2000 - Rhet Wierzba, Farmington (Austin Peay)

Any time I see Austin Peay mentioned, I am reminded of one of the best cheers in basketball.  In 1972, New York playground legend James "Fly" Williams matriculated enrolled hung out at APSU to play hoops for a couple of years.  Fly averaged 28.5 ppg and the Governors made the NCAA tournament both years.

At home, the APSU fans would chant, "The Fly is open, let's go Peay!"
Crescat scientia; vita excolatur.
Even a blind man knows when the sun is shining.

Here is the complete PJ Star 1A/2A All-star team.

Have learned 2nd team All-Star member Lee Piccinelli has just recently committed to North Central of the CCIW, and will be a member of the Cardinals 2008-09 team. A very nice pick up for NCC.

There is a winner in the Lee Piccinelli sweepstakes.
Piccinelli, a senior at Henry, gave a verbal commitment Thursday night that he would join the men's basketball team at North Central College in Naperville next season.
"I'm pretty excited about it," Piccinelli said. "It took me a while to think it over, and I just thought North Central was a better fit for me than Elmhurst (College).

Got a note today from a Dwyer family member that Griffin (brother of IWU's Sean) is going to Augie.  Griffin plays a lot like Sean in that is he great defensively and has that same toughness Sean does, but Griffin is a 2, whereas Sean is a pure 1.  I believe he was Hersey's leading scorer this year.

I'm not sure who else recruited him - I never did ask Sean that this past season.  Based on his toughness, he should be a good fit in Augie's system.

Of course - its Lake Wobegon! ;D

I was starting to wonder if Ron Rose would be the only winning coach NOT to be COY! ;)

[Unless there is total confusion in the reporting, what a way for the IBCA to ruin the impact a what should be an esteemed award.]

Evidently, we have a 3 way tie for the honor of Illinois Basketball Coaches Association DIII CO-Coach of the Year between James Lancaster of Aurora, Bill Harris of Wheaton, and Grey Giovanine of Augustana.

However, its apparent that one of the concerned institutions of higher learning is somewhat confused about the award. A review of each of the involved schools' web sites shows that while (the first ;) ) two schools provide a complete and honest description including mention of the fact the award had CO winner(s), the third release states that institution's coach was the (sole) winner.

Perhaps just a bit of wishful thinking? Possibly, just an oversight.   ::)

Given the personality involved, it makes you wonder if the release was written by the SID or the concerned head coach himself?

Augustana SID Dave Wrath is one of the best in the business, AO. I'm sure that the Augie press release was accurate to the degree that it reflected the information given to the Augustana sports information office.

One other difference between Griffin and Sean is that Griff is about 3 inches taller.  He is the same kind of tough-minded, hard-working, lead-by-his-actions kind of player as Sean.  He led Hersey HS to a better record than was expected of them, and filled a vacuum of leadership that existed in spite of the fact that Hersey also had 6'9" Dayton signee Luke Fabrizius on their team.  Dwyer was clearly the leader on the team.  He is a nice and fitting addition to Augie and should do well in their system.
