Now, in all seriousness, can we have a BBall discussion,  question to ponder today:

What in the world has happened with Ty Tanis this year for the Flying Dutchmen?

Is it quickness, slow release, what????

Could he make a few big 3's tomorrow at the VanNoord to surprise the Knights or will Danny Cox get his minutes instead?

I seemed to notice a hitch in his shot through about the first 15 games, but it looks like he fixed it but he's still looking to get his confidence back. i haven't seen a lot of that shutdown defense Hope used him for in the last half of last year either.

I created a new board for those who wish to tear each other eyes out, maybe this way we can keep this board clear for some better discussion.

Ha!  Funny that there are no other posts, but 24 other views in the 28 minutes since SAC created the board.

Looking at the history of the rivalry it strikes me that seldom do the two regular league games play out the same way.  If that pattern holds true this year we may see a faster, and more offensively oriented game tomorrow than the one back on Jan. 17th.  Since that game I think Calvin has come a long way on fixing some of the problems that lead to lots of Hope lay ups, and the bulk of their points coming in the paint.  For Hope to do well they will need to knock down some 3's, and it wouldn't surprise me to seeing them come in bunches.  Calvin is a more balanced offensive team now, and if several of the receently injured get back to form Calvin will have plenty of fire power to match Hope's offensive display.  The bench play/scoring is going to prove critical for both teams.  In the end four factors should determine the outcome.   1.   Rebounding.  Both teams need to have good nights on the glass, and a wide margin spells doom for one team or the other.  2.  Turnovers.  Calvin has been very lucky that their turnovers haven't cost them more games so far this year.  Hope seems to have uncharacteristically had the same problem recently.   Third is the free throw shooting.  Hope has an advantage here, and Calvin must match them here or it becomes a long night.  Fourth is the bench play of both teams.  Calvin has had to give some guys minutes to cover injures etc., and this may well be the deciding factor.  If Calvin plays their normal sub pattern, and Hope counters by relying on the starters and timeouts etc. the "fatigue" that Sac mentioned seeing in last weeks Hope games may once again be a deciding factor.
Hope players will adjust well to the Van Noord.  So I eliminate that as a wild card factor.  How the refs. decide to call the game will have some impact on the outcome, and that is the biggest wild card if one team or another gets key players in early foul trouble it.

Sadly, every game I've seen this year has had an important player get in foul trouble early either from Hope or the opponent and the 2nd foul has generally been a weak call. :-\

Yea sorry, probably should have taken some ammo with me..............I could probably move some stuff if I could figure out how.

Somehow I missed this little nugget.  I don't know if if has been brought up here.

So I guess it really is the end for 'Cal' and his neck brace.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there will not be any TV timeouts tomorrow, with only the Saturday Calvin/Hope games being broadcast, not any Wednesday evening ones.  Or do they still broadcast locally in West. Mich.?  I'm located eslewhere in Michigan these days so not sure if there is still a Wednesday night local G.R. broadcast of the game.  TV timeouts make a big difference in the pace of games and thus how subs and benches must be utilized.

Section7, I believe you have asked some good questions and topic starters but occasionally went a bit to far when it doesn't help conversation, such as questioning CalvinChelseaMom's postings.  No harm intended and you'll see that I'm one of the least uptight here (i.e. see my post from last week concerning karma and the giveth and taketh away of it, I couldn't care less about it).  And FWIW, I date back pre-2000 Calvin National Championship.  Just because I don't post much doesn't mean I haven't been around.  Sometimes this board is all that keeps me in touch with the MIAA and Calvin once you move on from West. Mich. area.

Keep the intrigueing questions coming.  I think both the discussion of Veldhouse's and Tanis's dropoff and lack of growth respectively are quite interesting.

 2. is turnovers

I'd like to second the importance of Realist's second point: turnovers. I mention this based on the Sac's posting of Velhouse's, Zoerhof's, Smith's, and Remink's stats over the past 3 1/2 years, and what caught my attention was the large number of turnovers (in my opinion) of all three of Calvin's players compared to Remink's 14 turnovers. Granted, Remink saw limited action in one or two of the games, but I'm speculating that many of the 100+ turnovers of the three Calvin players over the past three years were caused by good Hope defense. A good Hope defense combined with sloppy play by the Knights could be a disaster for Calvin.

Someone asked about the game being televised; I'm 99% certain it will be televised with media time outs (I checked the WGVU web site and it's listed as being televised; plus last year's Wednesday game was televised).

Talked with WGVU (Channel 35) TV at lunch today.  The game (Hope vs Calvin) will air on regular WGVU TV on Wed night.  However, it will not air on WGVU - HDTV.

Couple things stood out:

"not a goofy thing like some other schools"... What are they trying to say here???  ;)

"We also wanted a knight with the helmet on; no face, so that we could keep it gender neutral."... A gender neutral knight? Huh?? Like the androgynous knights of the round table???

" We wanted it strong but not too ominous. " So more like a female shot putter...  :o

Just kidding!!! Glad to see an effort like this.

So are cheerleaders next?  ;) ;)

Yeah, got so excited with my fingers, hit the delete key and screwed it all up, my apologies.  It was between Typing and Calc III for that 8am time slot.  You can decide which one I took.

By the way, Standout, wonder if you remember Ashabi and Yaz from this board?  If not, I've been here alot longer than you..........................

Now if you could just figure out how to use that Kzoo education to quote correctly... 8)

I should have been more specific.  We "top quote" here, so that the comment being referenced shows up first, lending more understanding to the added comment.  FWIW.

I wouldn't take a personal read into it.  Maybe its just that I try to keep "Dutch" out of my mind, but I read that sentence and Dancing Trees, Otto the Syracuse Orange, and the Western Kentucky blob thing come to mind.
