i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

AlwaysHope

I posted a year ago, but my best memory was when Hope beat Calvin 104 - 102 in 1965 in a double overtime.  Hope was down by 2 points with about 23 seconds left in the double overtime, when the Calvin player makes the first of a one and one (making it a 2 possesion game, before the 3 point shot) while getting ready to shoot the 2nd free throw.  But the point is taken off the board because he had his toe on the line!  Never seen that call before or after.

Hope goes on to tie it on a layup, and then with the clock ticking down, Calvin misses the game-winner, and the Hope player (freshman Don Kronemeyer) gets fouled as the buzzer goes off.  The refs rule the foul occurred just before the buzzer, so Kronemeyer goes to the line alone, with no time left and no one under the basket.  He makes the first of a one and one and gets carried off the floor on the shoulders of players and fans.  Order is restored, and he makes the second shot.  He gets carried off the field again!

Hope goes on to win the undisputed MIAA crown by the length of a Calvin College toe, thanks to a shot that was made about one minute after the buzzer went off, followed by the second shot probably five minutes later!

You had to have been at the Civic Center to really appreciate it!  It was my freshman year.

It's funny, when I was closest to Hope when we lived in Michigan  in the early 80's, there were so many wins, that somehow the LOSSES made a bigger impression - the hurt was more than the elation of victory - so to share a few heartbreaks

1)   Losing to Wabash and Pete Metzelaars in the early 80's in a sectional at Hope.  I remember another kid from Wabash because of his unusual name, Merlin Nice, had a career night that night  -  Hope had a great comeback in the second half, keyed by Matt Neill who played his heart out trying to stop Wabash's big man, but fell short.

2) A year or two later, going down to Depauw for the regional, no 1 in the nation, undefeated, up on Heidelberg by 19 at half, and a little guard for Heidelberg couldn't miss in the 2nd half, beating us singlehanded.  Worse yet, we lose a consolation game the next night, and the DePauw students ridicule us all night  -  I hated it - fastest trip Greencastle to Holland ever    after that game.

3)  In that same era, a year before or after, we go to a regional at Wittenburg  -  Hope has the game seemingly wrapped up, but in the last minute, there's a phantom foul called by Larry Hunter's refs on Hope big man Dan Gustad, which is his fifth, them a phantom technical as Glen doesn't get a sub in quick enough - Witt wins

4) We moved to St Louis and I missed Hope hoops so badly  -   a year or two later came up to see a Hope  - Calvin game at Calvin, I think it was in the tourney - and 6'7" Matt Strong miss a point blank layup at the buzzer and Hope loses by 1.  It hurt, but not as bad as it must have hurt Matt.

5) And I get the opportunity to go down to see the final 4 - Hope plays so well - Holstege is unbelievable - but we can't beat Rowan's Div 1 players - a sidelight was the unbelievable sight of a huge Illinois Wesleyan crowd staying after their game to cheer for Hope in the final.

now then I could also list Hope's loss to Wash U this past year, which I travelled up to see in Wisconsin, but given that Wash U is now my Home team, it didn't sting quite as bad  -  but being with Sac, Gohope, Flying Dutch, and Civic among others, I felt the pain....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

I can still remember the backboard exploding at the Civic Center as two Hope guys hit it together. I was right up front across from the bench. It was a beautiful sight to see the glass just fly. I still have pieces of it

In '96 on our way to THAT GAME against Rowan in the NCAA's our first win was against K (4th time playing them, 3rd time in 6 games). Don't exactly remember how it all went down, but remember Joel Holstege driving the lane toward the end of the end of the game to either put us up or tie the game... Never the less it was very exciting.

And just as thrilling, after the game I was walking across the floor behind a male Hope cheerleader, who was receiving an onslaught of "alternative lifestyle" bombs from an upset/drunk K footballer. Catching the eye of a police officer directly behind him, I commented to the loud sot about how embarrassing it would be to get his butt kick by a cheerleader. Inciting the exact reaction I was looking for, quickly got him grabbed by the cop and tossed out of the building!

A good night indeed!!!

Knight Club:  "where's your banner...  where's your banner..."

Dew Crew:  "we've got yours"

Wassn't that the 2005 game at the Civic Center?

That is correct.

On a different front, Adrian's hockey team, which will play it's first season next year, has the top ranked DIII recruiting class in the country, according to collegehockeyrecruits.com.

What level of hockey will Adrian be playing? NCAA D3? AHCA? Other?

here is a link to the Adrian schedule
http://www.adrian.edu/sports/m_icehockey_schedule.php

I was not aware they were building and on campus ice arena.

sac

I think I read on the football board that Adrian is playing in D3 and their schedule would suggest that.

Anyone else find it funny that Adrian had a special link for Canadian students to apply on their hockey site. :D
