Oh, man.  Don't get me started on THAT one!  Who's hair-brained idea was it to sell season tickets to 3/4 of the Holland population?  Now you've got grandmaw and grandpaw with a 20-seat block while the families of players have trouble finding a seat.  Grandmaw and Grandpaw invite the family/friends du jour to the game, who don't give a rip about Hope basketball.  So they sit and talk about grocery shopping and the latest book they've read and which grandchild learned to use the toilet at the top of their unintelligent lungs while *some* of us are trying to follow the game.  Sheesh!    >:(   (You'd think they could at least discuss the ketchup and mustard!)   :P

Season ticketholders may guarantee revenue, but 1/2 of the time the seats sit there empty or are occupied by people with no interest in the game at all, while others who really care can't get in.  (Okay, its an exaggeration, but you get the point.)  If only they had asked me...   ::)

That's just not a Hope College problem.  The same thing happens at Crisler Arena for U of M games.  Granted, the team hasn't been much to cheer for recently, but I am amazed at how many empty seats and gray-hairs (read: season ticket holders) there are in the lower bowl while the real fans sit in the upper bowl.

A couple of years ago, when U of M made the NIT run and hosted 3 games, the atmosphere was totally different when they opened up all the seats to the general public.  It was a much better crowd and much louder in there when the general public and more of the true fans could buy tickets.

It's nice to know that the reason that d3hoops/hoopsville will not be able to be present at the game tomorrow because old ladies need to talk about their shopping lists....

For the DeVos, why doesn't it make sense to sell season tickets to the Holland population. I am sure there isn't a large number of people coming from around the state to see every game for the orange and blue. Each player probably gets 4 comps for their families anyway, get to the gym early, I am sure you could catch a good tan for a Saturday game if you get by that large window ;)

If I am correct Albion College sells 100% of their season tickets to the Albion community. You should see how long the waiting list is for those season tickets. It rivals the list for Green Bay Packers season tickets.

KresgeKrazy,
Good to see you back in action.

Just got off the phone with Peter Gammons, he mentioned some rumor about the Boston Red Sox trading a great pitcher/slugger to the New York Yankees for some cash. I can't fully remember the player's name, but it soulded like a candy bar, I don't think it was Butterfinger. Apparently the Red Sox owner needs some cash to invest in a new play on Broadway.

Yaz, the point was NOT that the tickets are sold to the Holland community.  Duh.  The point is that the percentage of season tickets vs. general admission tickets is skewed/screwed/just plain wrong.  And there is an issue with players' families -- the new area of general admission behind the bench is too small, especially when both men's and women's games are played on the same night.

But don't worry, there won't be many tickets for you either!   ;)

Season tickets=Guaranteed money in ticket sales
General admission=Possible money in ticket sales

The comment was made earlier about the attendance at DeVos and not every game filling the massive arena to capacity. Because a college is a big business using the disguise of education, why wouldn't they want as much guaranteed money as possible? This small problem hasn't kept you or other fans from attending games has it?

I already scalped my ticket for the Albion game at the DeVos. Somehow I think I got the bad end of the deal. At the time season tickets for the Detroit Lions sounded great, but when I started to tell KresgeKrazy what a great deal I got and how excited I was to see Barry Sanders in action he just started to laugh. I give him a lot of credit for having the strenght to tell me Barry Sanders retired at the end of the season.

Yes, actually, it has. Quite a few people in the last few pages of posts have said that they can't get into big games because there are not enough tickets go GA or students.

I recall getting up at 6:00 am to go sit in line for tickets to the Calvin games.  Do you still have to do that?  I believe it was only the Calvin games and MIAA tournament games though.  Even rivalries like K-zoo it was easy to get GA tickets at the door.

I believe tickets were free.  Do students have to pay for tickets now?  I am 90% sure I didn't pay for regular season games.

I attended the Olivet game on Wednesday and I had a reserve ticket.  I sat next to some gray haired folk.  I had to curtail some of my comments to the officials and Gerald Dozie after he fouled out.  It would be fun to sit with the rowdy crowd again!

We used to camp the night before for tickets, but recently they prohibit all of that by having the tickets go on sale in the evening.

Students still do not have to pay for any tickets, just show up with a school ID and you're ok.

Why point fingers at the students as if they're the only ones who more often come out for the important games anyway? Unless I'm mistaken, the stands for the games against Olivet or Alma aren't packed to the gills in every other section while the diminished Dew Crew sits in their empty space. The entire Hope crowd in all sections shows up in greater numbers for the real big games.

#3 the best times i've ever had at any games (hope hoops, cubs in chi-town, spartan football) were with my friends/family

gotta love the critics who don't bother to sit in the student section.

Excellent point.   ;)  Must be a reason he's not sitting there...like he was thrown out?  The Dew Crew (in my humble opinion) is a pretty classy group, compared to many.  I'm guessing this winner just didn't fit in, and now he's sad... :'(

I'm going to take a guess, but he might not be sitting there because of the ME FIRST attitude that a lot of the front row guys have.  It looks like it takes some of them longer to get ready than the players playing in the game.  The front row guys don't even cheer; they just stand there and try to make witty insults at the opposing team.  The Dew Crew is not for every Hope student.

That being said, Brent has become the unquestioned leader of that student section and it's performing at a level close to the Spanky days.  His energy and the way he starts cheers will help in whatever way a student section can help a team, especially this Saturday.

BTW - I think with the players, the Albion game is a bigger game than the Calvin game these days.
Don't get caught watching the paint dry.

a.  You didn't read my post very carefully either time, did you?
b.  I have season tickets.  I am not a grey hair.  I am passionate about Hope College basketball, and so I cough up the big bucks to make sure I have a seat for every game.
c.  Go ahead and try to argue what you will, you are still missing the point.
d.  have a nice day.

#1 true, but it has its drawbacks.  I have season tickets; I just don't like the way some "fans" handle theirs.

#2 They can talk about whatever they want.  It's still rude to do so at the top of their idiotic lungs right in my ear, and then get peeved when they are politely asked to watch the volume.

#3 Agreed.  My argument is not with friends and family.  Its with rude behavior.  Period.

Most of the "bluehairs" (not so much gray) I've encountered at Knollcrest, the Civic and Devos are just the type of old people who do nothing but complain. No cheering. No doing the wave. No getting out of the seat until the end of the game. But they do complain about the refs when calls go against the home team.

These are the same type of people who tip $0.19 after their Slim Jem at Russ' because it "...was a good wage" in their day.

Carl Yastrzemski

Bulldogalum already alluded to the fact Albion Gradutates aren't too high on the reading achievement list. Maybe that is why I am having a hard time figuring out your posts? As always I will have a great day.

Oh yeah if somebody who was sitting next to me told me to quiet down while I was at a game I wouldn't take to kindly to that either. I also feel the same way for the fans that sit in or around the student sections and yell at the students to sit down.

I imagine on www.d3bigmoneydonors.com the "greyhairs" are talking about some diehard fan that tells them to rudely take it down a notch at the top of his/her idiotic lungs at basketball games.

Has anyone seen the brand new DeVos Live Cam on www.mlive.com. It has a live camera showing the court 24 hours a day. I wanted to watch the Brits shoot around before the game. No joke, I saw Mike Bailey on Evan Way's shoulders with a tape measure. Guess Coach Turner was pulling a trick right from the book of Coach Dale.

Hope 65 Albion 59...That's my prediction. Which gives us a total point spread of 124 points. Win or lose (I don't care who you have) does anybody have any different ideas of a total point score for both teams?

Today is a BIG ONE and I am so excited!!! I am getting read to leavae my house right now to go get tickets. I better be able to egt a ticket. I have to see this game. The radio wont cut it today. So, some thoughts on the game. Thsi might sound crazy, But I believe Scotty Richardson will have a huge impact on teh game today. The last time Hope played Albon, Scott was recovering from something and barely played. He is playing more now and I believe he can help to handle Crawford.  I am sure that that sounds like a crazy statement, but I believe it. Scott is so fundamental and he does things right. I believe he can do it. Immink is also playing well and he will stop Bailey today and that will be the difference. I cant wait.
