Well I guess its public.......but it doesn't say anything about him actually enrolling at Hope or playing basketball.

This would be a good pickup for the future, let alone this season.

I doubt we'll see him in a Dutchmen uniform this season, but at the same time I wouldn't put it passed GVW. Besides, he has to come in and compete with the likes of Immink, Partridge, Cramer and Carlson for the 1 and 2 spots.

Another question, for Sac, FDF, or anyone that knows.
I have some data I would like to post in a table.  I see the table icon, but how do I fill in the data, and make sure I have enough rows and columns?  Thanks in advance for any help given.

Welcome aboard. Play around and see what you get--that's about all anyone on this site can tell you. Many of us struggled with no tutorial upon first opening... Use the "Preview" button next to the "Post" button to see your work before you submit. My guess is that cut/paste and trial-and-error will be your friends.

Van Solkema would be a nice addition this season were they 0-13 instead of 13-0. I think chemistry and unity is a big concern for GVW and he probably wouldn't want to rock the boat at this point.

What is with the Roman numeral III on the back of Hope's warmup jersies?  Anyone with an answer let me know.

I would be surprised if he did not play.  He has ten semesters for four seasons.  He has three semesters in already.  He would give up the year and I think he is elligable . . . scholarship to no scholarship = play now.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you!   ;)  Seriously, even some of their parents don't know.  And I was sworn to secrecy, so you'll never hear it from me.  Sorry. :-X

Flash96,
Rumor has it that the III represents Hope's goal of winning three championships (MIAA regular season, MIAA tournament, NCAA tournament).  Some others believe that the three championships are the Select Bank Classic, The Holland Sentinel Community Tournament and the Russ DeVette Holiday Tournament.  Either way, pretty bold for a team that went 15-12 last year.

Also, Civic Minded, secrets don't make friends.

There is more to Hope College than baskteball *gasp!* And since he did not explicitly say that he was transferring to pursue further advancement in athletics, he may not have any interest at all.

Unless Van Solkema and GVW have been talking and nobody knows about it, I think it would be very difficult for someone completely new to the coach and the program to come in and walk on to a team that's already loaded at the 1 and 2 spots, not to mention 13-0 and ranked #2 in the country.

But then again who knows, odder things have happened. I guess we'll just have to wait and see  ;D

As I recall. Hope had the same Roman numeral III on their warmups last year as well. If it represents the three tournament victory goals, which seems the best explanation, isn't it sort of sad to have the exact same motivational ploy two years in a row.

There is going to be some amazing MIAA basketball this week.
Tribes of primitve hunters, with rhinestone codpieces rampant, should build pyramids of Chevy engines covered in butterscotch syrup to exalt the diastolic, ineffable, scintillated and cacophonous salamander of truth which slimes and distracts from each and every orifice of your holy refrigerator.

While you might have seen a shirt or two with the III on the back last year, they would have been 'left-overs' from another time.  This is the second time the III has shown up on warm ups, but the first time (at least as I recall it) was about 2-3 years ago -- the year that Hope played in the tournament in Florida.

You're right about some amazing basketball coming up -- I can't wait to hear everyone's scores this week! :o

Another transfer to Hope?

Word on the street is that's where Derek Van Solkema is headed, leaving EMU.

Where woud he play?  Its getting to the point with Hope that the number of players is going to be a disadvantage to its recruiting.

Nice problem to have, but still a problem.

And I'll make a prediction here.  Hope will not win the NCAA Div III championship.  WV will find a way to waste the talent he has.

Arena, I agree that Hope likely will not win the national championship.  With some 400 teams competing, it's highly unlikely that any given team will win (even Illinois Wesleyan, I'm sure Titan Q would agree).  Statistically, a national championship is a much more unlikely event for a DIII school than a DI school (given that they have just 100+ competing schools).  Even a top ten ranking is 1 in 40.

Regarding if and when Van Solkema may start playing, surely Civic Minded will have the scoop before long.

pointlem, all I know from following Illinois Wesleyan and Division III for about 16 years now is that it is very, very hard to win a national championship.  So many things have to go your way, including a ton of luck.

IWU's team that won it in 1997 was probably not as good as the 1996 team that lost to Rowan in the national semifinal (the Rowan team that defeated Hope for the title the next night).  Many feel IWU's 1995 team that lost to Steve Alford's Manchester squad in the Elite 8 was better than the '97 team too.

With the way the Division III selection process works, it is hard just to get into the tournament.  And then once you're in, sometimes the pairings are brutal -- often you're playing in someone else's gym in the sectional, which is really tough.  It is so very different from D1 where 1 plays 64, 2 plays 63, etc. and all games are on a neutral court.

So yes, for even the best teams in the country the odds of actually winning the national championshp are not very good.  But that is also why it is so special when it does happen.

The III appeared on the back of the shirts in 2003.  It's the same thing this year as that year.  I. Win the league II. Win the MIAA tournament III. One seed in the region.

You play the regular season for the best route to the Salem Civic Center. I think playing all your games at home would be the best way to do that.  Does the Great Lakes host the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight this year or did they do away with that alternate region system?

They did away with that alternate region system.  At least in name.
