If Massey uses anything that includes an opponents-opponents schedule you're then including alot of D2 programs from the Ferris game, and alot of D1 programs from Kzoo's game with Western..............which then affects all of the MIAA strength of schedule.

I think the numbers would come down alot actually for all MIAA teams.

1 game vs Ferris is at leat 1/15 of Calvin's total schedule............and Ferris is ranked just behind Hope in the total ranking, meaning Calvin is getting credit for basically playing another Hope strength game.  Take that away and Calvin's #'s drop as does the rest of the MIAA.

Massey computes strength of schedule and home court advantage after computing team power ratings, so the strength of schedule figures don't affect the power ratings directly.

This is a MOV-based ranking, so you have to take into account how the result came out. Calvin lost at Ferris St. by 12 I believe, and Ferris St. is ranked similarly to Hope. That means the Ferris game is pulling down Calvin's ratings a little (and with it the rest of the MIAA, but an even smaller amount).

But if Calvin did 10 points or so worse than expected against Ferris St, and the game was some time ago and therefore weighted less, that's probably only a half point or so that Calvin's power would go up if the game were removed.

Massey computes strength of schedule and home court advantage figures after computing power ratings, so strength of schedule figures would not directly impact power.

I suppose that makes sense.

I must say I'm looking forward to the renewal of the longest series between Hope and any other team, with the game tonight against Alma.  This series began in 1911, and especially of late, has been very lopsided in Hope's favor.  I expect that will continue tonight, and yet I'm looking forward to seeing the first Scots team to win back-to-back MIAA games since the 04-05 season.

I toured through Calvin's new facilities today for the first time. I like that the VanNoord required no big blue tarp, and thought it was generally very nice. I would like to see it with people in it. It seemed to me if you got into those upper corners you would be a distance from the action (for a D3 game, at least). I liked the lobby with the climbing wall. The track and tennis center was a neat facility. That will certainly be a boon to a lot of the athletic teams. I went through the area where the old gym was, and where they are taking it apart now. Quite different from my student days when I used to play intramural ball back there. I found myself wondering whether it might have been more cost-effective to just tear that down. I was very impressed with the pool area, especially how bright it is compared with the Dow.

I went through Kenyon's new facility last summer, and they're hard to compare. Kenyon's is much more open and lays out in a straight line. Calvin's has twists and turns you have to navigate your way around, so I found it more difficult to get a sense of the overall size.

I can't imagine any reason why the NCAA wouldn't want to hold its D3 Final Four at Calvin. Accessible to a large airport, plenty of clean, safe hotels and lots of restaurants nearby, and a large facility for their games.

I always think of billiards trick shot magic champ Mike Massey when the Massey rankings are discussed.  In my mind the guy is a master with the cue and does DIII basketball rankings in his spare time.

That's a lot more interesting than the rather mundane truth, which is that Ken Massey is a professor of mathematics at Carson-Newman University, a small Baptist liberal arts college (NCAA D2) in Tennessee.

One interesting thing about Prof. Massey that sac has shared with us over on CCIW Chat, however, is that he has a strange attachment to cartoon bananas.

Didn't Salem fix a lot of thinks up recently to make it nicer?  I'm sure Hope fans can answer this since they were there last March, and especially if they were also there in 1998.

I always thought it would be cool to have the final four at the Van Andel.  I think about 8 years ago, Van Andel pushed hard to host the Big Ten women's championship games there, and they tried it out one year, but they decided not to make an annual thing.

In recent years, new seats, new floor, new scoreboard, new backboards. Replaced the '60s style foam acoustical tile on the baseline walls.

Hope  40  Alma 25 halftime

Alma led 7-6 then Hope went on a 21-2 run or something like that.  Hope scored 30 in the first 11 minutes then struggled to score the last 9 minutes and still ended over 55% from the floor.
