Illinois Wesleyan's schedule, complete except for NAIA Northwood U. tournament pairings...

For the sake of off-season discussion, let's ascribe to the IWU brain trust the wisdom of getting the best schedule possible.  ;)

We see that IWU has determined that six non-in-region, non-conference games is in its best interest when Pool C, OWP/OOWP and seedings are considered.

I have assumed that Manchester (in-region) defeats K'zoo (non-in-region) and is the second game foe.

Having only 19 in-region regular games may not dilute a powerful OOWP that the CCIW can earn.

The 5 non-conference (in-region) D3 opponents can be easily justified for what needs to be accomplished.  The UAA foes allow IWU to pick up the OOWP bonanza that we saw demonstrated last year.

Hanover is a good choice from the OWP perspective.

Maryville MO might even have a good OWP this season.

We can accept Illinois College for its place on the schedule and its serving a logical purpose.

Hamilton is non-in-region.

Playing only NAIA's at the holiday tournament makes sense, if one doesn't want to lose, but wants competitive foes to build the team away from home.

Just some off-season thougths.    :)

Ralph, cogent analysis (as usual).

I'd assume that the 'IWU braintrust' is 90+% Dennie Bridges.

Hamilton is a 'disappointment' - the WashU tourney was expected to be four teams, and IWU probably hoped for an in-region opponent.  Hanover has become a real rival (we've tangled often in the post-season).  ONU, IC, Maryville, etc., are both recruiting games (going where we like to 'mine') and a reflection of a low budget.  As for West Palm Beach - if you want sun over the holidays you can't be TOO picky on oppponents! ;)

Unless Coach Bridges (now AD Bridges) has changed, priority 1 (and 2, 3, and 4) is winning the CCIW!  But I'm sure he is also a realist who would play the OWP/OOWP angles in case they only finish 2nd or 3rd. :)

Based on my conversations with Ron Rose about scheduling, I think it is fair to say he was looking to play at least 2 more in-region non-conference games.  It just didn't work out that way for a number of reasons.

Scheduling can be a pretty unscientific process.  Coaches can try their best to play the "in-region game", but in the end it really just comes down to finding games...which can be difficult.

I'm pretty sure A.D. Dennie Bridges is not involved in men's basketball scheduling.

I don't know this for certain, but I'm pretty sure that you're wrong about that, Chuck. Scheduling is generally a head coach's prerogative and responsibility, not an AD's. Every CCIW football and basketball coach of whom I'm aware has done his or her own scheduling, and my impression is that this is a widespread policy throughout all levels of college football and college basketball. Check out the Open Dates section of d3boards.com (which is subtitled, "For coaches to find games to fill their schedule"), and you'll see that the only ADs who post in there are the ones who double as coaches. Sometimes an assistant coach will be the one submitting the post and supplying the contact, which is because in some cases a head coach will farm out the responsibility to his or her subordinate. But it's not the AD's job to schedule games.

Joe, I wouldn't imagine that you do any scheduling for your coaches at Gordon, do you?

On the topic of summer basketball, NPU is forsaking the Broadway Armory league, as the Vikings will confine their summer efforts to the Joy Of The Game league up in Deerfield.

What other CCIW programs are going to be playing in Deerfield this summer? I know that AndOne has indicated that NCC will be participating up there as well, but the JOTG website doesn't have any info about summer leagues.

I'm guessing that Lawrence, Dominican, and Lake Forest will once again be in the league as well.

Greg----

Not that I am the one to talk, but maybe you should have gotten up a couple of minutes earlier.................. :-\

Regarding summer leagues----Yes, as I mentioned North Central will forgo the Des Plaines league and have 2 teams in the Deerfield (JOTG) league this summer. In addition some recent NCC alums have put together a team which they are also entering at JOTG. My understanding is that the alumni team will feature the starters---Walton, Krumtinger, Simmons, Vicario, & Teising---from the 2006 team that won the inaugural CCIW tournament and advanced to the national tourney. It would be fun to see this team play the Carthage alumni team which has dominated the Des Plaines league the last several years. Last year, Carthage had 3 teams, including the alums, in Des Plaines.

As Greg has indicated, the North Parkers will also return to JOTG. As far as CCIW teams go, Elmhurst and Wesleyan also had teams there last summer. Anyone know if they will return?

Besides Lawrence, Dominican, and Lake Forest, Beloit and Wash U also had teams in Deerfield last year. However, the Wash U team was a team from Wash U in name only as just a few of that team's players actually attend/play for WU with the remainder being area kids who play for several other college teams, most of them being DII teams.

Lastly---lets all continue to keep praying/pulling for recent Wesleyan player/graduate Kevin Bryant's recovery.

Q (and Greg), I stand corrected.  At the local high schools, ADs do the scheduling.  I didn't realize college was a different model.

I posted from work. My problem was that I condensed two separate subjects (scheduling and summer leagues) into one post. Being trumped by Bob by less than a minute is the price I paid for trying to keep the board tidy by only posting once. ;)
