Picket Fence

Might you Knight fans being hoping a certain PG from Calvin Christian decides that he doesn't want to sit behind a D1 player at Hope? The kid from Calvin Christian will play if he goes to Hope.  The ones that would be worried would be the ones that are destined to be 10-15th men for any time they spend on varsity anyway.  Calvin can have all of those guys that they want.

I believe Van Solkema will play before next Saturday's Albion game.  Hare being
hurt would open up a roster spot without having to demote someone to JV.
I think GVW and his 8 assistants would like DVS to have some playing time before playing Albion.

I agree, this is kind of what I was getting at, I think if DVS is going to play for Hope this year he has to get some pt before the Albion game.  If he doesn't than I think we're back where we thought we were 3 weeks ago when he transfered.

At a Hoops luncheon Glenn would only say that VanSolkema is in practice to help the team get better, to get used to playing with them, and to begin to enjoy playing again, which apparently he wasn't.  When asked if we would see him play, coach said that he likes the team the way it is.  He wouldn't commit one way or the other.

I'm inclined to believe this is the answer we're looking for.

I heard Artest is still waffling between the Kings and the Dutch.  Its always
been his dream to wear the anchor.

That would be appropriate because an anchor is exactly what he has been for the Pacers.

NICE!  8)

Beyond the current players, you have to wonder what this does to Hope's ability to recruit the next generation.  Rather than always looking over your shoulder for a D1 transfer, might you decide to try another school?

Its not an issue for me nor should it be for any recruit.  The past 8 months has been a complete anomoly regarding transfers to Hope.  Like I've said before I really wouldn't expect Hope to have another transfer this summer.

It's not difficult to believe that the kids on the bench have some mixed sentiments :-X :-\ :'( ::) ??? :o :( >:( about the prospect of VanSolkema soaking up some PT. It's a nice problem for GVW, but it also carries with it some potential for frustrated players who aren't getting many, or any, minutes other than garbage time.

Well, I saw the Alma game and those guys played like garbage....they know it, the coaches know it and their teamates know it.

Veltema will play if he goes to Calvin too--and get more PT if he does. And he won't play much point at either school--especially if he goes to Calvin where I think Veldhouse and Smith have that position locked up for a while. Veltema is very versatile and he could play any of 3 positions if he goes to Calvin.

Veltema would wipe the floor with Smith.  KVS would probably move Veltema or Veldhouse to the 2, since you guys are losing both Trewella and Drayer, and with nothing within the program to replace them.

At Hope, Veltema would probably be eased into the point guard spot.  VanSolkema and Patridge are more 2's than 1's and Immink is leaving at 8 years at Hope.

You're right that Veltema is a better player than Smith but Veltema won't be playing point in college (other than to offer a change of pace or spell another player) for either of two reasons. Firstly, Veltema is not really a point guard at the college level. He can play it effectively in high school but would be less effective at that position if he played it regularly in college. Secondly, and probably more importantly, he would be wasted at point in college. He will be a tough matchup in college at the 2 because of his size and he also can play the 3 quite easily because he is silky smooth, has a quick release, little wasted motion in his movements and is good without the ball. Simply put Matt is a scorer and a good college coach won't waste him by having him play a lot of point.

Veldhouse won't ever move to  the 2.

I agree... KVS won't do that unless someone better than veldhouse ends up at Calvin... *knocks on wood*

I wouldnt be surprised to see Veldhouse at the 2 for stretches but not as his primary position.  It all depends on what comes in/develops to replace Draayer and Trewhella.

I don't think Caleb will ever be 'moved' to the 2.  He seems to be more of a distributor/score with the ball type of player.  I dont think that he is able to run around without the ball and create a shot off the ball like a player such as Trewhella.

Just a quick mention, Ralph Turner just added an MIAA Discussion board for baseball....please check it out....hopefully we can have some good discussions!

Thanks.  Plus everyone enjoy this weekend's exciting MIAA Basketball action!

Caleb is a pretty versatile player and I think he would be as effective a player at the 2 as at the point. That doesn't mean he will play a lot of 2 guard because I think whether he does play the 2 depends on Streek's opinion of 1) whether he thinks he has an  alternative at the point, and 2) whether he thinks he has a capable replacement for Trewhella. Maybe I'm goofy but Dustin Smith intrigues me as a possible starter at the point position. I know he stills makes mistakes that must be eliminated if he expects to be a regular at that position but he's got some skills. He's quick, strong, and a good defender with the hard nosed attitude of the football player he once was--something nice to have in a point guard. He's also a pretty good shooter and if he learns the right mix of when to shoot vs. when to distribute (as did Chauncy Billups) he will be a real asset. VandeStreek noted the other night that some people don't know that Smith is the all time leading scorer in Hamilton history. That's pretty impressive when you consider that Hope has gotten a couple of pretty good BB players from that school.  On the other hand Caleb at point and Veltema at 2 would be a dynamite combo for years to come. Come on Matt, make the right decision.

Hope worried about recruiting? Whew, thanks for the laugh, mrsw.  Dont get me wrong, I sure as hell want these young kids to open their eyes and ears and realize they wont play (or start as GVW will tell them).  Maybe then Glen can try to get by on his coaching and not talent alone.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Go Baby Knights, Adrian, and Kzoo!  I guess Olivet too, can't root against Ludacris in a neutral game.
