Quote from: thundermike11 on October 22, 2008, 03:46:20 PMLast season Wheaton really only played 7 or 8 guys on a consistent basis. That should change this year with the addition of a strong recruiting class, led by Jeremy Pflederer and Tim McCrary.

Betcha it won't. Bill Harris characteristically plays the shortest bench in the CCIW. Only twice in the last decade have more than seven Wheaton players averaged double-digit minutes, and over that same span there was never a season in which more than nine players saw action in at least 20 games, garbage time included -- and it's frequently been only seven or eight players who've gotten into that many games.

Wheaton's roster has been posted on the website:

http://athletics.wheaton.edu/roster.asp?path=mbball

Expect the starting 5 to be the same as last year: Jahns, Panner, Raymond, Carwell, Wiele. Last season Wheaton really only played 7 or 8 guys on a consistent basis. That should change this year with the addition of a strong recruiting class, led by Jeremy Pflederer and Tim McCrary.

Here is the list of kids who verbally committed to Wheaton in the Spring...

Phil Carr (6-5 F, Southgate Anderson, MI) - 13.6 ppg, 11.4 rpg, .438 FG, .624 FT
Drake Diamond (6-8/225 F/C, Centreville, VA) - 4.8 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 38-76 FG (.500), 29-45 FT (.644)
Tim McCrary (6-6 F, New Trier) - 10 ppg, 7 rpg
Jeremy Pflederer (6-0 PG, Tremont) - 25.7 ppg, 8.8 rpg, .544 FG, .813 FT
Steve Pierotti (6-1 PG, Wheaton North) - 5.2 ppg
Spencer Schultze (6-6 C, Grand Rapids Christian, MI) - 13.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg, .530 FT, .650 FT

Did Drake Diamond not enroll at Wheaton?

Coach's Corner
From the desk of Head Coach Paul Brenegan
Expectations of the 2008-09 Season:
-          The Vikings look to build upon last year's 14-11 record with yet again a very young and talented nucleus of players.
-          Return 7 letter-winners including two starters to go along with a very talented and deep recruiting class.
-          The Vikings are very optimistic heading into the 08-09 season.

Key Returnees/Letterwinners:
-          Key Returners/Letterwinners:
o    Forward Nick Williams, Jr. (Skokie, IL. / Niles North HS)
o    Guard Antonio Stevens, Jr. (Chicago, IL. / Mt. Carmel HS)
o    Guard Chris Brown, Jr. (Chicago Heights, IL. / Rich East HS)
o    Guard Clayton Cahill, So. (University City, MO. / Cardinal Ritter HS)
o    Forward Kendall Greer, So. (Matteson, IL. / Marian Catholic HS)
o    Center Phil Schniedermeier, So. (Glenview, IL. / Loyola Academy)
o    Forward Mike Ventura, Sr. (Elmwood Park, IL. / St. Patrick's HS)

Graduation Losses:
-          Losses:
o    Guard - Jason Gordon
o    Forward - Jay Alexander
o    Guard - Ed Whitaker

Strengths/Weaknesses of team:
o    Guards
§  Return PG Chris Brown who saw action in 20 games as a sophomore (dished out 23 assists and had 11 steals)
§  Return guard Antonio Stevens who saw action in all 25 games last season starting 15 games. He averaged 8.9ppg and 4.6rpg)
§  Clayton Cahill will strengthen the Viking backcourt. Cahill saw action in 5 games as a freshman and was the most valuable player on last year's junior varsity squad. He will provide instant offense to the Vikings this season.
§  Also factoring into the mix will be transfers Lewis Wilson and Sean McNamee, and a trio of freshman Roshawn Russell, DJ Cooper and Ryan Beigie. Wilson is a lock-up defender who brings a lot of athleticism to the table. McNamee is a solid outside shooter who transferred in from Lake Forest College. Both Russell and Cooper are jet quick guards who can both handle and shoot the ball with great accuracy. Beigie is a tough hard nosed defender who plays extremely hard.
o    Forwards:
§  Leading the way will be junior second team all-conference player Nick Williams and sophomore Kendall Greer. Both will provide athleticism, size, and length at the forward position this season. He averaged 15.3ppg and 5.6rpg last season playing in all 25 games with 16 starts. Greer saw action in 10 games as a defensive role player and can play multiple positions on the floor. He has worked extremely hard this off-season and is poised to have a solid year.
§  Newcomers competing for playing time will be freshman Joel Benson, Clint Mixon, and Issa Avery. Benson and Mixon are both strong, athletic players who can both rebound and score. Avery brings athleticism and versatility to the Vikings.
o    Up-front:
§  The Vikings will rely on a trio of players including senior four-year letter-winner Mike Ventura, sophomore Phil Schniedermeier, and transfer Stephano Jones. Ventura played 22 games last season starting 11. He will provide experience and strong interior defense to the club. 6-7 240lb. sophomore Phil Schniedermeier and 6-4 250lb. junior Stephano Jones are strong low post players who should help the Vikings rebound and score inside. 6-7 240lb. freshman post Emanuel Crosby will battle for playing time up front as well.

2007-08 Record/Conference Record, Finish:
                - 2007-2008 Overall Record: 14-11
                - 2007-2008 CCIW Record: 6-8 (6th place finish)

Expectations of Conference finish: Our goal every year is to compete for the conference title and we feel we have the pieces in our program to do just that. It will come down to how well we can rebound the basketball being undersized and how well we shoot the basketball.

We are very excited for this season. We have a great schedule in front of us that we feel will prepare us for CCIW play. Our guys have worked extremely hard up to this point and have really come together in the process. We have the pieces in place to do some great things this season and we will work hard each day to accomplish them.

Drake Diamond is at Wheaton (in fact he watched a movie in my room last week  ;D). However, he decided early this week not to play basketball.

OurHouse

STILL NOT GOING TO GET IT DONE WITHOUT....    ;)

These 5 following skills are the skills that almost all coaches look for in a point guard to lead the floor and command the team on the court. A team does not win the BIG games without them.

1. Leadership & Confidence
As the point guard of your team, you MUST have leadership.
As a leader, you never reveal fear, for he goes down with the ship. Show to your teammates that you guys are a great team, and run the floor and handle the rock with confidence, and your teammates will automatically respect your decisions and trust you more with the ball.

2. Strong Defense
Talk on defense. Great point guards talk constantly on defense helping their teammates to recognize potentially dangerous points of attack by their opponent. They keep their focus throughout the course of a game, and pay attention to details at nearly all times.

3. Court Vision
Court vision is the most important skill that a point guard must possess. The role of the point guard is to be the floor general. He must command the team like a captain commands a ship. Court vision is the ability to locate all your players at all times, and to always know where they are standing, and where they will run to.

4. Speed
What do the top NBA point guards Steve Nash, Tony Parker and TJ Ford have in common?
They're incredibly quick and nimble on their feet.  Speed forces multiple defenders towards you so you can dish the ball out to an open teammate. Speed allows you to break down the defense to create holes and open up passing lanes.
Speed is what starts off the offense, to get the offense moving on its feet so more chances arise and better shots are taken.

5. Ball Handling
Great ball handling skills are super super important for a point guard because he can focus more on controlling the flow of the game and less on whether he can perform a proper crossover.
The better you handle the ball, the easier it is to keep your head up and spot your teammates for that critical pass. Work on your ball handling every day, because there is not one point guard I've talked to that does not stress ball handling as a critical skill.

GS - goes to almost all the home games, I don't, so I missed it too.

Have been at NP when Swedish Royalty have been on campus over the last 40 years.  Kind of different to see secret service agents on top of campus buildings and across the street on Foster Avenue.

When Prince Bertil from Sweden visited the campus in the late sixties he came unescorted.  But when the King and Queen came in the mid-eighties there were secret service agents everywhere.

I think my favorite 'bodyguard' story was when then U.S. States Attorney James Thompson (later governor) (a North Park Academy alum) came to campus to give the commencement address in the early seventies.  His bodyguard looked like the guy they used to model "Columbo" after - about 5-2 with a wrinkled overcoat, which he never took off - even though the gym was 90 degrees.

As the saying goes, "Regardless of how hot a woman is, there is always some guy that is sick of putting up with her." That being said, I doubt that I would be working hard to get back on the course if I had something like that asking me to stay home with her.
Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.

I'm a bit surprised to see Wheaton so high, I thought they would be more around 8-9. I also thought Elmhurst might be a bit higher. Good to see IWU get early recognition.

Tough conference, again.  And we've got NPU and Carthage feeling improved over last year.  Sounds like another tough year to be wearing Millikin blue.

Not too surprised at Elmhurst with unknowns there in the guard spot.  If Elmhurst comes out strong and fixes reocurring problems from last year, I would expect them to move up quickly.  To be honest, I had no expectations for IWU to be in initial Top 25.
