Where's the Khaki's?

At least the manager Rob Streken wore them! I didn't notice that at first glance but no one else is in khaki's. Wow, all these changes! I hope Hope is not messing with history too much here. ;) I mean next thing you know they'll limit themselves to just one injury (Sharples) before the first game!

At least they are maintaining the approximate 1:1 ratio of players to non-players in the team photo.  ;D

Is there anyone on this board that will see the Hope-UDM scrimmage tonight? I know its not near Holland I am just hoping somehow someone lived closer and would be there to report back.

I think a report might be arranged...    ;)

After looking closely at the photo, I would lay odds that GVW and Dav are wearing khakis (look closely under the chairs).  Seems possible anyway, and just too shocking for me to admit that they might NOT be wearing them.   ;D

I saved a copy of the photo to my desktop, opened it up in Photoshop, and lightened it up.  Dav & GVW are definitely wearing kahkis.

The earth may now return to its normal rotation.

It appears you are correct.

Dark Knight

The Knights looked good in last Saturday's scrimmage. The starting five were Veldhouse, Griffin, Schuster, Katt, and Mantel. (That's quite a tall line-up! At 6-2, 6-4, 6-10, 6-6, 6-8 it's 3" taller than the 3-guard lineup of the last part of last year, on average.)

I think defense is going to be the challenge, at least for the first part of the year. It probably won't take long for us to find out just how important Meckes and DeVries were on the defensive end of the court. It remains to be seen whether someone on the front court can turn into the kind of defender who can shut down a good scorer and reduce the need for double teaming.

The back court should be pretty solid, with Veldhouse, Griffin, and Smith splitting time at guard, when all three were starters for the last part of last year in a top-20 team. McCray, Strunk, and VanHarn provide depth at that position.

There are lots of options for the front court. Mantel and Zoerhof both started several times last year, and Veltema averaged 15 minutes per game. With Koetsier at full health for just about the first time, Englesma and Schuster who racked up huge numbers on the JV squad, and Zwier as another option, it seems likely that the problem will be not finding quality players as much as finding rotations that work well together and getting the Streek defense working.

So many questions for Civic Minded. I just read the UDM story and looked at the box! Great that we had a huge lead but how did we blow it? Sharples played? I thought he was hurt! MVH didn't play at all! What is wrong? Should we be worried? And all other updates will be great. Thanks.

I agree.  Yes, it was a scrimmage against the JV but I saw 14 guys that could contribute quality minutes.  Koetsier looks like he dropped some weight and is in good condition.  Zoerhof was in control and made several baskets (a few were nice dunks). Van Harn played some good defense.  I really like the depth of this years Calvin team.

On behalf of CM and myself-

First MVH and Cody Canan did not make the trip due to the flu.  Sharples did play, and showed no signs of any ill effects from his shoulder injury.

Hope played a great first half, everyone getting at least 5 minutes of playing time and their defense seemed to really control the game.

The second half was a totally different game.  U of D seemed to realize they were going to have to put forth a very good effort to beat Hope.  Jon Goode single-handedly did that (with some serious help from three guys in striped shirts).  It also took U of D playing starters only (with 2 subs ) the entire second half to beat Hope, while Hope played everyone a few more minutes the second half.

All in all a good evening for the Dutchmen, who found out they have some work to do, but also should know that if they do that work, they are going to be a very good team.  Best part was, nobody got hurt.

It would have been intersting for Hope to have played this team minus Jon Goode, like Albion did, just for comparative purposes.

And the best part of all - seeing sac and GoHope again - ahh basketball  (there was even snow on the way home)
