Were you in attendance at the Hope/Calvin game played at Van Andel which set the NCAA Div III attendance record of nearly 12,000 people at a single game?  While most of the Hope/Calvin games have been extremely high energy atmosphere for the students and other fans (even way back in my days at Hope - my memories are similar to yours for those contests both at Hope and at Calvin's old arenas), the contest at Van Andel was almost "unreal".  It was such a great experience for those people that it even made mention in Sports Illustrated as I recall.  MICHIGAN HISTORY magazine did a great piece on that as well, thanks to Hope's longtime great SID Tom Renner.  Anyway, despite both Calvin and Hope have a slightly "down" year as compared to their "steamroller" years when they have those, tonight's game will be a "blast" I'm sure.  I won't be able to attend it, yet hope all of you who do have a great time, and...of course, I hope HOPE wins! :D ;D ;)

Nope I was in Las Vegas at a George Carlin show of all things.  We had a plane to catch that night and I remember desperately trying to find a score at the sports book and the blank stare on the guys face when I asked him.

I finally called the "Hope sports report" hotline, while doing so my dad put $5 in a slot machine in the hallway of McCarron Airport and won $200......... and I had a very comfortable sleep on the redeye home.

Time has come again for my yearly post about how all is right with the world.  In these turbulent times, it is re-assuring to know that some things stay consistent. The down economy, the new presisdent, high unemployment, Marbury playing for the Celtics--what will the next year bring? Regardless what happens at the game tonight, I always feel more at ease knowing that it always seems to come down to Calvin and Hope.  Nothing against the other teams in the MIAA. they put up a valiant effort, but in the end, we all know that it will always come down to Calvin and Hope. The more things change, the more they stay the same.  Divided by a common heritage, the rivalry continues!

I respectfully disagree with that generalization about them being "down."  I look forward to either Hope or Calvin making a nice run in the tourney.

I would absolutely and respectfully agree with you that both teams and perhaps Calvin more so right now are "hitting their stride" for the tournament and upcoming playoffs.  I love my alma mater Hope, yet, at least right now I would have to admit that Calvin I believe is the better team - even though both Hope/Calvin games were close - at least Calvin (other than the Kazoo loss) seems to be playing a little better than Hope.

However, what I was referring to (and what everyone including myself in reality has to admit ;D) was the fact that neither team is the type of "steamrolling" powerhouse teams of the late 1980's and early-mid 1990's when they were smashing almost everyone including when Hope lost the two national championship games (of which they should have won at least one of those) nor like Calvin's two national championship teams.

I agree with you, though, that neither will be "down" for tonight's game!

Not quite the balanced scoring for Hope tonight, but Calvin certainly is spreading it around... Thank goodness the 3's are not hitting for the Knights, or this game would be a lot different!

For those not at the Hope/Calvin game tonight and unable to listen, here's a brief update at the half:

Hope 34     Calvin 32

Hope made a huge comeback coming from down 6 in the last two minutes of the half.  Hope is shooting better  than Calvin but Calvin is coming up big on the boards and free throw shooting is keeping them in it.  Hope is 4 for 5 from 3 point range and shooting 47% on 2 point shots.

Calvin is shooting 32% from 2 point range and a very poor 1-13 (7%) from three but are 11-13 on the free throw line.  Interesting differences in how this game is playing out.  Hope has to continue to play good defense and get more active on the boards or Calvin will run away with this because I can't see there shooting being this bad in the second half.

Have they voted for league MVP yet?  If not, it's Reimink's.

Following this rivalry for as long as I have, I don't think it is quite over yet!  Hope has got to stay focused and keep the foot on the pedal or Calvin will hit a couple of 3's and make it a game.  I hope I'm wrong but I won't ever count them out until time expires.

Good call - in the last three minutes Calvin has gone 9-0.

Here they come!  Get ready for another fantastic finish.
