Some stats going into the Wheaton/Chicago game tomorrow night:

Chicago is shooting 38% from the field, 25% from downtown, and 67% from the foul line, while averaging 66.8 points per contest. Their opponents are shooting 47% overall, 39% from 3, and 67% at the line while averaging 73.2 ppg.

Wheaton is shooting 55% from the field, 41% on 3s, and 81% at the line, while averaging 83 points per game. Their opponents: 34% from the field, 18% from three, and 70% at the line while averaging 54 ppg.

One would think that Chicago will pull out of their shooting slump at some point, and Wheaton is very aware that the Maroons are a very dangerous 0-5 team. Wheaton's pressure D should be able to force Chicago into tough/bad shots.

I think the biggest things for Wheaton are 1) a good start, 2) force tough shots, 3) offensive balance. I think that these are things they have done well so far this season and are very important tomorrow night against a very perplexing Chicago team. Looking at those numbers, it is easy to see why they are 0-5, but it seems they are bound to snap out of this funk eventually. Hopefully not tomorrow

Titan Q

Final:

Olivet Nazarene 76
IWU 63

After leading 31-25 at halftime, it sounded like IWU just played terribly on both ends in the 2nd half.  ONU took the lead for good with about 11:00 to play but the game was still very close until the Tigers went on a 9-0 run with about 5:00 to play to separate for good and secure the win.

IWU couldn't throw it in the ocean tonight from beyond the arc or from the free throw line.  I haven't heard the final shooting stats yet, but they must be really ugly.

I'm pretty sure Olivet Nazarene is a pretty good team that would fit into the CCIW mix at about the #5 slot...but no better than that.  Even with a young team on the road, this was a disappointing loss for the Titans in my eyes.

Fortunately, since this was not a D3 in-region game, the loss doesn't hurt the Titans at all.

Q,

it's a bit early but I am thinking IWU has the right stuff to beat WashU later this week. What will it take to win in St Louis?

Keelan, Adam and Zach would be a good start.
If we're picking IWU players, I'll go with the above, -Adam +Jimmy.... Just cause I can. :D

More seriously, how about.... Kent Raymond, Andy Wiele, Ben Panner...?  8)

Good luck to the Thunder tomorrow in the ugly gym. :)

Titan Q

The Titans shot 3-18 from 3 and 12-24 from the FT line.  Considering the caliber of shooters IWU has, that's hard to believe.  IWU had all kinds of chances to pull away in the 1st half, and early in the 2nd, by knocking down what sounded like great looks from beyond the arc.

In the WJBC postgame Ron Rose summed the night up by saying, "We looked young."

April, my prediction, FWIW, is that at some point this season, the freshman McCrary might replace Panner in that trio.

AndOne, they've only played 3 games.  It's a little early to be pointing out how Panner stacks up on the team at this point.  We're talking about a junior who has played impressively for 2 seasons.  I would say that Panner's stats from last Friday night, previously referenced, were uncharacteristic in the context of his career.  While I'm too lazy to look up his career numbers, I would bet they're pretty solid and that we'll see more Panner-esque performances in the not-too-distant future.

Pete--

Given your "defense" of Mr. Panner just last week, I'm a bit surprised that you're ready to supplant him from Wheaton's big three so quickly, especially in favor of an inexperienced freshman. I'm interested in your reasoning for the switch. Thanks.

They are two seperate issues in my mind.  When I originally commented on Panner, it was to say that if Panner had had a typical, for him, performance that night, the margin of victory would have been even greater than it was, and would make the Thunder difficult to defeat by anyone that night.  That doesn't mean that McCrary won't become the third most effective player for the Thunder by the end of the season, after Raymond and Wiele, and that was all I was suggesting in my comment to April.  That's not criticism of Panner.  It's how impressed I am with McCrary, his potential, his well-rounded game, and his size/agility after seeing him a couple of times this season as well as once or twice in high school.

Well the first of 3 big games lying ahead of Elmhurst to see if the Jays are for real is tonight vs. UWL.  I still have some doubts about this team. I have seen them play well and seen them almost cough up (should be type) of wins.
Since 2001, lately it seems that when Elmhurst is flying off the radar, they play well and win most games.  Then once they get ranked pretty high, they flop.  Hope that doesn't happen tonight.

For what it's worth Pete, and this is obviously sight unseen, I definitely get your point and hesitated before typing that. However, my statement was made based on the game being this weekend, and I think those three would be the "big three" (though I just don't think it's fair to say Wheaton only has a big three, I only did that cause everyone else was listing three players :P ).

I am definitely watching Mr. Tim McCrary with interest. There have been a whole lot of recent All-Conference caliber players at Wheaton who are in our record books for various reasons who never got as many minutes as freshman as McCrary (who is averaging 26ppg)... for example, Jon Nielson (18min), Martin Trimeau (16min), Nate Collard (21mins) etc . The only ones who have more are Kevin Blomstrom (31), Joel Kolmodin (29), Kent Raymond (30) who are all easily All American quality players. The only comparable one timing wise is Any Wiele (25mins) who is obviously outstanding now and always had good potential to be awesome, was NOT ready his frosh year and arguably only played so much because there were almost no big man options for the Thunder.

It's pretty obvious that the coaches have faith in him, and on a stacked team, his stats are quite impressive. Thunder fans have a lot to be happy about this season.  :)

If McCrary "bulks" up like Andy did I don't see how he can be stopped.  He has the moves and skills right now but he lacks a little on the strength esp. on rebounding and holding his post positions.  Andy is the post player now but I see Mr. McCrary moving into that if his body fills out over his tenure.  For that matter Carwell seems to have hit the weights as well and looks to be stronger more of a force in the paint as well.
These two guys give the Thunder a lot of tools in the post and will help and have helped to open things up on the perimeter for Panner, Raymond, Jahns, and the new guy with a lot of "e's" in his name.  :)

Look for Ryan Burks to have a big one tonight against UWL. He is ready for a real big one tonight and I need it from him. He is going to put the team on his back and take one deep for them. Twice.

They like donuts, bully. Offer them donuts, and tell them that they can go ahead and eat all the donuts that they want because they don't look fat. I absolutely guarantee that Chicago cops will be your best friends forever if you do that. Oh, and ask them if they'll let you hold their guns. They really like that, too.
