At some point in their careers Immink, Kleersnyder and Spaman all made MIAA 1st team. I think Griffith made 2nd team one year. Plus don't forget about Jack Klunder, an incredible athlete from Hopkins who played JV and 3rd string point guard for his other 3 years. He was the energy for some of those squads.

That's a tough class to top.

However, I would agree that as a whole they didn't have the high school careers that this year's frosh had, nor the D-1 / D-2 scholarship attention...quite the testament for the rise in AAU's prominence among the NCAA consciousness. In addition to the 4 named, a few to watch for the future could be Keyser, Guimond, Carroll, Weise.

hoopd writes, "this crop of incoming frosh COULD leave a mark never before seen in the MIAA."   I hope you realize the bar for that statement is already rather high.  ;)  Calvin had two frosh that became/were starters in 99-00,  they won the MIAA championship 14-0, the MIAA tournament, and a National Championship.  Are you really sure this group of Hope frosh can equal or better that?    ???  I tend to agree that Hope did have another great recruiting year, but that fact alone doesn't get you any W's.  :)

Freshman are still freshman!

Lets not forget Hope is 0 for the last century in actually makeing it to game 1 with a full compliment of uninjured players.

With regards to Freshman class success, on the Hope side its the 1998 Sr's.

That class which included Joel Holstege among others (don't have my cheat sheet with me) won 4 straight MIAA Championships, 3 MIAA tournament Championships, went 45-3 in MIAA regular season play.  As freshman completed a 25-0 regular season.  Made 4 NCAA tournament appearances, made it twice to the Final Four and finishing runner-up twice, and a 3rd Sectional in 1997.

Hope went 105-14 from 95-98

They also had a 9-0 record vs Calvin.

You'll be very hard pressed to have any freshman class top that as far as Hope is concerned.

Well if this year's freshmen can come even remotely close to some of those accomplishments it should be another great 4 years ahead.

And why did we have to mention injuries? :o Its just the second day! Can't we stay positive until at least next week! ;D I really really believe this is the year Hope breaks the pre-season injury curse!

I would also like to note that sometime over the summer the MIAA board surpassed the CCIW board for number of pages. We are still many views behind, they must have a huge number of lurkers, but I am pleased to see the MIAA is the most active posting board!

And with the start of practice, the league comes out of hibernation.  Good grief, I had to do some actual reading to catch up today.

And I really believe the Cubs will win the World Series next year too!   ;) :D ;D :)    And to hijack this conversation for just a moment -- Go Rockies!  Yay step-cousin Clint!   ;D

Mr. Ypsi

CM, I had never had reason to be a Rockies fan, but when they voted a full post-season share to Mike Coolbaugh's family (the coach who was tragically killed by a foul ball) even though he had been in the Rockies' organization only a few weeks, I became one.  That was classy!

[BTW, they are undefeated since I joined their fan club, just in case anyone wants to start a bidding war for my support! ;D]

Yeah, voting the share to his family was an amazingly classy, unselfish act.  I'm not surprised, but I was very touched.

Glad to have you as part of the fan club!  We've been fans, well, since Clint started coaching there (moving up from AAA ball).  Deep down, I will always be a Cubs fan to one degree or another, but family takes priority, always.   :)

Perhaps a synapse or two is misfiring in my noggin, but I don't remember Pat ever having a d3hoops.com All-Freshmen team.

Sac;  Thanks for verifying that the bar for any incoming fr. class is already high at Hope.  The 98 class had a very solid/talented group of upper classmen that they supplemented, and made better.   :)

Yea, I tried to find support for that after I made the statement and failed to do so. I must be thinking that he was merely an All-MIAA team member. Not bad, but certainly not the same as national recognition. Either way I stand by the statement that the bar for this year's freshmen class is high. Clearly the 98 class was amazing both as freshmen and all through their four years. The 2005 class also contributed a lot as freshmen but never lived up to the talent I believe they possessed.

Hopefully, the class of 2011 will be as good as advertised.

Greg did receive national attention as a freshman, but from DIII News.  Strangley enough I found it in a press release from a year later when Jeff Carlson received the same recognition.

Thanks for finding that information! I am glad that my memory is not going completely long before I turn 30.
