Scott Pederson (sp?) a former Glen Assistant, went on to GVSU (for a masters) and was one of Terry's assistants.

Anyone know what happened to him? Is he coaching somewhere?

I've been away from the area for too long to be familiar with Coach Smith, but it sure reads like a great hire  -  best of luck to him
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Maybe I'm wrong on this, I'm certainly  no expert on former GVSU coaches.  But I think the knock on him at GVSU was he didn't always have a great relationship with players.  Very demanding.  I seem to remember quite a bit of turnover in the GVSU program while he was there.

I certainly believe a couple of guys who ended up at MIAA schools had their issues with Smith.  But I think Smith laid a good foundation for GVSU's successes after he left.

But again I could be way off on this.  My knowledge of GVSU's program is anecdotal at best.

I will add, that what Alma needs is a good recruiter first.  Then they need to work on keeping those recruits in school.  Kohtala actually had a couple great recruiting classes, its just none of them stayed more than 2 seasons.  I have to believe in its current state, Alma is the most challenging job in the MIAA.

From Alma's announcement:
"In 2007, Coach Smith got the itch to return to college coaching and began a blitzkrieg attack, similar to that he uses in recruiting, on the Alma College hiring committee. His tactics proved affective as he has been charged with the task of making the Alma College Basketball program a team to reckon with in the MIAA. "

Sounds to me like he had to beg to get the Alma job...

I thought that sounded a bit strange as well.  Not sure he is the right kind of coach to turn around this program.

The press release also says " after the 2003-04 season Coach Smith decided to take some time away college coaching and return to the high school class room ..."  I believe that GVSU helped him make that decision.  ::)

There was a Scott Peterson--a grad of Grand Rapids Union High School--who played the point for Hope in the 1970's. I don't remember him being a Hope assistant (or at GVSU either) but considering the ridiculous number of coaches the Flying Dutch carry every year that would be too much to ask of an OldKnight anyway. You can't tell the coaches without a lengthy scorecard in Holland. I played rec ball against him for a couple of years and he was a nice player and I remember him being an even nicer opponent--not full of himself as sometimes can be seen from former college players who play rec ball. I don't remember hearing his name in 25 years and I have no idea what happened to him.

Does Dan Aultman ring a bell? Thanks Terry. ;D

If you believe Mlive's miaa chat, he was the 3rd person to be offered the position behind a current and former assistant.

Oldknight--Scott Pederson, with a 'd' is much younger, probably near 30 by now.

..........and thank Mr Smith for Eric Voisin........thanks? ;) :D

Interesting, too, that Alma would use that type of wording in its new release.

Last season's senior class  (plus Callistus Eziukwu, who red-shirted) at Grand Valley was recruited by Smith/Steve Ernst, and those guys made it the DII semis. That recruiting approach was by volume, and a few guys panned out it seems.
