That would be no freshman on the roster on the website.  Hope actually has a freshman playing varisty (who has not played with the JV)

10   Jesse Reimink...........6-04, 225

And he's been pretty impressive on a stacked team.

in 9 games, he's averaging 10 minutes, 2.9 boards, and 4 points.

From what I've seen, I'd go with Veldhouse from Calvin. That kid is going to be all sorts of problems in the coming years.

I've already posted my picks for this week on the MIAA Pick 'Em page, but I wanted to get some more random thoughts on record before I run to get the garbage out (mama sez do it), and hit the road for work, and before tonight's games start.

Hope vs Albion--several posters have pointed out the recent history of road-teams winning.  I predict that to continue this season, road team winning both games in this match-up.

Adrian vs Calvin--I predict the Bulldogs will sweep the Knights for the regular season in this match-up.

I could be wrong.   ???  Time will tell.  If necessary, I'll eat my words.  Maybe with some of that DeVos Heinz catsup and mustard.   ;)

Having seen no other MIAA team besides Adrian, Henry McCain has a huge upside.  He is still a bit raw, but is athletic, can guard 4 positions on the floor, and can rebound with 6-8 post players.  The kid can play!

My prediction for Hope this week, Albion and Calvin.  I believe that Hope will go 1-1.  If they lose to Albion tonight, they will come back strong at home against Calvin on Saturday.  If they beat Albion tonight then they will come back flat on Saturday and lose to Calvin.  Should they prove me wrong I would be pleased.  Just depends on how GVW can motivate the kids.

Thoughts on the tournament.  It is an incredibly difficult road to the final four, much less a National title victory.  I recall in '95 a Hope team that went 26-0 in the regular season, ran into BW that beat Hope at the Dow Center.  Hope's run in '96 wasn't the easiest as they had to defeat a difficult K-Zoo team in the first round of the tournament.  I believe their second round game was also a close one, can't recall who they played.

Wouldn't Hope's two transfers count?  I am not saying that they would rate over Veldhouse but I am saying that there is a difference between new comer of the year and freshmen of the year.

How is Evan Hare doing at Hope?

Because Voisin has stepped up his center-playing abilities, we don't see much of Hare. I think when he's in he does fine, but he can't compete with Voisin at the moment. Personally I think there is a lot of talent in Hare, and hopefully we'll see it develop this season.

Yes, I think the transfers SHOULD count, or Flea needs to change the title of that post ;) In that case, I'd still probably put Veldhouse at the top, but Hopesters would not be far behind.

Well I believe Marcus VanderHeide has to be considered the top newcomer.  He's been solid for Hope thus far and really forced teams to play Hope a little more straight up down low.  He's a potentiall All-MIAA'er.

As for Freshman.......

I think Drew Yancy from Albion might be the best Fr., I'll get a good look at him tonight.  As FDF said Reimink has been very impressive for Hope thus far.......fearless is a pretty good word to describe him.

Calvin's got a group of Fr's and one of them will probably stand out my years end.

Kzoo's McCain showed obviously athletic ability here in Holland but he didn't do much, but then none of the Hornets did.  I'll have to get a second look at him to really get a good opinion of him, I'll write of the Hope game as a bad game.

Everyone be safe on the roads and enjoy the basketball

Go Hope!

Flash96--Kzoo was indeed Hope's closest game of the 96 Final Four run.  From there Hope beat John Carroll 80-61 at the Dow Center and as I recall it wasn't really that close.

The next weekend Hope went to Springfield OH and whipped UW-Whitewater 88-66.  The next night they played the hosts Wittenberg and beat them 69-60 in a great game, but was in hand the last couple minutes with FT's.

In the Final Four Hope beat Franklin & Marshall 88-66.  This is of course the year they faced S-T-A-C-K-E-D Rowan in the final.  D3 now has transfer rules commonly referred to as  "The Rowan Rule"

It was a great ride, topped only by going back 2 years latter and getting to host the Sectional here in Holland, and again whipping everyone on the way to the Final.

If VanSolkema suits up for Hope, that makes five transfers in this season, right?  And not a single one of them from a Juco, correct?  This has to be some kind of record in the MIAA, doesn't it?

Sure is a nice benefit for schools like Hope (All 4, mayeb 5!!) and Albion (Crawford, Fulse) to get transfer players.

Not sure why it happens, but it is a benefit that helps keep them on top of the league.  Getting more mature, ready-to-play individuals only helps your program continue at a high level...

And yes, I am jealous...

Looks like the health stuff is going to mandate that I not make the trip to Albion tonight.  I was really looking forward to this game.  Should be VERY exciting.

So... Mario (a.k.a. SAC) - take it easy on I-94.  At least the roads won't be icy or as dangerous like in past years!

Has anyone heard anything on the health of Scott Richardson for Hope?

GO HOPE!
