ephoop:  Glad you stopped by the MIAA board.  Yes the new Van Noord is a great facility.  Just like the De Vos that Hope opened several years ago.  As you probably read a 3rd coference school Olivet also opened a new fieldhouse this season.
I will attempt to answer some of your questions.  The Van Noord arena which is pictured is the 5,000 seat, multi use facility.  It is designed to have 2 full size, regulation courts for practice.  It also features a 3rd regulation size floor that is covered by pull out bleachers for games.  The floor of the old fieldhouse was kept, giving 4 full size playing floors for all teams to practice.  They are also utilized this way for classes.  The balance of the old fieldhouse is being converted over to office, health center, and classroom space.  The old swimming pool which was attached to the old fieldhouse was torn down, and a new 50 meter pool built.  A thrid 100,000 sq ft. building was added as an indoor track and soceer facility.  Weight rooms, locker rooms etc. were all added.  The entire complex came in at something just over 50 million.  Calvin currently has a 150 million fund raising drive underway.  Like most coilleges it relies heavily on some deep pocketed donors, and the college is blessed in that many of it's alums have done well, and remember the college with donations.  I do not recall hearing any mention of using federal funds, and doubt that the state or local governments were tapped in any meaningful or significat way.  I know there were issues with water drainage, some streets, etc., so governmental units were involved in the permit process, but doubt any gave funds for the buildings.  Over the years average attendance has varied, but Hope, Calvin and IL Wes. seem to have come in as the top 3 for awhile now.  I

Thanks for the response.

Best of luck to Calvin for the rest of the season.

I hope to get out to Michigan one day for a Calvin / Hope game.  As a former hoop player at Williams, my fondest memories of college were our two games against our arch rivals from Amherst.  Williams / Amherst  and Calvin / Hope are unquestionably the two best rivalries in D3.

The atmosphere in the old Lasell Gym at Williams as well as the newer Chandler gymnasium is fantastic for the annual game against Amherst.  The old Lasell gym had poor lighting and an elevated running track around the perimeter of the court.  You needed to be careful not to hit the track if you were shooting a jumper from the deep baseline.  The gym held about 1,000 people in a standing-room-only situation where the track would be lined 5-6 deep with fans, hanging over the railing and screeming at the Amherst coach and players.  The fire marshall had to turn fans away from the game each year.  A very intimidating, but fun, home court advantage for the Ephs.

Amherst visits Williams this Saturday.  Williams new head coach this year is Mike Maker (Dave Paulsen, a two-time NABC coach of the year, left to coach at D-1 Bucknell); it's his first game coaching against Amherst.  Maker was an asst at Dartmouth for several years and spent two years with John Beilein as an asst at West Virginia -- he speaks very highly of his experience with Beilein ( who's doing a great job getting the UM program back on track in Ann Arbor).

A little spark of controversy for tommorrows Hope/Albion game.

Jesse Reimink needs just 14 points for 1,000 in his career.  So if you wouldn't mind please give Jesse a nice standing ovation for me when the moment comes.

The controversy will be that according to the miaa.org stat archives he has 986 points.  According to hope.edu archives he has 938.

I'm going with MIAA.org.

......and its Jesse's 100th game as a Dutchmen.

Quote from: sac on January 08, 2009, 03:56:49 PMThe MIAA is getting a nice collection of facilities but I'll say it again there are plenty of good facilities out there in D3.   Wheaton, Carthage, Wooster, Wittenberg, Capital, UW-Stevens Point, all places I've been beat anything the MIAA has except DeVos and VanNoord.  I've never been to IWU or Chicago's new place but I've heard they are very nice.

IWU's Shirk Center is now in its 15th season, which is very hard for me to believe.  It's a great place to catch a big CCIW game and it's been a really important addition to campus for IWU students.  I can't tell you how much this beats the old place, Fred Young Fieldhouse.  A few photos...

The Shirk Center's main basketball arena is not anything close to those at Hope and Calvin, but it's still a very nice place with a great atmosphere.

While I can't speak for everyone, I think the majority of us Hope fans certainly enjoy a nice little place with great atmosphere too :)

Miss you Civic Center!

When Kevin Koeman was playing at Trinity and he "came home" for a game with Hope at the old barn, I remember him making a comment in the paper, something to the effect of "this place smells like basketball." I think all of us hoops fans know what he meant by that. What a great home-court advantage that was!!!
I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.

Wasn't there talk earlier this year on the board that Hope and Calvin would have video webcasting of games this year? Was that just wishful thinking on my part?

No road trip to Holland today. It's like SWOWING cats and dogs out there!  Years ago my motto was the same as the Postal Service, but now that I have arrived at that *special* age, the thing between the ears has kicked in and says, STAY HOME!!  I was hoping that I would read on Hope's webpage that Albion couldn't get there and then I wouldn't have felt as bad, but, Mother Nature wins out today!  Back to shoveling!

HOPEfully live stats, etc., will work today!

Safe travels to everyone!

CHN:  I am not sure about Hope, but I know Calvin has talked about being able to webcast games.  I sort of assumed  ??? it would happen when the Van Noord opened up, but like the big screens it didn't happen.  Like Ziggy, I recall very specifically when touring the Van Noord this past fall the use of the word replays in the same sentence as the words big screens, and webcasts.  I know Calvin has hired an expert to get the campus "up to date" state of the art technologically so can only assume like most things it takes some time. :)

Mantel out early with ankle.  Not what Calvin needed inside.
Calvin up 32-22 at half.  Calvin rebound advantage  31-15,  but not doing well shooting fouls 10 of 18
Adrian up by 1 on Kalamazoo at the half.  Hope 40 27 at the half.  Olivet by 2 at Trine.

I was thinking of this earlier.........

When was the last time brothers opposed each other on an MIAA court?

David Bunn -- Albion, Peter Bunn -- Hope, played against each other today.  I can only recall two brothers playing on opposite teams,  the Thwaites at Calvin and Kzoo but not at the same time.

Anyone have an idea?
