With all that being said about lack of student participation among Calvin and other student sections in the MIAA (which I agree with most of what was said btw), I hear Calvin student section tickets have been sold out about a week and a half now.  A lot of students that went abroad for interim came back from their trip not being able to get a ticket.  I know a lot of students have been asking around all last week and this week to see if anyone has an extra ticket.  Usually in past years, they don't get sold out until a few days before the game.  Calvin students usually are loud for this game, but it seems their has been a pretty big buzz around campus about this game more than usual, with flyers all around campus about a "pre-game bash" inside the new tennis faculty at the new spoelhof complex.

One reason I bring this up is Hope has such a young team, and it seems the only 2 games they have played so far that had a legit opposing student section (Calvin and Albion) have been losses.  It will be interesting how it affects the newer players as they haven't faced as large as an opposing student section (or opposing crowd for that matter) all year.

I know this doesn't seem like a big deal, but sometimes opposing "noise levels" can affect young players more than some people think imo.

That being all said, I touched on it in my last post, but I am sure having one rivalry game under their belts for the young Dutchmen will help a lot.  They will probably come out more confident than the last Calvin/Hope game, but we'll see...

Do student sections really win games???   I think crowd noise etc. is one of the most overrated things in bball.....most players and coaches really dont notice it during a game....(unless your name is called and/or your mother insulted :)

Never said they do.  I sure think it helps, though.

I usually don't comment on crowd noise and such, but there seems to be a lot of talk about it on here the past week, so I'd thought I'd comment on it.

DK--  I've never looked into it before, I just noticed it looking at the league results yesterday.  Seemed a little unusual, but maybe not.

For the Hope Calvin series

2000  +8 Calvin won both
2001  +8 Calvin won both
2002  +12 Calvin won both
2003  +20  Calvin won first by 4, Hope won second by 16
2004  +10 Hope won both
2005   +15  Calvin won first 12, Hope won second by 3
2006   +19  Hope won first by 18, Calvin won second by 1
2007   +9   Hope won first by 3, Calvin won second by 6
2008   +14  Hope won both

If Hope wins tonight that makes 4 split regular season meetings in 6 years, which is very much against the norm as I recall since I was in school.

A long time ago I asked Hope's Kris Merritt if the crowd noise ever bothered him, and he said no.   However I've seen many games over the years where I would characterize a team losing their concentration in hostile environments collectively.

I believe a good home crowd can give a team a decided advantage.  Whether that wins a game or not is highly subjective of course, but I think it might make a team turn the ball over once or twice when normally they wouldn't, miss a FT here or there etc..........or more aptly put, make a team 'feel the pressure' during a key stretch of the game.

Enjoy your games tonight, wherever they may be.

Like Sac I can recall a number of games where either Hope or Calvin benefited from the home crowd.  Not all players are the same, and some are visibly affected by what is going on around them.  Others, and R Klingler comes to mind, almost seem to feed off or enjoy a hostile crowd environment.

Contrary to what some might think or say I would bet both GVW, and KVS, and their respective teams want home court advantage for the MIAA tournament.  A big part of that is your home floor, and second is home crowd advantage.

dumezrules:

If you've ever played in a collegiate game (and I assume you have), I think you would deep down honestly say the answer to that question is "yes".  I can tell you from my own personal collegiate experience that it does.  I am, not, however, suggesting that such result occurs all the time because it obviously does not (most recent example is the MSU/U of Mich baskeball game last evening).  Nonetheless, I'm sure that most of us who played in college (even though we are trained to and usually "drown out the crowd noise" via our determined concentration to take care of the business at hand, it does happen at times that the home crowd advantage of the opposing team can cause things to "go downhill very fast/distingrate".  Unfortunately, when that happens, it is a sick feeling such that you can't do anything about it despite you and your teammates best efforts.  Sometimes, it just goes that way.

Thus, that is my long-winded way of saying that, IMO, the home crowd can be a very major factor most times, although not always.

Anyway, I hope that tonight's Hope/Calvin game is the usual "barnburner" and may the best team win (I hope that is HOPE of course! ;D).

Good discussion/other comments on this topic from you other posters as well.

Sounds loud in there!

JR 0-4 from 3... sounds a bit like last game. Hope he picks it up!

I can't remember who said it but whoever expected Reimink to play obsessed seems to be right on so far!

Adrian gets a big win tonight, a much needed one.  I watched on livestats, and despite the fact that they suffered a bit of a slump at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, they pretty much controlled the game.  After a 4-0 start by Alma, Adrian went on a big run (maybe something like 22-1), and didn't miss a shot for the first 9 minutes of the game.  As for great performances, Adrian had 5 players in double digits, and had one of their better shooting nights, from a field goal percentage perspective, they've had in some time.  For Alma, Jordan Reditt had 29 points, and seemed to be the only reason that Alma was in the game.

How can there not be a report of a final score yet for Calvin vs. Hope?  Someone report in please, saw a score on miaa.org of C-63 H-62 but that doesn't have any more detail than that.

Sounds like the first game at the Noord was a barnburner.  Wasn't any chance to eat the Hudsonville icecream before that game was over.

Anyways, lets year some game reports and analysis.

Yesterday I felt there were 4 keys to tonights game.
Rebounds, dead even.
Turnovers, dead even
ft shooting.  Calvin gets to the line more, but makes game closer than it had to be with poor % (15 of 23), and Veldhouse 4-9.   Hope 4-7.  Calvin aggressively pushed the ball inside, and got some calls.
My fourth item was bench play.  Hope's starters all over 30 minutes Reimink with 39, and missed a 3 that had to break Sac's heart.
Yes, 63-62.

Missed the last 8.5 minutes of the game because I had to run my girls to AWANA...
Looked at the live stats... WOW! what a finish. Another classic!!!

SAC my friend... one of these day that shot will go down for you.

Well, hopefully we get one more shot at the knights.

Good night!

Quick recap.  Hope was up by 4 at the half.  Calvin managed to get up by 10 53-43, and than Hope makes a good run, pulls into the lead.  Veldhouse hits a big 3 to get it down to 1.  Reimink misses a 3, and Calvin goes down to score a deuce, and take the lead with 3.1 to go.  Hope misses desperation shot.  Calvin holds Reimink down to 4 points in 2nd half.  Mr. Bunn picks up the slack.
Calvin just can't deliver a knockout punch when they have a team down.

I will wait for others to report.  IMHO, and I may well be wrong, 39 minutes in a Calvin Hope game is just alot of playing time even for an iron man like Jesse.   :)
I did not expect Hope to go just 4 of 18 from 3.
