thundermike,

That is dennis's 'official conspiracy' explanation.  (He and Greg have been feuding for years - how much is schtick and how much is genuine antipathy is something known only to them. ::))

The actual story on karma is much less exciting.  After you reach 200 posts, 'applaud' and 'smite' options appear under a poster's karma score (except your own, for obvious reasons!).  Thus, your karma is a (very) rough approximation of the approval or disapproval the many hundreds of veteran posters have for your posts - subject, alas, to school rivalries, personal vendettas, etc.

bucking for the Hall of Fame ranking are we?

spoken like one who has made "piece" with the Hall of Famers (you can get off your knees).  Your karma shows you are among the candidates for sainthood.

being one of the "chosen" is tough with those green-tinted glasses
better try GS' blue and gold ones to get a more acceptable view.

dgp

Wrong on all counts, oh curmudgeonly one.

My karma is dog-vomit compared to MOST posters on MIAC, LL, and some other boards where they pass it around to one another like Hamms (MIAC) or who knows what on LL. ;)

Greg doesn't 'do' karma, Q is often embarassed that I am a Titan supporter, and Pat held me in utter contempt up to a year or so ago (and I will never be HoF since I only rarely personally attend d3 games).

But don't let reality stand in the way of a good conspiracy theory! :D

BTW, if you're looking to delete posts to get back to all-conference (your next post after the one I quoted), you might want to begin with the one I DID quote - somewhat less than civil or respectful. ;)  I'm not a candidate for sainthood, nor do I kiss anyone's a$$ (or were you seeking to imply something I would find even more distasteful?).

Karma is the way the residents of the bat cave (aka Hall of Famers) keep the non-Hall of Famers in their place.  If you are a non-Hall of Famer and you pick a fight with a Hall of Famer a light goes off in the bat cave and the herd descends upon your karma en masse.

Now you might, for instance, call these non-conference games "pre-season" and you will incur their wrath.

If one of them tells you its December, when the calendar says its November, don't argue.  You lose.  It's like the card game "Government" - whatever card they show against your's - wins.

It doesn't matter if you are right are wrong, just how they play the game.

Dude - if I was worried about my Karma I wouldn't post here.

But please don't ostrich on us, Pat - we've seen too often on this board, alone, the Hall of Fame gang - riding to the rescue of their brethren.

How many other boards have been infected by their brutish tactics?  I don't have the time or inclination to check it out - but from the emails I have received from non-CCIW former posters (and consequently those who just got frustrated and left and never came back and never told anyone) I'd think it might be more than a chance few.

How many dozens of posters have been driven away from looking at the advertisements on your site - by their bullying.

Opinions are great - whoever has them - but people don't need to be overwhelmed with blogging castration just because they don't agree with the current Hall of Fame clique.

K+ for you

you should know that there is an alarm that goes off in the Hall of Fame "Bat Cave" whenever one of their members is getting flambed.

They are the brotherhood - and you have messed with the primal forces of D3Hoops.com.

Having said all that (and I won't read the article by Burwell) - I can tell all of you that as a former SID at a small school in a major metropolitan area - almost any coverage at any time was welcome.

At North Park, we not only fought the pro teams, horse racing, Big Ten, DePaul, Loyola and Notre Dame, but in the Chicago area high school sports is huge and way up the scale in priority over the small colleges.

Take a look at my karma score - courtesy of disagreeing with the vaunted guardians of all that is "right" with D3 hoops - verily they will come out of the woodwork and posters you will never know or talk to will smite you down.

Do not try to disagree with the vaunted few - its a high school clique of the worst kind - DoS

King Dennis, it's clear you're very concerned about this karma thing.  I hate to disappoint you, but this member of the Goon Squad does not use the karma feature.  I don't "spite" and I don't "appluad"...I just do not think to do either.

Whether your karma problems stem from targeted attacks by a secret brotherhood of Division III basketball internet posters set out to destroy you, or are due to the gloomy, negative, and sarcastic content of your posts is not something I am qualified to answer.

I will say that I'm troubled by your frequent references to the "bat cave" though.

Though I have never cared much for Coach G's in-game antics, I gained a whole new respect for the man this summer.  I watched him and one of his assistant coaches stand in line for at least 3 hours in order to wait their turn to pay their respects to the family of Kevin Bryant, the fine young man/basketball player from IWU that died tragically in a whitewater rafting accident.  As far as I know he was the only CCIW coach to attend the viewing other than Ron Rose.

Might be a bit of a wild man on the court but in my humble estimation he's a pretty class act off it.

G KNOWS HOW TO WIN, regardless!

I have to say that the allegations made against Coach G. are just another example of the wussification of America. I can't count the amount of times I was grabbed by a coach(either by the shoulders, the head, or even a yank of a facemask in football) or screamed at and I turned out just fine and didn't feel assaulted in any way. Some people need to grow a pair.

Rob---

I like that word u used "wussification." I'm sure we'll see it in Webster's soon!

I usually see it spelled with a 'p' rather than a 'w'. Fortunately, Rob Berki is a fine Nebraska gentleman whose parents raised him properly. ;)

I didn't know this. Thanks for sharing it. Yes, I agree that it speaks well of Grey Giovanine that he did this.

I checked it out, Robb, and I'm sure that I'll check it out again. You've learned the first rule of blogging: Give your blog an interesting name that people will remember. ;)

Viking Mike

WOW---another barn burner for Augie!  This is my take on the game listening to the webcast at home.

Don't get me wrong. A win against a fine U of Chicago team on the road is great, but...I have some concerns.  Augie played good defense, shot 54%, and had only 11 turnovers.  It seems like they should have won by 7-10.  However, it  came down to a Jordan Delp jumper with 00:02 left to win it for the Vikes.

Augie was up 10 points halfway through the 2nd half when they missed on 3 opportunities to clear a defensive rebound.
The Maroons at that moment seemed to wake up from there early season funk.  They went on a run to tie the game and eventually went up by 2.   The Vikings responded with some stops and got the ball to Delp for his 2nd game winning shot in as many games.   Augie was outrebounded 33-22 and this is why the game was close.

We will have to hit the boards a lot harder Sat night against Wash U. and throughout the season if we hope to be in contention for a title of any kind.  Hopefully Coach will have the guys active around the boards when #1 Wash U. comes to Rock Island Saturday.

Anyone have an opinion on how big this game b/w Augustana and Wash U. is????
Is it for sure that Wessels is not going to play?  How does Augie take down a team with 2 All-Americans while their own All-American is on the bench???   I'm hoping the Vikings can do it, but realize it will be difficult w/o Wessels. The newly renovated Carver Center will likely be loud and packed come Saturday night.  Go Augustana!!!

Dennis-- What are your thoughts on the JFK assassination?  ;D

Mr Ypsi-- Thank you for giving me more of an objective look at the whole karma issue. Although, Dennis' theory could still be true.

It could be ... but it isn't. Trust me, it's pure unadulterated paranoia on Dennis's part.

As Q has stated, he doesn't applaud or smite, and he doesn't send "let's gang up on this guy!" e-mails to other Hall of Famers whenever someone disagrees with him, either. Nor do I applaud, smite, or pick up the bright red phone in Commissioner Gordon's office whenever I'm challenged to a debate. Q and I just don't put that much stock in the whole karma thing (although I can't help but notice that mine goes down whenever Dennis is logged onto this site -- must be some sort of odd coincidence :D). Nor do we need any help fighting our battles. And the third Hall of Famer we've heard from tonight, sac, doesn't make a habit of coming in here and changing people's karma, either.

There are four other HoFers who read this page. Two of them are Warren Thompson and David Collinge, and they are as abstemious in their attitudes towards dealing out karma alterations as are Q and I. Another is site proprietor Pat Coleman, and he is far too busy to do any lingering here; he pops in from time to time as he's making his rounds across the site, but it's safe to say that nobody is flashing any alarms in Pat's "bat cave". The fourth, Ralph Turner, is a nicer gentleman than the rest of us HoFers put together, and he'd no more smite Dennis than utter a disparaging word about the great state of Texas. ;) I'm pretty sure that the other HoFers (Frank Ubile, Rhodes Scholar, etc.) don't read this page.

The advice that you're getting from Mr. Ypsi is pretty sound, thundermike. State your opinions clearly and fairly, support them with factual evidence whenever possible (statistical links are your friend!), and don't take any cheap shots at anyone, and people will generally not smite you. Occasionally someone will smite you as a matter of school rivalry, but that's more true in rooms where the rivalries run white-hot. The people in this room who have the greatest antipathy towards Wheaton College are the NPU folks like myself, and we consider it our Christian duty not to hold your orange-tinted affliction against you personally.  ;)

I haven't doublechecked to see if the Live Stats in the link that Bob posted earlier for Augustana @ Chicago are accurate, but here's the box score, just in case:

http://athletics.uchicago.edu/mensbasketball/uc-augym.htm

What a fun game to watch. Some people don't like defensive-oriented basketball games. I do. Defense is all about imposing your will upon the other team, and tonight was a classic example of two teams attempting to impose their will upon their opponent. The big surprise was that one of those two teams was Chicago, a team that couldn't guard a row of newspaper boxes as recently as this past weekend. The Maroons certainly made up for it tonight; while Augie did manage to shoot .545 from the field for the game (mostly because nearly every Augie made shot was a layup), it came on only 44 shots. You usually can't win a game while taking only 44 shots from the field (and 14 from the line), so don't be deceived by Augie's shooting percentage. Chicago made the Doggies work for it tonight. The Maroons may be 0-3 right now, and they'll probably go into UAA play with a record somewhere in the vicinity of 6-5 or 5-6, but mark my words -- that will be a good team in January and February.

And as far as making the other team work for it was concerned, boy, was that true the other way as well. The Maroons had to struggle and scrape for every point they got. Augie had that pit-bull mentality going late in the game, when the defense was extended and the Chicago players holding the ball on the perimeter had that "I don't want any part of this" look in their eyes. Having said that, Chicago didn't do itself any favors when it did get open looks. Chicago's utter shooting futility from downtown from Saturday and Sunday continued through the first half of tonight's game. The one thing that worked was Matt Corning in the low post; Corning, who is a 6'4, 220 linebacker disguised as a small forward, has been Chicago's only consistent weapon thus far this season, and he really took it to Chandlor Collins. When he wasn't powering through Collins to get to the rim in the second half he was throwing passes to weak-side shooters behind the arc -- and they finally started knocking them down after 4 1/2 halves of futility, as the Maroons fought their way back into it.

I'm a bit surprised that it took Grey Giovanine so long to switch the stockier Justin Bertrand onto Corning, and after the game dansand commented to me that he expected more double teams down low on Corning. Either way, I think that augiefan is right about Augie being vulnerable defensively in the low post ... although not every team has a player like Matt Corning on its roster.

I sat with the Wheaton coaches in the second half, and when the game ticked down into its final minute Nate Frank said, "Augie will win. They always win the close ones. That's what they're all about." Sure enough, the predicted outcome came true -- with the most predictable shooter on the floor, Jordan Delp, making the game-winning shot.

Augie always gets in your grill when the game goes into crunch time; Augie always leads the league in floor burns; and Augie always finds a way to get off the last shot in a close game. That's all a big part of the reason why Augie has the best program in the league right now.

Dennis_Prikkel

a very interesting win for Augie

and a very interesting loss for Chicago

two questions

1- was Chicago "that bad" last weekend?
2- was Chicago "That good" last night?

me thinks that this is an important win for Augie's resume and for the CCIW's as a whole.

Titan Q - a belated happy birthday from a non-denizen of the "bat cave".

Shirley, you have never been to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and watch the bats fly out en masse at twilight.  It's as if a bell goes off and millions of them fly off at once.  The NPS has actually built an ampitheatre near the cave entrance so folks can sit down and watch the spectacle.

dgp, been there, done that - many years ago.

GS - ah, to be so versed in all the names and all the excuses.  Its funny how the HoF's all seem to know when they're being mentioned and sojourn our way.

Looking forward to finally seeing NPU at home on Nov. 29.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

AndOne- I don't know.  I find it really strange that EC would schedule back-to-back games like that.
As for the players starting or quitting,  I know a lot of information and much of it cannot be disclosed.  To paraphase, there has been a lot of kids quitting or leaving the team.  Some old reasons, some new reasons, but whatever the case is,  there has been a lot of "interior movement within"

BRLHSFAN- I will be calling most of the Bluejays games.  We did mention during the Aurora game that I/color guy would not be able to make the Simpson game (that thing called work got in the way  :-\  )   and directed people to log onto Simpson's website for directions  on how to listen to the game.

This latest Karma talk came because another reader (not moi) challenged someone docking his karma.

seems strange that anytime GS talks about karma that its like ants drawn to honey.

Now you denizens can all go back to whatever rooms you linger in and leave the CCIW folks to talk about their league.
