Is Judson good?

Well, the coach seemed to think so.....he said something like "Judson is a very, very, very, very good team."

Four very's seems alot for a now 9-8 team.  They did go 19-9 last season and made the first round of the NAIA II tournament.  So maybe they're good.

However in my lack of desire to do much information searching on the 3 RDV tournament teams it was missed that Judson does have an NAIA All-American in DeWayne Robinson.  http://naia.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl-div2/spec-rel/031808aak.html

Pedja Lazic was 3rd team, John Lierman was an HM, from Aquinas.

Unfortunately, I was unable to listen to the game last night but my reaction is 95 points from Judson?!? I know Hope scored more but that's a whole lot of points for a Hope team to give up.

I wouldn't worry about the 95 points givin up.  Judson has scored more than 85 points in 11 games this year.  They just play at a high tempo.  Hope hasn't faced too many programs like that the last few seasons.

You'll have to forgive me, I stopped at the "first" Batman movie with Nicholson.  If the reference is from the first one, well its been almost 20 years.

The reference is actually from the '60s television show. You know ... Adam West? Burt Ward? POW! BAM! KABLAM! Ring a bell?

Man, nothing like dating yourself with an ancient pop culture reference on the last day of the year.

Two things about this sentence bother me.  The bolded part needs no further explanation as to why, and the underlined part just makes me feel old.   :'(

Holy nostalgia, GS!  Don't forget BIFF! and ZAP!   ;)

And do you remember the Bat-Computer?  It was a monstrosity bigger than your mom's Frigidaire.  (Remember those?)  And we thought that was high-tech at the time.   :o  My how times have changed.

I've got a real simple solution to the lack of great radio announcers - go to the game   ;) :D ;D

Great advice, FDF.  I go as often as I can.

Unfortunately, some of us have spouses that just don't appreciate d3hoops as much as some others.  Some of us have family commitments that take us in directions other than d3hoops.  Some of us must spend $25 (or more) for gas, and drive 6 hours (or more in winter weather) to get to DeVos as often as possible, and some others in the Holland area need only drive a few minutes.  Sometimes some of us are watching future Dutchmen, or their opponents, instead of getting to DeVos.  So as I said earlier, I'm very appreciative of the opportunity to catch the broadcast, and some of the excitement of Flying Dutchmen basketball.

any Hope fans concerned about the game at Olivet?
1. The fact that it will be the first conference game in a new gym ( a very nice one I might add) is concerning. will their community/student body be present to get things crazy? The facility is quite small so it won't take much.

2. Hope has not won a road game yet.

3.  Multiple inside threats for the Comets = potential foul trouble.  Vennema must show that he's ready to play with the big boys.  Andy will be a big key to this team's success the remainder of the season.

4. Athletic ability similar to Judson, maybe even more as a team.  We saw what problems that can pose the other day.

5.  Will Hope be able to sustain great shooting?

6. Krombeen (concussion), Carter (knee), Bosch (??) able to play/go at full strength?  Did anyone else notice that Bowser limped off the floor with 11 minutes left and didn't return, I think???

Going to go out on a limb by saying that MIAA teams would be foolish to allow Reimink to catch and shoot, period.  Whether its stepping out after screening or whatever.  teams will force others to beat them, which will happen but it may take a game or 2.  Jesse does not look comfortable putting the ball on the floor and rarely takes it to the glass.  Just an observation....

Albion/Adrian will speak volumes as to what each will bring to the table.  Is Adrian improved?  Will Albion be a contender or a spoiler for someone down the line?

I would consider a Hope win at Olivet to be a big win.  For many of the reasons/concerns you describe.

But a loss is not the end of the world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This season has the makings of a tough grind.  Unless someone gets hot, this should be a 3 or 4 team race right to the final 2 weekends of the season.   Hope, Albion, Calvin and Olivet have really done nothing to distinguish themselves from anyone else.  Adrian is probably capable of beating all 4, but I just can't see such a thin team winning the regular season, tournament maybe.

The schedule sets up for Calvin to be in good shape heading into Hope/Calvin I if they can get past the nemesis game at Adrian.  Beginning that night in MIAA game 3, Calvin faces at Adrian, at Hope, Olivet and at Albion.  That is Calvin's tough stretch of the season.    Get by that and the finish sets up nicely, with 3 of those same 4 at home the second time around.

Hope starts off pretty tough, at Olivet, Albion, at Kalamazoo, Calvin.  Ordinarily I might say the Kzoo game would be an easy win(they never are), but being that its AT Kzoo and sandwiched between Albion and Calvin (like I always love)  that has the makings of a tight under the collar evening.  Hope's going to close the final two weeks of the season with 3 of 4 on the road.

Albion has a similarly tough start to Hope's, but I think their toughest or most important stretch will start later with a home game vs Calvin.  A stretch that will include Calvin, at Alma(remember they went to OT there last year), at Adrian, Hope, Olivet.  Not only a tough stretch but an important one with 3 critical home games.  And like Hope they finish with 3 of their last 4 on the road.

Olivet actually has a fairly balanced schedule, none of the top 3 other contenders on back to back games, just a tough stretch begining at Calvin, which goes at Calvin, Alma, at Adrian, at Hope, Trine, at Albion.   Right in the middle they play at Adrian and at Hope, we should know by then if they're contenders.   They do finish with 3 of 4 at home, so if they're in position at the end, they've got a schedule they can finish strong with.

I'm not totally discounting Adrian, but I do think they're a step behind the other 4, but rest assured these to will be tough games.  Adrian gets a difficult stretch right in the middle of the season with Hope, Olivet, Albion at Kzoo, at Calvin.  Maybe a very important one given 3 home games in a row.  If it comes down to it, thats a tough close at Hope and at Olivet if they need a couple wins.

I don't think Kzoo, Trine or Alma are contenders, but with the teams all being so close in ability I can't discount that any or all of these road games will be tough.  There are degrees of tough of course but somewhere along the way one of the 5 favorite will lose a game or two to these three and that will simply be disastrous to their title hopes.

Just a brutal finish for Kzoo, at Hope, at Olivet, Albion, at Trine, Calvin

Not sure why Trine has 5 road games to start the first rotation, but this also means they get 5 home games to finish, if Trine improves the last half of the year, they could ruin someone chances.  Really tough stretch beginning with a game at Albion.  It goes at Albion, Adrian, at Kzoo, at Hope, Calvin, at Olivet.  That will make or break their season for sure.

The reality is, all of Alma's games will be tough for them.  They showed an ability to be much more competitive last year than I would have thought.  This year will probably be the same.  For sure they'll be gunning to get a signature win they can build off.

This  feels like a season where its a slug it out grind to the end.   It really isn't that hard to envision a season where a couple teams tie at 10-4 or 11-3.  It also really isn't that hard to envision someone putting it together and winning 13 or 14 games, I just don't think that will happen.

It really will come down to protecting home court, and trying to get 4 or 5 road wins and also avoiding the dreaded loss to the non-contender.    With such a balanced league every game really will be tough and important in a relative sense.  This is not the 2004 MIAA campaign, but sure could end up being just as exciting.  http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/0304/CONFSKED.HTM

How ever the regular season plays out, this one is really all about the conference tournament and being the lone MIAA representative in the NCAA tournament.  I have no favorite from here going forward.   I have an idea of how things might play out but there just seems to be too many unknowns that the non-conference schedule didn't clear up for me.

Its going to be interesting (as always) for sure.

It is good to see Andy Vennema decided to keep playing for Hope.  2 weeks ago he wasn't sure he wanted to play anymore.  GVW gave Andy two days off to decide if he wanted to be part of the team.  With Snikkers gone, Vennema and Nelis will need to step it up.
