Looking forward to another great season.  I love that IWU has the top three pre-season teams in the nation on the schedule.

In honor of the new season, I named d3hoops.com the "Site of the Week" on my blog: http://fatpastor.wordpress.com

I know that every once in awhile the discussions on this board start to lean toward some theological debate, and the churches represented by the schools in the CCIW offer some interesting fodder for such discussions.

I've often wondered about that Karma thing too (on this site, not so much in the universe).

+K for you, too - now you're out of the hole (or is that whole)?

covie, working for lutherans, who attends a far-right evangelical summer conference (theologically neutral, I guess - or just a mess).
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

thundermike,

That is dennis's 'official conspiracy' explanation.  (He and Greg have been feuding for years - how much is schtick and how much is genuine antipathy is something known only to them. ::))

The actual story on karma is much less exciting.  After you reach 200 posts, 'applaud' and 'smite' options appear under a poster's karma score (except your own, for obvious reasons!).  Thus, your karma is a (very) rough approximation of the approval or disapproval the many hundreds of veteran posters have for your posts - subject, alas, to school rivalries, personal vendettas, etc.

Keep in mind its very easy to lose K points. All you have to do sometimes is say so and so isn't the world's best player or best coach, and smite-o. For instance, look at my posts from the top of page 1079 down. Because of what I said somewhere on that page since about 1 AM today, someone dinged me. So be aware, it doesn't take much.
You can be right as rain and still get dinged.

At the risk of endangering my karma due to ignorance, I am curious as to how the whole karma thing actually works.  ??? I have stayed in frustrated silence until now, but I can't take it anymore.  >:( Would someone please be kind enough to explain it to me?

I other news, the College of Staten Island lost their first game 90-48 last night :o I'm not really sure what to expect Friday night.

I just took a peek at U Chicago's schedule, and with three of their next four games against Augie, Loras, and Wheaton, is it possible for the Maroons to start 1-5???

Facing tough competition like Augie and Wheaton could easily result in 2 more losses. I don't know enough about Loras to comment. So far, it doesn't seem like the Maroons have played like the pre-season #22 ranked team in the country.
Keep in mind also that they were beaten in both halves of a pre-season scrimmage ny North Central who was tabbed to finish 6th in the CCIW in the annual coaches preseason poll.

Dennis-- What are your thoughts on the JFK assassination?  ;D

Mr Ypsi-- Thank you for giving me more of an objective look at the whole karma issue. Although, Dennis' theory could still be true.

AndOne-- I will do my best to tread lightly then and not upset the powers that be.

I would partially disagree with this.  As long as you remain civil and respectful, very few posters will ding you for a disagreement in content.  As AndOne WAS civil and respectful, I suspect he was victimized by a troll rather than for that post, and I'll restore the +k as soon as I've posted this.  (One of the failures of the karma system is that you never know from where or for what the karma was given or taken away; with my volume and diversity of posts, my total often goes up or down half a dozen times aday.)

Bottom line - don't let karma rule your posting.  Don't self-censor yourself - UNLESS it really is something that would be better left unsaid! ;)

I don't plan on heavy self-censorship. I just figured that since I plan on becoming a little more active on the board this season, I should learn how the game is played.

Though I have never cared much for Coach G's in-game antics, I gained a whole new respect for the man this summer.  I watched him and one of his assistant coaches stand in line for at least 3 hours in order to wait their turn to pay their respects to the family of Kevin Bryant, the fine young man/basketball player from IWU that died tragically in a whitewater rafting accident.  As far as I know he was the only CCIW coach to attend the viewing other than Ron Rose.

Might be a bit of a wild man on the court but in my humble estimation he's a pretty class act off it.

well I gave you a +K (which is probably the kiss of death), because one of "chosen" zapped you.

bucking for the Hall of Fame ranking are we?

spoken like one who has made "piece" with the Hall of Famers (you can get off your knees).  Your karma shows you are among the candidates for sainthood.

being one of the "chosen" is tough with those green-tinted glasses
better try GS' blue and gold ones to get a more acceptable view.

quoting myself - an old Mitch Rukavina trick -

yoohoo - after 43 years I'm finally "All-Region" with a thousand posts.

Guess I'll have to go back and eliminate a few of them - i like the sound of All-Conference better - and I don't have to worry about listening for the alarm in the bat cave, just worry about setting the alarm off.

#2 Augustana 58
U. of Chicago 57

http://athletics.uchicago.edu/livestats/xlive.htm

Down 1, Jordan Delp hit a shot to win the game with :02 on the clock.

Augie again played without preseason All-American Brett Wessels (what is that injury by the way?), but based on Chicago's opening weekend results (losses to Edgewood and IIT) this one being so close surprised me a bit.  On the other hand, Chicago has good players and is usually very tough to beat.

Augie got out-rebounded 33-22.

I think the lack of a true center on this Augie team has been a real concern for Augie fans coming into the season. Hopefully Wessels will be back soon, but Dansand said he is not likely to play against Wash U. this weekend, a game in which he will be really needed. It sounds like some kind of knee injury has sidelined him. In the mean thank goodness Jordan Delp is back. His last minute/second  shots are the only reason Augie is now 2-0.
