Derek Griffin - 1st Half - three 3's and three consecutive point of his finger  at the Dew Crew

Derek Griiffin - 2nd half - zero 3's and ZERO pointing of his finger at the Dew Crew.

You are ZERO class Griffin and good riddance!!!!!!!!

If a recognizable group of fans singles out a player, can they really gripe if the player singles them out in return?

I found your post to be ZERO class.

Are you saying that Griffin was being singled out?

You got me, Erm - I wasn't there.  But as a graduating senior, knowing it might well be his last rivalry game (or even last ANY game), I'll cut him some slack.  (Unlike section7.)

Several comments about Derek Griffin.

He has a history of taunting.  At last year's tournament I was sitting behind the Tri-State fans when Calvin was playing Tri-State in the semi-finals.  Griffin was burning the nets, and after he made his three's he would come by the Tri-State fan section and yell something to the crowd, although I could not make it out.

Last night the refs had enough after another verbal taunt, and they stopped the game to give him a warning, and presumedly a T if it reoccured.  He just rolled his eyeballs and smiled.

Tonight he shot and made three treys in the first half, and pointed to the Dew Crew each time.  He also did the same after at least one other shot.  The second half comes, then Griffin cools off.  What goes around, comes around.  When he started to miss his treys (before he finally left with a 3 for 11 performance from behind the arc), the Dew Crew starts to point at Griffin.  Van Wiren eventually sees it, and motions to them to put their hands down and stop the pointing.

I know much was made of Van Solkema talking to the Calvin fans earlier this season, but DVS looked like a choir boy compared to Griffin's antics.  I like to see a player let his performance do the talking.

It reminds me of the famous quote attributed to former Cowbows coach Tom Landry, who when asked what he thought of players celebrating a touchdown in the endzone, replied, "I never want my player to act like it's the first time he has been there."

Having said the above, Derek was an incredible performer for the past two years, a money player that you wanted to give the ball to in a clutch situation.  Hope fans will not forget his performance in last year's tournament.

At least Griffin can back it up when he talks. DVS just sucks.

DVS 3-0
Derek Griffin 0-3

Derek Griffin - .....................

Derek Griffin 2nd game at Hope this year, how many points .............0

Derek Griffin 2nd Half last night ................ very few points and many terrible forced shots.

Next week.........DVS playing, Derek Griffin not!

Looks to me like DVS wins on all accounts.  Keep backing it up!

While I appreciate many of the last few pages of postings, I have certainly had enough of the negative Hope AND Calvin banter.  Both teams played very well during the MIAA tournament, and fans from both schools should be proud of their teams.  Do we really need to continue the negative postings?

Best wishes to Hope for the upcoming NCAA tournaments.

Interesting you mention having experienced as a student watching our Hope in multiple losses to Calvin.  With all due respect, my friend, you were spared that "way back when" i.e. should have seen it when Veenstra was playing against us! ;D ;) ::)  Seriously, though, the Hope-Calvin rivalry is great - a great experience for everyone from players to fans to coaches, etc.

Relax already!  Let's remember Griffin for his two great years as a Knight who hit a memorable shot against Hope last year, and was the Knights' tourney MVP this year averaging ~25 ppg in the three games of the MIAA tourney and carrying the underachieving Calvin team to within ~20 min of a NCAA berth.  I wish him the best in his future as the sole senior leaving this team.

And I don't see any reason for Hope fans to waste another minute taking personal jabs at Calvin players.  I'm sorry if a players' personal antics in the heat of competition offended you, but last I checked our season is over and yours is still very much alive and you've got a lot to look forward to in the weeks to come.      While I admit that I enjoy the 2-0 edge in rings, I have to say that there is no school/coach/fans/players in D3 that deserve it more than Hope.  Enjoy the ride and thanks for representing the MIAA well this year.  I hope you guys can find a way to Salem.

GO HOPE!

Wow, sounds like it was a tense game based on sac's write up. Almost best I wasn't around to witness Hope drop 13 behind but they must have turned it around incredibly to end up winning by 16.

Sense some bitterness in the few posts I have time to read based on fan behavior. I'd say fans should be careful but its ok to have a little fun as long as it doesn't cross the line and going after an individual player does not cross the line just because it focuses on one person. Rogaine sounds hilarious.

Here's looking forward to a good first weekend pod for both Hope teams!

Hong Kong is pulling for you, I asked everyone here loves Hope.

We all know that fans can often cross the line.  But without doing so (swearing, ethnic slurs, etc.) the brunt of the ribbing/trash-talking will be directed at the opposition's best player.  Also, I would hope that players don't take student sections seriously (I know the refs don't).  Students most often substitute emotion for tact and common sense.  Tonight (and also past games) Derek Griffin decided that it was alright to not only taunt a student section after every made basket in the first half, but also throw a middle finger their direction.  Tyler Zoerhof also flashed a middle finger at the Dew Crew.  While totally classless by the players, I find it appalling that Kevin VandeStreek let this go on.  I would hope that in the future the MIAA is not represented by a coach that allows such behavior, failing to teach two of the kids under his control some character.  (Believe me, Griffin's does not need to taunt, he has more than enough game).  Derek Griffin, Tyler Zoerhof, and Kevin VandeStreek, represent your school with more integrity next time.

Does a player acting "classless" make the coach classless as well?

I honestly didn't know everyone here had this much beef with Derek Griffin.  I guess everyone wanted to wait till his Calvin career was over to rip him on here.

btw, I didn't really get the "CC drop-out" chant.  A community college is a two year college, which it looks like the Dew Crew didn't know.  Not complaining about it being "classless,"  more so I  was just a little confused by it.

I can't ever remember seeing the losing team linger on the court/field for a championship trophy presentation....are they supposed to?  Either way, can someone explain why Hope posters have more comments about how much they hate Calvin than they do about their own (#1 ranked?) team going to the NCAA tourney?    Ridiculous.

I'm looking forward to the tourney field being finalized tomorrow so we can start talking about basketball again.

Well, you can't use the transitive property, but it tells you a lot about a coach who will allow it.

The CC dropout chant is funny BECAUSE it's untrue.  Just like DVS may have a little receding hairline, the rogaine chant was funny.  If he was actually balding, the chant would have been out of place.  Honestly, do you really think anyone was seriously questioning Griffin's mental capabilities?

I can't even imagine how embarrassed Griffin's mom was at his choice of actions.  Conversely, CalvinChelseaMom, if you read this you can take pride that your son John conducts himself with respect and sportsmanship on the floor.

On a happier note, how about an outside chance at a first-round bye, or a more likely first and second rounds at DeVos?

Come on, hope1.  You have more class than that.  I honestly don't remember in recent years past where most of the Albion, Adrian, Calvin, or Hope fans have stayed for the whole award ceremony thing.

edit: alright, maybe I was wrong.  Over the years, whether Calvin wins or loses in the tourney final, I can't say I pay much attention to what the fans of the losing team does.  Hope1, maybe you're just more observant  than I am each year  ;)
