Knight In The Stan

I just got back in town and have a chance to post after reading everyone else talk about the Calvin/Hope game. Im pretty sick of people talking about that supposed flagrant foul...did anybody else see Hope's coaching staff practically run out to half court after the play?!?! That is an automatic technical regardless of the call and that wasnt made...

Careful, sac, I have it on good authority that Knight (no longer) In Iraq is disarmed, but still dangerous. :D

He made a good observation sac.  I'm not sure why you would react like this.  Do you not agree that the Hope bench could have been T'd up for going on the court?

Geez guys - relax a little.  sac's comment was surely directed at the bolded statement above - in which case he's absolutely correct.

No more so than the mascot deserving a 'T'.........in both cases the stripes used discresion.  They recognized the passions involved.

KII- I was going to post something about it right after the game.  I went to the NABC site about bench decorum and I thought it gave the officials some latitude to give a warning.  I thought GVW was given a warning and whether I agreed or not it was the officials judgement to do so.  I thought he was given another warning much later in the game when he was down on the baseline by Hope's bench arguing a call.  I was surprised the officials allowed Matt Neill to do as much bitching as he did because usually they only allow the HC to talk to the officials.  The previous game against Adrian, Buck Riley, was warned because the assistant yelled something at the ref.

I was going to let this all go because of my dislike for discontent and strife on the board.
But since you brought it up I feel compelled to contribute my 2 cents worth.

Yeah... way to go KII... just messing up our idyllic board! Darn you!!!

C'mon man--give him half a break.  If you react to every thing people say, the people trying to be nice will just stop posting, and the jerks that want to yank chains will know where yours is located.  At least some posters give deference to the people that make this board tick.  He said he just now had time to post.  Remember that some things we write may sound different in our head than what a person might read into it.  And after all, the guy is out there serving our country, and deserves a little deference as well.  Now back to basketball.

Hey all,

Great comments and the such but I want to switch gears a bit.  There is no chance at any Hope/Calvin coverage on my side of the state so I particularly appreciate what I can get through the Grand Rapids Press on mlive.  Perhaps those of you that live with the GR Press (or Holland Sentinel) as a constant feel differently, I don't know.  I just took a quick moment to email Brian Van Ochten and Howie Beardsley a message of appreciation for their coverage and I would encourage you to do the same.

hbeardsley@grpress.com
They experienced a great rivalry game last night, and I think it would be equally impressive for us to show some appreciation, especially since they probably get more "hate" mail than "fan" mail.
Just a thought, do with it as you will.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm harping on this, but I received responses from both writers within hours of my original email.  One even asked my permission to possible publish my email.  It is obvious that this kind of response makes an impression.  I encourage all MIAA posters show appreciation for those that cover our game.  If you won't do it for me, please, do it for JJ Jumper.

wow-didnt mean to stir it up that much, how about them cubbies! I guess if I were on the losing side of that game I would have been looking for something to get on the referee's about too. Lets not forget that Hope still has the All-time lead, and Caleb and the seniors there are still 4 games under .500 in their careers against the Dutch. I have seen every Calvin/Hope game the last 13 years or so and every one of them has been great, except when Holsteg(Loved to Hate that guy) and Mullenberg were there. I dont want people to think that since I am not there that I dont know what is going on in the MIAA. I have a great appreciation for this level of college ball and I only post things that I observe.

almcguirejr-Its been a long time, nice to know that youre still around and looking out for me. ps, the refs are not required to give the HC any warnings for stepping out of the coaching box.

Even if that's true, it's common practice to warn coaches before giving them a technical for something like that.  Yeah, there are coaches boxes for a reason, but sometimes, the practicalities of the situation sort of require a coach to get out on the floor a bit further.  I wasn't at the game on Wednesday, and I can't speak to that situation, but I can tell you I've seen many coaches out on the floor outside of the coach's box during games.  Just watch Izzo during any Michigan State game.

Here's a copy of the rule book.  Appendix III p144:

For the record I would have no problem with a technical foul being called in that situation.

Knight In The Stan

I stand corrected, a warning is to be issued.
