maybe this year will be the first ever where GVW gets a win with INFERIOR talent over Calvin  ;D  Maybe he could pull on Caleb's shirt to alter his shot.

Someone help me out here...What changed on the site?  The board?  The main pages?  I can's spot the change!  I need to stop counting so many beans...

I guess so!   :D  Mostly a color scheme change on the board.  Posts are alternately beige and blue, making it easier to spot the end of one post and the start of another.

I'm getting beige and white on my screen, not beige and blue. Must be a time-zone thing. ;)

Quote from: oldknight on January 22, 2008, 10:52:47 PMMore info on the parking situation at Knollcrest Saturday. Someone had the bright idea to hold the annual Worship Symposium the same day Calvin hosts Hope.

My church's praise-band director, who is a Calvin alumna and the first cousin of Knights sharpshooter Matt Veltema, asked me if she could attend the Worship Symposium, and as church chair I signed off on it. I should've figured out that the symposium was oh-so-coincidentally scheduled for the weekend of the Hope @ Calvin game. ;)

When she comes back to town, I'm going to ask to see her notes from whatever symposium seminar is being held on Saturday afternoon.  :D

I had a good feeling about the Packers game last Sunday and we all see how that turned out.  I have a bad feeling about this game, does that mean Hope wins.  Who knows it may just be my negative attitude.  I've never claimed to have been psychic.  Come to think of it, I felt good about Hope's chances against B-W.

It's all about your perception (or your color management skillds and whether your monitor is calibrated and profiled).  Looks like an alternating pale blue / pale orange to me    ;D

Could Alma beat Hope tonight.  Possibly, but the probability that happens is not very high.  Can Calvin beat Hope on Sat.  Once again the answer is yes, and the odds of it happening are bettter than Alma's chances tonight.
However, with Calvin at 8-6 Hope has to be considered a distinct favorite.
The best indicator of talent is results, and the records really speak for themselves.

If those notes include abbreviations such as "FG, FGA, FT, FTA, PF, A, TO, and TP" you'll know for sure won't you? That extended Veltema clan is a most clever bunch to be able to pull a fast one on Chairman Sager, don't you think?

I have an analogous problem. Sometimes my wife sees me on the computer and says "Are you reading The Board again?" I generally duck this accusation by stating I'm viewing the Sports Illustrated swimsuit section (or something like that - this is a G-rated board, after all).

My Dad thinks of himself as a real Wiz when it comes to Calvin b-ball.  He is convinced for some reason that Calvin will win Saturday.  I'm not so optimistic but I do believe Calvin will take Hope at the Dick on 2/20.

I, for one, agree with your dad.  Calvin is more talented and has a deeper bench.  When they come ready to play, they win.  The Knights will, of course, be ready to play on Saturday.  Goodknighty now

I mean other than two or three people on this board I think even most Calvin fans would admit that except for the Wash U game Calvin has not provided any proof that it is more talented or has a deeper bench than Hope this year. Is that talent there? Possibly but until Calvin plays that way game in and game out its hard to believe in.

Well, You will see the talent on Saturday.  Until Hope plays Calvin there is no reason to think Hope is more talented.

Reasons to think Hope is more talented:

1.  Overall record.
2.  MIAA record.
3.  Record against common opponents.
4.  Perusal of the MIAA stats page:
    a.  Hope leads 9 (2nd in 5) team categories out of 19 while Calvin leads 2 (2nd in 4);
    b.  Adding their positions in each team category gives Hope a total of 55 and Calvin a total of 59;
    c.  7 Hope players appear a combined 36 times in the indiv. stats--7 Calvin players appear 32 times;
    d.  The 3 Hope FG% leaders all rank higher than the 3 Calvin FG% leaders;
    e.  All of Hope's starters appear in the top 15 in the league in FT%--3 of Calvin's starters appear;
    f.  Hope averages 13 steals per game--Calvin averages 7.5;
    g.  Hope's turnover margin is +6.07--Calvin's is +1.64
5.  Ability to limit opponents' big men's stats, despite Hope giving up the size advantage in the post.
6.  Hope has no one over 26.6 min/game--Calvin has 3
7.  Hope's scoring is maintained better when their bench is in than Calvin's
(etc.)

Reasons to believe that any of that will matter come Saturday at 2pm:

(none)

btw... Couldn't one also say that until Calvin plays Hope, there is no reason to think that Calvin is more talented?  And yet, wasn't it a Calvin poster who first raised the issue?   ::)

Besides, it isn't the amount of raw talent amassed that decides the game.  Just look at the '06 and '07 Yankees.  (Sorry NWHF  ;) )
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

It should also be noted that DeHaan has played in only four games and one of those was Saturday when he hit an unbelievable 6 for 6 from 3-point range. I'm thinking he won't get those kinds of open looks against DVS and Wolfe.

I was actually just going to ask if anyone knew why Ryan Dehaan didn't play the first 9 games of the season.  I don't remember seeing him on the bench vs Oberlin, and the only player in street clothes was Machuta.

Also, I think you'll be surprised at how many open shots Alma is able to create.  I actually liked parts of their offensive sets, and a lot of what they try to do.  Terry Smith is a pretty good x's and o's guy, even if he subs 150 times a game.

GoKnights68

Come on, everyone should know Hope has proven they are the more talented team so far this year.  We'll just have to see how the rest of the season turns out.

That being said, I just h*pe no Calvin players are reading this board recently that is looking ahead to Saturday.  Kalamazoo is going to be tough to beat tonight.

According to the article in the Sentinel today, Ryan Dehaan missed the pre-league schedule due to injuries.
