Just want to send out a quick note to salute K'37 Grad and former MIAA Commissioner Al Deal.  I've never personally met Mr. Deal but I have heard nothing but great things.   He served 20 years as MIAA commissioner.  He is in the Athletic HOF's of both Kalamazoo and Albion and of course has an Award in his honor for Scholar-Athletes.

Cheers Mr. Deal!

I am also in the "no foul" camp but for heaven's sake GUARD THE INBOUND PASS.  Have we learned nothing from Grant Hill and Christian Laettner and every other time the passer has had an open look?

Why not take your tallest longest limbed player e.g. Schuster and put him on the inbounder?  It took a pinpoint inbounds pass to make this play work for Albion and there's no way he could do that with a 6'10" guy in front of him.  This is a specialized situation and calls for specialized personnel usage e.g. the Patriots using Randy Moss to play defense on a Hail Mary.  As it was, the two tallest players on the roster were on the bench on the final play.

Maybe sac is right.  Maybe we shouldn't comment on games we didn't attend.  Had KnightSlappy attended the game he would have seen that Schuster didn't make the trip so it would have been really difficult to get him to the gym, sutied up, and inserted in time for this crucial situation.

In reality, Calvin played it well, Albion played it well, and this time the luck went to Albion.  Like any game, there were mistakes on both sides, but the ending was actually played well by both teams.  Someone wins, someone loses.  It happens.  End of story.

You are correct, had I been at the game I would have seen that Schuster did not make the trip but I don't think that would have prevented Happy Calvin Guy from mentioning Schuster in HIS post.

But seriously, I dont think that HCG's point was that Schuster had to be the guy he just meant a tall guy should stand and prevent the passer from having a good look at the floor.

Now you are getting close to the point I was trying to make all along.  Albion knew what Calvin was going to do in this situation, and had the perfect play, and player ready for it.  Calvin was predictable in the defense it would use.  Putting Mantel or a taller player on the passer increases the degree of difficulty.  The truth is the 5 guys covering 4 guys strategy didn't work.  Turner outcoached KVS, and this isn't the first time that has happened. >:(

And had the shot not gone in, VandeStreek would have outcoached Turner.  My comments and yours are all just conjecture.  DJ made the shot and Albion won.  Five seconds is a long time and any team should be able to get a shot off in that amount of time.  The game was lost when Calvin shot 20% in the first half and what seemed like about 10% in the first ten minutes of the game.

There's no talk about the upcoming game from our Calvin posters.  Could it be that the loss to Albion has made our friends from River City forget that there is another game tomorrow?  Kalamazoo is coming to town, and I'm sure the Hornets will be looking for revenge.  Wednesday night's win in Angola was a big one...and by a big margin.  They were able to hold the Thunder to only 48 pts--same as Calvin did at home, and 20 pts less than when Calvin played at Tri-State.  The Hornets are also the only team to break 90 pts against Albion this year.  If I had to pick an upset game for tomorrow, it would be Kzoo over Calvin.
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

Not a bad upset pick ES...all depends on how the Knights respond to the heartbreaking loss. The game is fairly meaningless in the standings and for MIAA seeding, and Hope looms on Wed, so there is potential for looking past the Hornets.  As the NY Giants proved in Week 17, though, champions come to play even in "meaningless" regular season games, and that mentality pays off big time.  I hope KVS can focus the troops.

If I had to go with an upset, I might take Adrian over Albion.  But I'm sick like that. :P

Albion won by 9 last time, in almost the same circumstances, coming off a big win over Calvin.  They were able to regroup in 1 extra day to this time, and had the Dogs down 16 with 11 minutes to go.  But Adrian rallied to pull within 4 with 2:30 to play before Albion was finally able to put the game away.

Given that TSU beat Olivet by 4 the first time and are coming off a pounding at the hands of a team that was on an 8 game losing streak.  Olivet over TSU would not surprise.  Olivet has to play up to the level of their abilities eventually.

HCG:  Not so sure about that adversity thing.  The person who pointed out the 92 loss is a CCIW regular, and was tugging on all your leg just abit.   :)

Actually, the person who pointed out the '92 loss is a North Park alumnus, and he was tugging on all your legs a lot. ;) :D

By the way, I'm still trying to figure out what Corey Feldman had to do with that game-winning shot at Albion last night. Did I simply miss the explanation?

At the end of the clip, there was a kid jumping around with the fans and team, wearing a hat like the one Mr. Feldman is wearing in the photo NWHF posted, and wearing black clothing.  Somehow that must have reminded NWHF of the star of Goonies, The lost Boys, etc.  Why did he make this connection, you might ask?  Well, maybe this could help understand the mind of my good friend NWHF (and my mind in the process).  We once had part of a conversation go something like this:

NWHF:  Who sings this song?
ES:  Ummm...  Was just on Letterman...wore a big hat...sang with Sinead O'Conner...
NWHF:  Van Morrison!!!
ES:  YES!

Or something like that.  Visually stimulated memory.

Ah, OK. Thanks, ES.

Quote from: HopeConvert on February 15, 2008, 11:07:49 AMI'm also willing to bet that, over the course of his career, Michael Jordan missed more game winning shots than he made, even if I couldn't get a Cavs or a Jazz (or a Hoyas) fan to think such a thought.

Perhaps some of you remember this Michael Jordan voiceover from one of his Nike commercials:

QuoteI've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

I'm not saying that this is the only time that KVS has been "outcoached" if indeed he was, and I have definitely had my disagreements with KVS's coaching style, but you surprise me with this one Realist. I didn't think Turner got the best of KVS that often in terms of coaching. Turner is a very, very good coach, but this statement seems to imply that he is somehow on a different level than Vande Streek. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

In any case, I support KVS's decision, it just wasn't executed very well at all by the players. You don't play for the steal, you stay in between Mocini and the basket. They can have the ball as long as they want, just make it hard to shoot. Nobody really did that in my watching of the replays. I'd like to say congrats to Mocini though, as that's a tough shot and he didn't just make it, he nailed it. Also, it must've been pretty cool to be a DIII player on Sportscenter's Top 10 (wish I would've seen it there, even though my Alma Mater lost).

Better yet, you could ask Civic Minded to check our math.  Civ is doing better than both of us.    ???

Civ is doing better because she ardently keeps riding the Tri-State pony.  That is, she was doing better, until said pony let her down last night!   ;)

Hope thats not the TSU pony Civicminded's been riding all year.

OMG! This is twice in one season that I have totally agreed with Stinger!! It's a first! HOPEfully Coach P will also notice this! But I couldn't agree more with the tribute to Al Deal. He served the MIAA so competently well over many years. You couldn't find a more classy gentleman who gave more to build the image of the MIAA during his years as Commissioner. Up until the last year he took in many a MIAA sporting event. And I just know that he'll have a lifetime of eternity doing what he loves, watching sports!  Thanks Stinger for brining this to our attention and Thanks Al for the memories.

GoVols

;D So, the story goes that, a couple of weeks before his death, knowing he was dying, Deal told his wife to make sure that when he died his funeral should not be on a Wednesday or Saturday so as not to disrupt the MIAA basketball schedule. The service is scheduled for Sunday.
Surprised?
I'm not.
I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.

yes that is to bad he passed a way he was a great guy way to bad
