One Mississippi, Two Mississippi...

GVW traveled over to Rogers High School last night to watch Zeeland East play.
That's twice in 6 days he's been there to watch Van Dussen and the boys.

FDF, this is an interesting exercise. As you say, they provide some type of indicator, but I think they miss a lot of things, too. For example, (and I'll use John since I know his stats best), John's points per game average is "accurate," but they did count a game in which he played 20 seconds. Second, John might not be in the top ten for free throw percentage, but he did make the two free throws to put Calvin on top of Hope, and though he shot miserably during a lot of the Albion game, he did make the last 5 or 7 straight to keep Calvin in the lead. I'm sure other guys have similar situations. I doubt if the all-conference teams in the past have lined up very well with a purely statistical ranking.

I figured I'd lose karma for this post, but it's important for folks to state opinions. And everyone has been doing so rather politely.

The shaky ceasefire could be severely tested Feb. 11.

Everybody else probably knows this, but where did that really good player from Trine go and why?

Apparently someone--knowing that John actually played a full 24 seconds against Alma, not the mere 20 you mention--was unhappy with your post. ;) ::)

Tony Benford transferred to Bethel where he is being redshirted this year. I don't know why he left Trine.

I don't see Veldhouse's name on the list.

I think he was trying to be subtle.

Straight from the stat sheets itself..........

To be ranked, a player must appear in at least 75.0% of their team's games

Veldhouse = 5 of 7 games =  71.4%

Paging George Mitchell, please;  George Mitchell please report to the MIAA board.

Thanks, Sac. That makes sense and helps explain Caleb's absence in the stats.

So where would he be if he were ranked?  I would do the math myself, but I don't want to.

At first glance, I don't think he would be top 10 in any category.  It looks like he would be 15 in scoring right in front of Dustin

Reviewing conference statistics from time to time is worthwhile for MIAA observers. In doing so, several things stand out. I'll highlight three.

1) Contrary to popular opinion, reports on how poorly Calvin defends (particularly from beyond the arc) are wildly exaggerated. The Knights lead the conference in team field goal defense and are third in defending against the 3 ball (they limit opponents to .289 from beyond the are while the Knights are hitting at .383 clip themselves to lead that statistic).

2) Calvin hammers opponents on the boards. They lead the conference by grabbing an average of 12.9 more per game than conference opponents. Olivet is a distant second at + 4.6.

3) Jesse Reimink is not only leading the conference in scoring at 23.3, he's third in field goal percentage at .529.  Before this season I mentioned that while Jesse would certainly score more points than last season, his shooting percentage would go down. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong about that. With every conference opponent knowing Jessie is Hope's first option, and considering the number of threes he takes, count me as very impressed.

Jesse shot 42.7% in the MIAA games last season............and he wasn't being held, pushed, bumped, shoved, grappled, etc etc nearly as much.  Nor was he facing as much help defense, this year 2 to 3 players are coming at him almost every touch.

His soph season Jesse shot 60% in MIAA games.

The criteria for the Hope coach, going back to 1948, is:

1) You must make a committment to stay for at least 30 years, and stay longer than your predecessor.
2) You must keep the Hope Nation happy with a lot of MIAA championships, including more than your predecessor.
3) You must be a star player at Hope, being all-MIAA first team at least two years, if not MIAA MVP.
4) And a new criteria that began in 1977:  You must have a winning record vs. Calvin.
5) You must not win a National Championship
