Augie gave another uninspired performance against one of the weaker MWC teams tonight. Things are not clicking for Augie so far this season despite great expectations. Right now this looks like a down year in general for the CCIW. Only Elmhurst seems to be playing well enough to impress anyone.

The CCIW may be 37-14, but it's not a 37-14 that's studded with big wins. I said several weeks ago that I thought the league might be down this year because of the weakness of the CCIW's senior class. Well, that senior class just got a lot weaker with the loss of Jordan Delp.

Not only the senior class.
Besides Raymond & Burks, name me another CCIW player who you would rather have shooting the 3 (or long 2) when the game was on the line. For my money. if I didn't have Raymond or Burks, Delp is the guy I'd want in that situation.

Quote from: AndOne on December 10, 2007, 03:01:55 AMHave to second GS's analysis of EC to date. I was at the EC-Simpson game, and the Jays had considerable difficulty just getting the ball inbounds and advancing it over the time line.

If you don't want to buy an "outsider's" analysis, consider a conversation I was privy to this weekend wherein Coach Baines of EC indicated that their guards are still having major difficulties including often making careless passes that are intercepted or tipped out of bounds, frequently dribbling the ball off their foot and traveling.

EC's initial and current rankings were due primarily to their having 2 simply outstanding players in Ruch & Burks coupled with the assumptions that their guard play would be decent to begin the season and most likely would be even better by this time.

Exactly. While it can be argued that the MIA casualty that has caused the most buzz this season is Drew Gensler, the reality is that Millikin probably wasn't going to make a whole lot of noise even if Gensler had decided to return to the team. I'd argue that the most important player in this league who is still in school but has declined to play is Pat Bacon. With him, I think Elmhurst's backcourt would be in at least decent shape -- especially since Matt Ryder (who is strictly a spot-up shooter at off guard) is a legitimate three-point threat. Without him, the Elmhurst backcourt is having some serious struggles.

I don't think that you're sticking your neck out---Delp is the one senior who has been a solid and consistent contributor in the program throughout his 4 year career---There is not the same type of combined senior leadership this season that the Vikes had last year---Wessels was the leader on the floor, but all of the seniors played key roles at one time or another during the season to keep the train on the track---IMO, Augie will reach out for leadership from Brett Wessels---He is the logical choice

I hope this won't sound morbid (not intended that way), but does anyone want to tackle the question of which team will be hurt worse: WashU minus Wallis or Augie minus Delp?  [I think both are clearly still top 25, but top 10?)
I'll stick my neck out - Augie.   It's harder to replace a senior point guard (Delp) with a 16.1 avg. ppg.

On the other hand, with Wallis (a junior), Wash U gets their offense from Ruths and Nading.  I think Wash U has more depth and experience to help overcome the loss of Wallis.

I'll be broadcasting the Augie vs Oshkosh this Saturday at Kolf, and was just wondering without Delp, who should Oshkosh look out for, and what kind of make up will this Augustana team be?

G Matt Pelton (6-2/205, So.) - 4.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.1 apg
G Brett Wessels (6-2/195, Jr.) - 11.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg
G Alex Washington (6-2/182, Jr.) - 10.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg
F Chandlor Collins (6-7/200, Jr.) - 8.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg
C Dain Swetalla (6-9/240, Sr.) - 11.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg

Bench:

F Oliver Rorer (6-6/215, Sr.) - 2.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg
G Brian Larson (6-1/185, So.) - 2.4 ppg
C Dan Rukavina (6-9/236, Sr.) - 2.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg
F Jeff Becker (6-7/195, Jr.) - 2.6 ppg

With the injury to leading scorer Jordan Delp (16.1 ppg), Augustana's go-to guy, and best player, is probably junior Brett Wessels.  Wessels transfered to Augustana from Division I U. of Iowa, where he was a walk-on.  His brother was a 1st Team All-CCIW point-guard for the Vikings last year.

6-9/240 Dain Swetalla is one of the more physically gifted and talented big guys in the CCIW, but I'm not sure he quite gets it.  Sometimes he shows up, sometimes he doesn't...when he does, he's a load.

6-7 Chandlor Collins has probably been Augie's steadiest player so far this season.  He is 23-40 from the field (.575), and averaging 8.1 points and 9.3 rebounds.

Alex Washington will probably join the staring lineup to replace Delp.  He is a not a 3-point threat like Delp, but rather a slasher.  Washington is 27-42 (.643) from the field this year.

Matt Pelton is your "pure point-guard" type.  Not much of a scoring threat, but a good ball-handler with a 1.7 A:TO ratio through 7 games.

With Washington in the starting lineup, Augie's perimeter depth is a huge question.  The only reserve guard besides Washington averaging 5 minutes+ per game is Brian Larson.  I assume Coach G will have to get someone else in the guard rotation.

Augustana is typically the CCIW's best defensive team - they're physical and they play great defense on the ball.  That shouldn't change with Delp's injury and their defense should keep them in most games, but I question if they have enough 3-point firepower now.

In their first game without Delp, I think Augustana is in big trouble Saturday @ 7-0 Oshkosh.

The North Park-Knox contest, scheduled for Tuesday night in Chicago, has been postponed till January 5th (2 PM start).  The Tuesday JV game vs. Waubonsee is still on (5.15 PM start)

Actually, Augie will get a chance to figure out some things post-Delp on Wednesday at home vs. Cornell.

I agree that losing Delp is a huge blow to Augie.  I think the guy that is going to have to pick up the slack has to be Dain Swetalla, mainly from a leadership standpoint.  He has been wildly inconsistent his two full years in an Augustana uniform, and it looks as though he is heading down that road again this season.  It's time for him to step up, put the Vikings on his back, and have a terrific senior season.

An article from the Quad City Times on Jordan Delp's injury...

http://www.qctimes.com/articles/2007/12/10/sports/college/doc475cd86112705793147733.txt

"It's a major setback. He's our senior, captain, leading scorer. He's really the heart of our team," Giovanine said. "So, it's a significant blow to our team. But it also will create some opportunities for some other people.

"We don't have anybody as good as Jordan to replace him. It'll be a collective effort. We'll have to sort through that here as we go and see how roles shift and adjust and who can pick up what portion of what he's leaving."

Junior Alex Washington, who has been averaging 10.1 points off the bench, will start Wednesday's game against Cornell. Washington is more of a threat to drive to the basket than Delp was, but he is no where near as dangerous from 3-point range. In fact, he's attempted only one 3 through seven games.

Sophomore guard Brian Larson and junior forward Jeff Becker also figure to see additional minutes.

The description of Delp's injury gave me bad flashbacks...

Shortly after making a jump shot to put the Vikings ahead 56-44 with 4:09 left in regulation Saturday, Delp, a 6-foot, 170-pound guard, suffered what Giovanine called a "freak" injury on a routine play.

"He just planted and cut," Giovanine said. "It was just an absolutely bizarre, remarkably rare occurrence with a college athlete. There was no contact. He simply planted to make a cut and just collapsed."

I was 33 years old when I ruptured mine, so it certainly wasn't the "rare occurrence" that Delp's was, but it was equally as freaky.  I'll never forget that popping sound.

The Carthage website is reporting...

East-West 66
Carthage 63

http://www.carthage.edu/athletics/mens/basketball/

This is almost impossible to believe.

Tomorrow evening Carthage hosts Olivet Nazarene...a team most likely better than anyone in the CCIW.  That will be real interesting.

More details added to the site...

The Carthage men's basketball team (3-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to East-West University (4-6), 66-63, on Monday, Dec. 10 at Kennedy-King College in Chicago.  East-West led by three points at halftime, 34-31, and the Phantoms' E.J. Ollison connected on a three-pointer at the buzzer to give East-West its final victory margin.  Steve Djurickovic topped the Red Men with 22 points.  Milos Vukosavljevic had 19 points, and Trey Bowens chipped in 10 points.  Carthage plays host to Olivet Nazarene University (3-6) on Tuesday, Dec. 11 in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Carthage Physical Education Center.

This is the same East-West team Carthage beat 79-56 on Nov. 28 in Kenosha.

Man, I thought for certain this was going to be a game to turn Carthage around.

Late nite

You'll also probably see some situational minutes for Kyle Waller and Mike Avallone---they're the best pure shooters in the program

QuoteWill you be announcing the score of the stagg bowl during your broadcast??

I like the fact that the CCIW has a nice sense of humor  ;D

The Stagg Bowl will be well over by the opening tip-off. We will make a point of it though, like we always do for our broadcasts.

Now, if you are expecting the PA announcer to call out the score... :D

Thanks to everyone who helped me out. I'm very appreciative, and if you would like, I'll be more than willing to give a scouting report for Oshkosh.

I did some further research on Jordan Delp's situation. As it turns out, he is indeed eligible to receive a hardship waiver (aka "medical redshirt") if he applies for one and his application is accepted by the CCIW (or, on appeal, by the NCAA's Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement). The NCAA changed the participation ratio last year to one-third of the regular season, which in the case of D3 men's basketball (which has a 25-game regular season) is rounded up to nine games. Delp has only participated in seven.

Here's the revised rule in the NCAA manual, pages 91 and 92 (my emphasis is underlined):

14.2.5 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of participation (per Bylaw 14.2.4) by the conference or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 1/12/04 effective 8/1/04, for any athletics participation occurring on or after August 1, 2004)

  (a) The injury or illness occurs before the completion of the first half of the traditional playing season in that sport for the season being waived [measured by the number of completed or scheduled (not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition) contests or dates of competition and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of the traditional playing season]; and (Revised: 1/10/05, for any competition occurring on or after August 1, 2004,
Revised: 1/9/06)

  (b) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not competed in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or one-third (whichever number is greater) of the institution's completed or scheduled (not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition) contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only competition (excluding preseason scrimmages and exhibition contests but including scrimmages and exhibitions after the first regularly scheduled contest) against outside participants during the traditional playing season, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has competed and the number of completed or scheduled contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 1/10/05, for any competition occurring on or after August 1, 2004, 4/7/05, 1/9/06)

14.2.5.1 Administration of Hardship Waiver. The hardship waiver shall be administered by the member conferences of the Association or, in the case of an independent member institution, by the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. An institution may appeal a decision by its conference to the Committee on Student-AthleteReinstatement. (Revised: 1/12/04)

14.2.5.2 Criteria for Administration of Hardship Waiver. The following criteria are to be employed in the administration of the hardship waiver: (Revised: 12/5/06)

[snip]

14.2.5.2.5 Percent Calculation. The following requirements are to be met in determining the percent calculation under this waiver provision: (Note: The percent calculation requirements set forth in Bylaws 14.2.5 and 14.2.5.2.3 apply only to the waiver provisions of this section and do not apply to the maximum and minimum-contests requirements in Bylaw 20.)

14.2.5.2.5.1 Denominator in Percent Computation. The denominator in the institution's percent calculation shall be based on the institution's number of completed or scheduled varsity contests or dates of competition [see Bylaw 14.2.5-(b)] as computed for playing and practice season purposes in Bylaw 17 for the applicable sport. (Note: Exempted events in Bylaw 17 are included in the percent calculation). (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/15/98, 1/10/05, for any competition occurring on or after August 1, 2004)

14.2.5.2.5.2 Fraction in Percent Computation. Any computation of the percent limitation that results in a fractional portion of a contest or date of competition shall be rounded to the next whole number (e.g., 33 percent of a 25-game basketball schedule—8.3 games—shall be considered nine games). (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97)

That's good news for Jordan Delp, if he wants to consider a fifth year of school in order to play out his full four years of eligibility.
