So you don't have to be a full time student to be participating in NCAA athletics?

If you're in your last semester and completing your degree, you can be eligible taking only the classes required to graduate.

see: Matt Leinart, 'ballroom dancing'! ;D

I believe a student does have to be 'full-time' prior to that last semester (true?).  Anyone know the definition of full time at Augie?  If he did have to take more than, say, 6 credits fall term (leaving 3 for winter), he could always take electives and 'forget' to take one required course until winter.  (After 32 years in academe, I learned a few tricks of the trade!) ;)

knarocky22

Full-time status at Augie is 8 credits per term.  However, students can always get more credits than they absolutely need to graduate.  I knew several students at Augie in the accounting program who overloaded a lot and had 150 credit hours in 4 years (required for the CPA exam).  The amount needed for graduation was somewhere in the 123-125 range.  This also happens with students who switch majors.

He could also simply use next year to pick up another minor or major if he is close to one.

Mr. Ypsi

No problem then.  He could save money by taking 8 credits fall, and 'ballroom dancing' winter! :D

The standard is 33%. I wonder why nobody seems to get that fact right.

Because 20% and 25% keep coming back up.  By this time, everytime I think it is 33% I then think "Wait a sec, that's what I thought, but then it got corrected to ..."

It's like this friend of a friend whose name name I continually correct, then backslide! :D  It may take years (if not forever) to get it right.

If Augie hosted due to anticipated fan attendance, Dennis, why did North Park host in 1985 in light of the fact that the playoffs occurred during spring break?  I learned of NP's win around midday while watching tv in Daytona FL.

I believe, and could be wrong, that NP beat defending champion UWW in one of those games.  I also vaguely recall the game was a true nailbiter.  Dennis:  If you attended the game, what did I miss?  :)  How many people did UWW bring and how small was the estimated crowd?

I was at that game as well, and to answer your question about the crowd, take whatever the legal fire limit was for the NP gym, multiply by 2 and that was the crowd.  It was the biggest that I ever saw at the Crackerbox.  Dennis and Greg may have seen bigger but that was the one for me.  I did the PA for the game and I literally had to have my right arm around the shoulders of the guy next to me (Harlan Knosher, NCAA Men's DIII Basketball Chair at the time) because there was not enough room for me to have it at my side.  Sardines would have said that the gym was crowded.

Quote from: nwhoops1903 on March 10, 2008, 02:22:16 AMThanks!!  How do you feel Raymond has improved/changed this season?
He hasn't changed much.
Darn. Does that mean he won't be a D3hoops.com All-American this year either?  ::) (Sorry Pat, I had to :P )

He'd better be. In fact, I've already stuck my neck out and called him a "shoo-in first-teamer" in the NWC room.
Greg, I love that you have always had my back (and vice versa) when it comes to AA selections. We see basketball very differently, but we have basically always come to the same conclusions about key players and it's been fun over the years to have a fellow griping partner. :P

And now to my favorite topic, Wheaton. ;D I love your playoff run this season... Its good for the soul. After not getting in in '04 after a brutal loss at the Shirk, after watching that flashback worthy tip in at the first round game against Calvin in King Arena in '05, and years and years of playoff games that involved teams that weren't as good as you could have been.... this year is ours. We are long overdue. Go get em boys!
Too bad you decided not to come and see the two wins yourself! lol...you can't say, "ours" and "we" because you weren't there, even though you could've easily been there (with a free flight (?) and transportation and room)! Just giving you crap, April.  ;D :D ;) :P
I settled for the all to exciting task of doing my taxes and my normal weekend social activities. Ah, adulthood... You are your significant other are both officially sweethearts forever though. :)

I found a ticket from San Diego to Grand Rapids for 924 dollars, should I buy it?  :D

Mr. Ypsi

April, my guess would be that you could find a cheaper ticket to O'Hare or Midway, and volunteers to drive you the rest of the way. Go for it! :D

The amazing thing about those three games in '85, and the three in '87, was not only that the crackerbox was packed in spite of the fact that NPC was on spring break, but that none of the opposing schools in '85 (Monmouth and UWW, plus North Central, in the regional and Wittenberg in the quarterfinal the next week) brought many fans. NCC did bring some, as did Wittenberg the next week, but neither brought more than 100, and UWW and Monmouth brought next to none. People literally came out of the woodwork for those games -- lots of NPC alumni who hadn't visited the gym much previously, plus a lot of locals who didn't make it a habit to hang out in the crackerbox, either.

In '87 it was a slightly different story, because Illinois Wesleyan was one of the other three teams in the regional. Ripon and DePauw hardly brought anyone, but the IWU contingent was its usual multitudinous size. The gym was packed again the next week against Wartburg, though, and the Knights didn't bring that many fans with them to the crackerbox.

As Dennis alluded, that was one of the really remarkable things about NPC's championship runs in those days; the crackerbox was packed for tourney games in spite of the fact that the students had all left campus for spring break.

I don't think that we're that far apart on basketball. It's architecture that we see very differently. ;)

I do understand the geographical priorities that drive the NCAA selection committee in forming this tourney.  Some minor alterations could be made at a small price to balance the brackets a little better.  The div3 hoops poll could be used as a tool to seed only the top 8 or 16 teams in the country and brackets could protect these seeds from meeting each other early on.
I also understand better than anyone how things were set up for Augie to advance and host the sectional.  This is the part that is so disappointing.  Nonetheless, everyone makes it seem like a foregone conclusion that Augie should have beat Wash U. at home.  This team lost it's captain and top offensive threat 7 games into the season.  They managed to win 11 of 14 games in the conference by only the slimmest of margins and were not flashy.  There were no Vikings named "CCIW player of the week" for the entire year.  They beat Wash U early in the year WITH Delp AND immed. after Wash U lost their point guard.  My point is that this team was very good but not necessarily the favorite in the regional final.
As a huge Viking fan, I had hoped Augie could score enough points to knock off the Bears, but the difference was the poor 3 point shooting.  Augie played very well but their treys just were not falling.  Hitting just 2 of 14 would have won them this game!  This game was played as closely and evenly as any game I've seen.  Wash U. hit the trey in the last minute and the rest is history.
So...disappointed as a fan????   Absolutely!  Down on my Vikes???   Absolutely not!  In a tourney such as this where weaker teams can advance while favorites and higher seeds fall early and where only one team is crowned champion, it's very difficult to guage a successful season.  I think winning 3 consecutive CCIW titles outright in one of the toughest conferences in the country speaks for itself.  Don't worry about the Vikes.  Let's consider this a learning process and move on to next year where 9 of the top 12 return including Frye and hopefully a healthy Jordan Delp!  I think Augie will join the basketball elite very soon indeed!

You raise an interesting question: Has there ever been a season before this one in which the eventual champion didn't win a CCIW POW award? It certainly hadn't happened in this decade prior to this season. What's more, Augustana only garnered one POW award last season, won by Jordan Delp -- and he had to share it with a co-POW, Elmhurst's Nick Michael.

That would be a tough question to answer - I instituted the "Player of the Week' award in the Fall of 1978 when I became league publicity director - but I don't think we ever catalogued the selections from week to week and certainly by season.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

With All Region voting going on, any posts regarding players from your conference would be helpful. Thanks.

Late nite

Read in the Sun Times this morning that Augie is recruiting Eliud Gonzalez, the point guard for Richards---Have seen him play a few times and he is an excellent player---Hope they are fortunate enough to land him---He really knows how to play the position
