It was a big recruiting day for UM, and later as we were down at field level inside the big construction site inspecting the troops (better, but not there yet), a number of recruits walked by, football, baseball, basketball.  No hockey that I could see, but then its probably a wise idea to avoid 85 degree days with Canadians.  One recruit caught my eye and that was Colin Voss of East Grand Rapids who was there on a visit for basketball I assume.  Interesting to say the least.

So that was what I can only assume would be my one and only encounter with John Beilein.

Voss was there as a football unofficial visitor (ie, free tickets but no red carpet treatment...UM does this for 30-50 HS juniors for pretty much every football game).  He's a decent TE (or possibly OL) prospect and is on UM's radar.

Saturday the bro and I were in Ann Arbor as early as we've ever been for a football game.

Calvin unveils new Knights logo. Follow the link for other new graphics.

Pretty sharp and aggressive for a staid Calvinist institution. + k to Gary Lepsch, the designer.

On a basketball note, I was surprised and pleased to be informed that Brad Schnyders is enrolled at Knollcrest this fall. He was the other bookend forward at Unity Christian two years ago along with Nate Sytsma. Brad played at Grand Rapids Community College last year. He stands 6'4", is a good all around athlete, and has excellent offensive skills. His has nice inside post scoring ability and shoots well from the perimeter too. How big a role he plays depends on how hard he is willing to work on defense. If he commits to the defense that college ball requires he could be a surprise player in the MIAA because the kid knows how to put the ball in the hoop in a variety of ways.

I did...  First good one I've seen from him.

Another version.

I'd like to see the horse logo in color.  Looks like Calvin's put together something great for their new floor.

So there is a need for two arches, the black line for the women's game and the orange line for the men.

Call me colorblind ... but that looks blue to me ... any others?

Well, if you think the outer line is blue - you are definitely color blind  :)

The inner line looks blue because of the reflection of the lights, but it is actually black.  You can see that if you look at the photo of the guy taping the floor, right where the 3 point line meets the baseline.

Bumped into an extended family member of the Nickerson family over the weekend and looks like Alma might be getting Caleb Nickerson from Kingsley and LSSU.  He went to LSSU for one year (might've been only one semster) but didn't play much if at all and then took last year off.  Word is he is going to Alma to play and a Facebook listing seems to confirm this.  Should be a decent guard in the MIAA if head is on straight.

Any more info on who Calvin has on campus now that classes have started and is construction on schedule for the gym?

Vice President of administration, Henry DeVries, said about a week ago that construction is right on schedule.

It may  be quiet in the DeVoss, but preparations for the season have been anything but since school started! Open gyms and  PE conditioniong classes have been getting the men in shape for what will prove to be a very competitive tryout with all the returning talent, incoming freshman, and transfers.

I have not had the opportunity to any open gyms at Hope but am anxiously awaiting the start of things.  A couple of things I have heard from others recently... there are legitimately 25 kids who COULD make the varsity team and play this year.  Really deep, ending up several kids watching from the stands that could be significant contributors at other schools.  Even with 6 open spots due to graduation, there could be 1-2 other new faces replacing last year roster spots.  Kelvin Carter has been playing well, looking more confident and aggressive, Bunn is going to have a big impact on the MIAA, Freshman Nate King, I believe?, has been impressive and Ross at times, and  Tanis is playing/shooting very well.  Jorin Scott is definitely athletic but a work in progress to say the least.  Will he be a soph or jr?  Many of the guys seemed to have lived in the weight room this summer looking noticibly stronger.  Also, there is a recent Mona Shores grad on campus who I believe is an 07 grad, can't remember his name, but he is a kid I was quite impressed with in hs ( better than the highly regarded Heneveld at the time) 6'5-6'6ish.

This is all through word of mouth.  I cringe at the thought of having to watch pick up games in the pre-preseason to get my fix.  I can hold out until the start of official practices.

I am curious to hear what other schools will be bringing to the table.  early indications were that Olivet was bringing in some serious talent from the lakeshore.

I have heard through other sources that Tony Roof from Mona Shores is attending Hope.  If this is who you are referring to, that would be a good thing.  Big kid, hits the boards hard, and (like every big man recently) has a good outside shot.
