Civic Minded

At the risk of starting something I'll regret later, but with the hope of hearing some great stories, what has been your favorite MIAA moment?

2014 MIAA Pick 'Em Champion  :)

For me Civic it goes back to the Civic and the "Miracle on 8th Street" in 1990 when Hope women won the National Championship.   Still the best and most dramtic rally in the last 8  minutes of a game I've ever witnessed......ahem, and the most controversial ending.  I think that tops the list, it proved that Hope and MIAA teams could infact win National Championships.

Two others I thought were pretty cool........Hope v Calvin OT game played at Albion College when people were unsure how big the crowd would be, duplicated with this years matchup at Aurora.  Throw in Albion hosting the MIAA tournament and proving its still a great event even when its not in Holland or GR.

Calvin v Albion in the quarterfinals in 05.

Michael Thomas' shot to beat JCU in the same tournament and the pandemonium afterwards, the swing in emotions of the people around me in the last 3 minutes was dramatic.........wish I'd seen it go in though. :D

Eric Viney's last second 3 for Defiance to beat Calvin in the 99 MIAA semifinals........setup the first and only non Hope or Calvin team Championship game.

Hope's 2 rally's in the 02 semi finals against Kzoo and Calvin, I believe they were down 17 in both games and came back to win both games on Calvin's home floor.   First time a game at Calvin felt like a home game.

Steve Cramer going 6-6 from 3 in about 5 minutes this year vs Alma.

All the supersweet and cool people I've met through this site and through following Hope and MIAA basketball.

I think my favorite MIAA memory may echo one of SAC's. For me it would be GVW win 499 in the semifinals of the MIAA tourney. It was a classic Hope-Calvin OT game in 2003. Veenstra and Don Overbeek battled the entire game and both carried their teams in a dramatic and exciting win. Most exciting game I have ever witnessed in person.
Tribes of primitve hunters, with rhinestone codpieces rampant, should build pyramids of Chevy engines covered in butterscotch syrup to exalt the diastolic, ineffable, scintillated and cacophonous salamander of truth which slimes and distracts from each and every orifice of your holy refrigerator.

I've never seen a better finish to a game than that Mike Thomas 3 pointer to beat John Carroll, and I don't think I ever will.  From an MIAA-wide standpoint, that's the best game I've seen, and it was a great win for the Britons.  Unlike Sac, I saw it go through, and I'm still not sure how he made it.

From a purely personal standpoint, the Adrian win over Hope in the Civic in the MIAA semifinals will forever be my favorite.  I'm sure I'll be smited for having brought up such a sore subject, but that was definitely my favorite game, among lots of good ones.

Favorite MIAA moments (limited to those I saw in person)...

1.  Jason DeKuiper's 3-ball at the halftime buzzer of the Calvin/McMurray regional final of the 2000 tournament.  It felt like the fieldhouse roof would blow off.

2.  Same tournament, round one, Nate Burgess' tip at the buzzer to beat Franklin.  He came from nowhere, flew over a couple of taller players and landed on his back as time expired.  Especially memorable because it happened on the north basket only a few feet from where I sat.  (The north bleachers/north basket proximity is one of my favorite features of the fieldhouse and probably will be lost in the new barn.)

3. Wink's miracle 3 to force OT vs Hope, same year.  (That was one magical season.)

4. Tony Westhouse's windmill dunk from the left wing vs.  Alma.  I think it was MIAA tournament round one.  Not sure which year, but still the best D3 dunk I've seen in person.

5.  Not favorite, but certainly memorable...Brett Quayle's 3 to steal Calvin's homecoming game at the fieldhouse (2002?).  That guy consistently killed the Knights but had sat the whole game with an injury (ankle, I think).  Down 2 with just seconds left, Turner calls time to set up the last play and inserts #3 into the line-up.  First touch he buries the triple, buzzer, game Albion.  Unforgettable.

Several moments stand out , funny which ones stick in your mind:

In-Person:

Calvin getting beat up until they started running the right plays to break the press against Macmurray in 2000, and the fieldhouse just getting so loud as Calvin took control.

Honderd's 61 point game. I recall a strong dunk toward the end of the game (even though it still took OT to win).

Foltice's runner in THE semi's in 00.  Winkle off to the side of the floor, alone after the 2000 Nat'l Championship game (I think he was giving thanks) before jumping into the pile of celebrating teamamtes.

The chants against NJ State in the 92 Semi's, and the sudden realization Calvin had gone all the way inthe Finals.

Hennink's string of threes while getting hammered in the last 45 seconds to rally and send a Hope game into OT (though I think Hope prevailed)

Best TV moment: The comeback in 06 and Veldhouse faking out Immink and nailing the three.  I still have a wave file of Dougie-fresh's call of that one.

Best Radio moment: 5 guys gradually wandering away from a dinner party at my pastor's house, to lay on the floor around a radio to listen to one of the early tournament squeakers in 92.

Here are my most memorable...

Hope v Calvin game (lots of them, but this one stands out): Jake Hogeboom punching the ball away from everyone as time ran out on the final Hope/Calvin clash in the Civic Center - won by Hope

Hope v anyone else game - Andy Phillips putting up 45 on Tri-State

Non Hope game - The shots by Mike Thomas to beat JCU.  Not only was the last second 35 foot three the most amazing single shot I have ever seen in person, but that was the second shot he made in the last 6 or 7 seconds.  The other was length of the floor drive for a layup.

Pregame - Several years ago (I would guess 5 or 6) Hope warming up at Calvin in their traditional blue traveling uniforms, going into the locker room for the typical last talk with the coach, and coming out in the new orange uniforms, and the crowd going crazy.

Timeout - This is probably the most memorable moment of all, and the thing I remember most was the total silence for what seemed like minutes, but probably lasted 3-5 seconds...

Dew Crew:  "where's your freshman... where's your freshman..."

Knight Club:  "where's your banner...  where's your banner..."

Dew Crew:  "we've got yours"

WOW!!!!  Now's there's something new that we haven't heard about before!!!  Can someone bring that dead horse graphic out just one more time?   ::)

calvin_grad

LOL!! One dead horse deserves another.  We haven't ever heard about the brilliant "Where's your banner?" cheer before.  ::) ::)

Why don't we just agree to call a truce and drop both dead horses.

So if that's your favorite MIAA memory, you need to go to a few more games.  That's about as common as an MIAA ref making a bad call.    ;D

Actual favorite memories...

  • Rushing out of an environmental engineering class to get to the fieldhouse, having to sit in the upper level (when students actually came to Calvin games), and seeing Honderd pour in 63? versus Kalamazoo in OT.
  • Any game Joe Hacklin was coaching.
  • Standing and screaming from the 5th row as Calvin finished their Championship run in '92 with a Mark Lodewyk reverse, double-pump jam at the buzzer.
  • Hennink's barrage of 3-pointer's versus Hope.

knights2000

I've loved all the Calvin/Hope games, but here's my favorite non Calvin/Hope game.

Calvin down by 20 to Albion at Albion in the second half before staging a comeback. Dan Aultman nailed a prayer to send it into OT. Unfortunately, the Knights couldn't pull out the victory in that one.
