Krombeen left the floor twice with injuries, Carter was not able to return to the floor after his, Warren has a cut on his head, etc., etc.

This makes me wonder if I heard Coach Dav correctly.  Would it be Krombeen or Warren who needs stitches after their mid-court collision?

---Do not have a bad night broadcasting...........ever,  you must be Jim Nantz and Billy Packer at every moment, there is no getting around this.

I realize that some of our local broadcasters have had a bad night or two, but please, please, do not replace them with Billy Packer, or Bill Walton...

It could be both.  It was a nasty collision that took both players out of the game, although Warren was able to just walk off the court.  He was waiting to return at the scorers table when the game ended.  Krombeen on the other hand was face down on the court for a minute or two, was half carried off the court by his teammates, but was able to make it through the handshake line at the end of the game.

Unfortunately, I was unable to listen to the game last night but my reaction is 95 points from Judson?!? I know Hope scored more but that's a whole lot of points for a Hope team to give up.

Apparently the Holland Sentinel thinks Calvin played Rochester College last night. Here's the link that mentions it twice--once in the headline and once in the body of the article. Even making allowances for the fact that it's the Sentinel, this kind of ignorance is astonishing.

Hey, give them a break. Both names start with 'Roc'. Even the fourth letters are kinda similar looking. Who reads past the fourth letter of a word, anyw?

Calvin and Hope get two big wins apiece against questionable opponents. Just how good are, say, Rockford and Judson?

Rockford has been fairly consistent, with a DK Power Rating of about -2, which would be above average in the MIAA, so that's a strong result for Calvin.

Judson has been inconsistent -- some strong games and some weak games. My guess would be that they are talented but undisciplined. In any case, they look maybe a point stronger than Rockford on average, according to that most reliable of sources, the DK Power Ratings. So that's also a strong result for Hope.

Good point. Makes me feel better when my age causes me to mistakenly put on my resume' that I'm a graduate of Caltech.

On the plus side, the Sentinel does seem to know that Defiance College is located in Ohio.

I'm not sure what to make of Judson as an opponent. They had some talented players on that team, but were not deep. But for a brief respite in the second half when the coach did a wholescale substitution, the starters were out there for the entire game. They attacked the rim with gusto and according to my observations rarely waited more than 7 seconds to take a shot. As a result, both teams had a lot of possessions. I don't know if that's undisciplined, but it's the kind of system that will lead to a lot of high-scoring games. When you combined how hard those kids played, how little substituting they did, and the curious case of the missing whistles, you end up with an incredibly rough and ragged game. The last ten minutes were brutal - in about every meaning of that word. Hope's bench was looking like Atlanta after the battle in Gone With the Wind.

Assuming the injuries are superficial, I think it was a good win for Hope because it helped their shooting in a frenetic game situation. At this point, I don't know what to make of the team defensively. I have my concerns about their rotations and some of their one-one-one defenders. We'll see.

I beg to differ on your begging to differ.  ;D

Is that a double differ?

Well then, I triple dog differ!   8) ;) :D

But I do hear ya on some concerns about individual player's defense.  I have seen progress here too since November, and am hopeful that this trend will continue.

Some notes from last night's game:

* First of all what a special pleasure it was to have Russ DeVette in the house last evening. Though he has been through some serious health issues and surgery recently, that was a special moment last evening when he entered the floor after the game to present the awards to the Tournament Team players as well as to the winning team. He is a special man and I'm glad that a moment was taken after the game to recognize his years of service to this sport. Thanks Coach DeVette!

*  Someone made a note recently on this site about David Krombeen being a keeper, and someone else agreed with that thought, though the person had some difficulties with the spelling of a word in his description of agreeing with the original author, but as pointed out earlier, we're not suppose to make comments about spelling or grammatical errors, but I too (two?!!) couldn't agree more!  And what a tough player he is. He's like the toy I had years ago, the Rock em, Sock em Robots.  Just knock him down (litterally) (twice in fact!) and he gets right back up. He may even get me to believe in, (gulp, sitting down now!) the bounce pass!!   :)  He was also the player that put Hope at the 100 mark!

*  Did anyone notice that one of the "Stripes" was wearing one of his Christmas presents? Yep! He got glasses from Santa. Didn't matter though, they didn't help!  HOLY UGLINESS!!  Someone commented near where I was seated with 7:12 left in the game, that this is going to be the longest seven minutes ever.  I was waiting for stretchers and paramedics to run on the floor after a few of the mishaps. So here's hoping that everyone one is now safe and sound.  It was Street ball NOT at its finest.  Maybe the Stripes guy should just continue with his old style of being blind!  :)

*  Kudos to a certain fan for coming to the game even though they had their wisdom teeth removed earlier that day!!  Now that's a trooper! And major snaps for your status as a Hope Fan!  Hang in there MM!

*  Congrats to MVP Jesse Reimink and Tournament Team Player Zach Osburn.  Nice job to both players.

Now that I no longer live in Holland, I don't read the Sentinel, but last night I went to read what they had to say about the tournament.  I skimmed through the blogs and one of the titles caught my eye "Hope loss give Aquinas sweep of MIAA".

Now I know there was a rumor that Olivet was leaving the MIAA, but it takes literally 5 maybe 10 seconds to check a teams schedule.  Perhaps another 15 seconds to scan through it and comprehend.........maybe 30 minutes at the Sentinel.  Olivet is still in the MIAA and they beat Aquinas 68-67.  ::)

I now read the Lansing State Journal (aka Michigan State propoganda machine), on Christmas Day this week the Journal decided to cut paper use and now combines sections, they stuck the sports page on the back of their "Local/State" section.  This means after 30+ years of reading a newspaper correctly, I now have a backwards sports section.  So at least you just have to endure backwards sportwriting.
