Just got back from the Wheaton/Benedictine scrimmage. Benedictine won the first half 34-31, a half in which the Thunder looked fairly rusty. Wheaton cleaned a lot of things up and won the second half 38-28 (I think).

Kent Raymond was his usual self, scored nine straight at one point. Other than that, a fairly balanced effort from Wheaton. Ben Panner played well, especially on offense in the second half. I felt that the Thunder's interior D was average for most of the scrimmage. Neither Jake Carwell nor Tim McCrary were in uniform for Wheaton.

In the JV period, Wheaton won handily 41-26. Spencer Schultze was quite impressive, scoring in double figures and playing very well down low. Phil Carr also looked very good.

Wheaton's next scrimmage will be next Thursday (13th) at Cornell College.

Nice story in the Sun Times yesterday -
Division I is not the be-all, end-all

Augie and IWU get a mention -
QuoteAnd often it's simply more fun playing at a lower level. Go check out an Augustana-Illinois Wesleyan Division III matchup on a Saturday night to see and feel the atmosphere of a "lower-level" college basketball game. Then go catch the New Jersey Institute of Technology matchup with Utah Valley on Feb. 3 (yes, both are Division I basketball schools).

Great article Martin... I think WE all know this to be true, and it's great to see it in the Chicagoland media.  I guess my only question is this...  Do that many people actually still READ the Sun Times?!

Good to see Jordan Delp is back on the court for the Vikings. Augie's only apparent weakness is the absence of anyone to play the post position. Chandlor Collins is a fabulous rebounder but is only 6'7" and who helps him clear the glass.

Carthage loses an exhibition game today at NIU.  Final score was 76 - 62.

Looks like a poor shooting day (20 - 61) was part of the reason....NIU did play their starters heavy minutes so it appears it wasn't quite as bad as the score looks.  Starters for Carthage were Tolo, Stuart, Steve, Fendley and Ideran.   I would say Ideran was a definite surprise although he didn't get big minutes.

Nice plug for IWU and Augie.  Not so nice if you're the rest of the CCIW!  I believe the writer of the article (Joe Henricksen) is an IWU alum. ;)   Correct me if I'm wrong TQ! :)

Clearing the glass wasn't too much of a problem last night. Augie had a fairly decent edge in rebounding, but without the size of Swetalla and Rukavina defending big physical post players will be more of a challenge this year. They've got plenty of height with Collins, Bertrand, Nelson, Voiles and Green, but not a lot of beef. Jordan looked like he was moving fine. His jumper was off, but he started to heat up down the stretch.

I was at the Carthage/NIU game.  Haven't seen the Redmen in a couple of years but since they were in my backyard and my son goes to NIU I had a good excuse to see them.  A couple of thoughts and questions.  Why was Tolo shooting so much?  Seemed liked he'd be of more use closer to the basket.  Steve is the real deal, took over in the second half but was plagued by foul trouble.  Did he have D1 offers or was it just a given that he would go to Carthage?  Carthage had some chances to pull closer than four in the second half but couldn't get over the hump.  NIU had more overall quickness but a good showing by Carthage against a D1 team.

Nice plug for IWU and Augie.  Not so nice if you're the rest of the CCIW!  I believe the writer of the article (Joe Henrickson) is an IWU alum. ;)   Correct me if I'm wrong TQ! :)

Henrickson attended IWU his freshman year...he transfered to Illinois State, which is where he finished.

In that little "go check out an Augustana-Illinois Wesleyan Division III matchup on a Saturday night" statement, he did use the two CCIW schools that have accounted for the last 6 league championships.  And the teams that played for the CCIW conference tournament title last March.  And the teams that finished #1 and #2 in the '07-08 reguar season.

I really don't think he was trying to slight any CCIW teams or favoring IWU because he spent one year on campus.

bataviapete,

Even though Tolo is one of the taller players on the team, his style lends itself to be more of a perimeter player on the offense.  I don't think Bosko has any allusions of trying to pound the ball inside to him but rather force teams to have to guard him on the perimeter with a big guy.

As far as Steve, I'm sure he probaby had some interest at a other levels but it always seemed like a foregone conclusion he was going to play for his dad so not sure how much some schools even went after him.

TQ,
I never said Mr. Henricksen was slighting any of the other six CCIW schools.  I merely said that it was a good plug for the two schools mentioned.  From a basketball recruiting standpoint, the plug was not so good for the rest of the CCIW.  Now, I'm not saying Mr. Henricksen shouldn't have used the two aforementiond schools.  I was just making a point.  However, for you to say that he was not favoring IWU can be debated.  While, Henricksen is not an alum of IWU, there is a connection because he spent a year on campus.  That alone lends credence to the possibility that he may have, just may have, a little favortism for the green weenies! :)  Afterall, that's the choice he made after high school.  ;)

UW-Platteville, whom Augie scrimmaged Friday, went down to Peoria and knocked off Bradley 84-79 today. The story is on D3hoops' front page.
