The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Dew Crew
Good:Big turnout.
Bad: Inconsistant participation.
Ugly: Some of the attire. Towels tied together, football shoulder pads and bike helmets need not apply.

Officiating
Good: Lots of good calls on small stuff in the lane (which favors the big men on offense).
Bad: Lots of  poor calls small stuff on the perimeter.
Ugly: Anyone that drove to the hoop, with the exception of a few wide open layups, probably got fouled.

The Game
Good: Both big men were fun to watch.
Bad: Some of the big contributors on both teams didn't show up.
Ugly: Missed shots in the first half.

Play of the game: Voisin's two-hand slam over Crawford.

Who was that for hope? The stats looked good for the team...

It's 51-35 at the half at the Merillat Center.
AFter Adrian scored the first six points of the game, Calvin twice ran out to an 18-point lead in the first half, only to see the Bulldogs cut significantly into the margin.
It sounds as if the defense is, shall we say, spotty?

Crawford not scoring for a 12 minute stretch = Scott Richardson.  He did an awesome job today, and has really been playing to his full potential lately -- much fun to watch.

Others may disagree, but I tip my hat to VanderHeide as well.  He made some key plays at critical times that may not show up as stats, but he brought the spark that got the Dutchmen rolling in the first half.  And Wolfe added both points and some effective defense today, which helped move things along.

As someone mentioned earlier, the play of the game was Voisin's two-handed jam over Crawford.  I almost couldn't look -- I was sure Crawford was going to get a hand in, or that someone was going to get hurt.  But V held on and there wasn't anything Crawford could do -- a Kodak moment, for sure.

And the DeVos was rockin'!  I even had a player mention to me how loud it got in there today.  Good to know that it can have an effect when needed.

I think I'll savor this one for a day or two, then its time to get geared up for Calvin...   :P

I would go further - that has got to be the best power move I have seen in years.  Voisin takes the ball at the FT line, and goes right at the basket.  Crawford steps up and goes to block the shot.  Voisin just keeps going up and then jams it two handed onto Crawfords head.  The place went absolutely nuts!!!

I also agree that Richardson's defense against Crawford was great, but so was Voisin's.  Hope showed once again that they have a second, third, and maybe fourth gear for defense.  They also showed that you have to stop the entire team to shut them down - great balance and a really deep team.

Loved the Dew Crew and the wave and the entire place loud.  Even the Briton Backers in black garbage bags (I think) and the guy with the orange beak were great.  New attendance record for the DeVos 3593.

On to Wednesday - Go HOPE!

Final from Adrian:
Calvin 90
Adrian 69

The Knights blew it wide open early in the second half, running out to a 30-plus point margin in the first few minutes of the half.

Very strong performances from freshman Micah Chappell (15  points) and seniors Andy Draayer (21 points) and Kyle Trewhella (17 points).

Calvin shot 59 percent from the field and 65 percent from behind the arc.

A really outstanding tuneup for a big game on Wednesday.

Correction to my earlier post:

Scott was huge in stopping Crawford but he didn't do it alone.  There was just tremendous teamwork today, and it was really premature of me to credit any one person.  Each time I think of a person to give credit to, two others will come to mind, so I'll just leave it as being tremendous teamwork.  Jager must have given them one heck of a pep talk.  Way to go Dutchmen

that schould move the regional rankings around a little with witt and albion going down today
i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

Thats a two loss week for Albion.  Record-wise Calvin and Albion are starting to look pretty indistinguishable from a tournament selection perspective.

We'll see how much they move... I'd guess Woosters goes to #1, Lawrence goes to #2, Witt goes #3 and Hope stays where they are.

For all of those who missed it, there is a little pic of it on Hope's athletics website.
