nothing personal against coach Passage, but in the future I would probably concentrate my recruiting in MI (specifically WM) during the AAU season- Gr storm, laker, and cdba tourneys, etc... rather than using college $ to fly out to vegas to watch kids he has no chance of recruiting

Whoever plays in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Also note from Jane Bos' June 30 entry: the new coach @ EGR is a Hope alum...pretty sure he was in the same class and a student assistant for the Dutch with former WO coach Doug Ammeraal...say what you want about GVW's integrity--he sure puts a lot of kids into the coaching ranks. I think it's gotta be above 30-40 now???

don't need to see his calendar stinger, saw him with my own eyes.  Have made the trip 6 years running.  For anyone who loves watching basketball, although not in its purest form, it is a must. Truthfully, I have no ties to Hope, but I am amazed yearly at the shear number of players who go there to play ball, I mean, get an education when so many other quality programs in the state, at the d3 level struggle to bring them in even though their academic reputation is as good or better. Carter and Bowser to Alma? Sharples to Adrian? Sutton, snyder, tanis, allen, vandemere, Kelvin Devries, etc... to K-zoo? Why not? That's got to be a run-on sentence or something. Stupid GVSU degree

sorry stinger, just received your e-mail, and my gvsu education cannot figure out how to respond.  You're right maybe it wasn't vegas.  It was either indy, north carolina, or louisville though, although i'm still confident it was vegas.  I was sitting with a parent from the k-zoo area actually, and they wondered aloud what the heck he was doing there.  Black shirt, orange K on the chest, K college notebook.....

Who's whining?

Sorry dude! Heard it before from the K camp... just sounded that way to me.

The funny thing about the "ton of incoming freshmen" is not the basketball recruits, but the football ones. Thank God for Dean and his 75 incoming freshmen. By the time they are seniors though, less than a third will still be suiting up, yet this year they make up almost half the team!

And after looking at the team photo, Dean looks like the most  ::) diverse recruiter as well.

Sorry... Back to basketball!

Hey, easy with the football chatter.  Us Calvin fans don't know what that is.

Anyone know when we can expect to see the 07/08 rosters posted?  It seems to be about this time of year, usually.

Calvin's got Strunk, a kid from Unity and Bryan VanHarn from GRCHS coming in that I know of.  Sort of a lackluster class after a very good one (Mantel, Veltema, etc) the year before.

Anyone know if they have any transfers or out-of-state kids coming in?

Calvin's going to need the 6'9" Schuster kid and 6'6" Engelsma to really step up and fill in for the departed group of Meckes/Snoeyink/DeVries.

The last thing I want to see if Mantel at 5 and Zoerhof at 4.  If Calvin can solidify inside, they have shot at doing some damage this year.

Oh, and it's it tryout time right now at Hope?

I've sure seen VanderHeide out at the local watering holes quite a bit lately (that means I've been there too....so I'm not knocking him)....just interesting.

Schuster isn't much of a big.  His torso is about as thick as my forearm, he also likes to shoot the 3.  Engelsma should fill in a bench role nicely though he rebounded well on the JV squad.  Look for the Knights to start John Mantel and Tim Katt in the front court.  Katt will be a hustle player like Bear DeVries was.

My guess is Veldhouse, Griffin, and Veltema will round out the starting lineup.

Of course, if Rob went to the local AAU tournaments, he'd have to deal with coaches who don't want their kids to play DIII, because scholarships are the lure they use to get kids onto their teams.

This from someone who sponsors one of the tournaments mentioned above, and an AAU team.

Of the 14 incoming first year's on K's roster, 13 are from the state of Michigan. I'm pretty sure RP works the state pretty damn hard.

Definitely never saw them at this time of year, since the first day they can "legally" get together is still several months away (October 15).  We're not gonna hear much of anything before that - except confirmation that someone is enrolled in the school.

Better that than bringing it to campus and getting suspended for 10 games. Glad to hear that he's a normal college kid.

I saw my neighbor at Darb's last night and last Thursday  (mind you I was there .......so i'm not knocking him)......just interesting, mostly because he owns the other bar in town.

ps  .....Darb's is a local (to me) restaurant/bar.......I recommend the King Burrito......its the "King of all Burritos", and the nacho's supreme will blow you away with its size.  You can play Keno, listen to a little juke box music,  Seger seems to be the most popular choice, but if your lucky you might get a little Stevie Ray Vaughn.  You can play a little pool,  but I'd avoid the 14 year old kid who looks 11, I think he's a hustler.  They have a nice 40 inch old school big screen tv thats permanently tuned to ESPN but I'd hardly call this place a sports bar.  In the back they have a couple video games, the most popular is not surprisingly a hunting game of some kind.  On Weekend nights they have live music, last week they had a local rock band.....with a cello, kid was good too.

The most shocking thing to me is the number of people who are 21 who actually like to go to the bar, during the summer, when school isn't in session.   Scandalous!

Rumor up in Alma is that the scots are in contract negotiations with Chuck Dailey. Chuck is all set to come but he is negotiating/holding out with the A.D trying to get two full time assistants instead of one. They are said to be Brendan Sura and Brendan Malone. Also Chuck is trying to convince Mike Abdenhour that working with the Scots instead of Alma is a good career move. More to come on this story later.

Seriously what could be taking them so long? I feel bad for their players.
