Augie. Didn't really see much out of Coe with the exception of their outstanding forward Kyle Kuenstling. Good post moves and an excellent passer.

You are correct.  Even us MIACers are being surprised (some would say shocked) by this UST team.

Here is a photo of Wheaton's Andy Wiele as a freshman, when he was listed at 6-8/215 (and averaged 9.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg)...

And here is a photo from this season as a 6-8/230 beast (and averaging 16.8 ppg and 9.3 rpg)...

The development of a low post player takes much longer than that of a perimeter player, simply due to the importance of physical maturity for a big guy.  As I watch young post players like IWU freshman Doug Sexauer (6-7/210) I can't help but think how much better he'll be when he's about 230 pounds...but that just takes time and hard work.

Or a lot of cheeseburgers. ;)  But the 230 pounds of muscle due to hard work would probably be better for basketball! ;D

It was really a terrific matchup of two of the better point guards in D3. These two fine players went head to head and guarded one another most of the time they were in the game. Actually, Raymond was almost always in the game (39 minutes) while Veldhouse played 32. Caleb wasn't a very good defender when he first arrived at Knollcrest but he has made tremendous improvement in his defensive commitment. Raymond scored 20 but he only shot 6-19 and Veldhouse contested every shot when defending Kent. Veldhouse went 6-14 and was basically outscored at the stripe (Raymond scored 5 FT's while Caleb never got there--which is very unusual). Raymond came away with 4 steals while Veldhouse had 3. Each player grabbed 3 boards. It looked to me like they really enjoyed the competition against one another, chatted amiably more than once, and undoubtedly came away from the game with some added respect for one another.

If you give Wiele a mulligan for the Hope game, in which he was injured and removed from the game for good after only three minutes of play (he scored two points and pulled down two rebounds in that brief interval), he's averaging 19.0 ppg and 10.8 rpg.

I remember thinking before this weekend that the Raymond vs. Veldhouse matchup probably would've been worth the price of Saturday's admission all by itself.
