It hurts that it works, doesn't it?  I mean, where are your National Championship banners?  Besides the women's teams banner?

I was thinking that if Calvin won last night, they were probably one and out.  I have the same thought about Hope.  One and done.

Seriously...you can call it a go-to, unoriginal, a cop out, but ultimately it is the TRUMP CARD IMO.
Let me ask you this, scottiedawg: Would you cash in a winning lotto ticket if you were given one?

Best of luck, flying dutchpersons

I honestly think it has 0% affect.  It's not like there is anyone currently attending Calvin who was part of either of those teams.  It's just something you can count on hearing at every single Hope-Calvin game.

Even Jon up there  ::) was in 8th grade in 2000. I'm sure he wasn't even thinking about Calvin College basketball then.

I do think Hope/Wooster is a possibility.

Fingers crossing... I just hope it's at a location that I can find a way to make it to.

You've got to be kidding!  I think your Orange and Blue spectacles are working overtime.  If you don't think that tradition plays any part in the appeal of both these teams, then I don't know what else to say.  Part of the tradition of success is that Calvin has made it all the way to the top (twice  ;) ).  As much as we have to suck it up that Hope has been ending Calvin's season year after year, you have to suck it up that we have won it all, and hold the trump card.  To say that none of the players on this team were on those teams is like saying that you should not take pride or even mention Hope's success this year, because you are not on the team.  It is all part of the fun!

These are good points, but ask yourself if the day comes when Hope can answer "here's our banner"..........will it affect you?, will it make you feel different about Calvin basketball?  I can't imagine it will.  Hope fans don't want a National Championship to put an end to student section cheer, it would just be an added bonus.

In the world of student section cheers the "where's your banner?" might be the trump card, I mean there really isn't an answer for it especially since so many really don't care, but it was trumped before when the Dew Crew "stole your banner" years ago..........you can only pull off such mischief once in awhile. ;)

Speaking of Tradition, the video played beforehand is well done,........if the same video were in Hope hands it would be the Hope arrogance and superiority again. :-\

I didn't exactly receive a flood of votes for the MIAA fan poll, it was one of the reasons I didn't do it last year.  Declining participation.  But here goes anyway.

2009 D3hoops.com MIAA Fan Poll

MVP

Jesse Reimink, Hope

ALL-MIAA FIRST TEAM
Jesse Reimink, Hope
Brandon McClary, Olivet
John Mantel, Calvin
Desmond Young, Adrian
Wes Weir, Trine
Peter Bunn, Hope

ALL-MIAA SECOND TEAM
Michael Staley, Adrian
Michael McClary, Olivet
Henry McCain, Kalamazoo
Caleb Veldhouse, Calvin
Matt Wayne, Adrian
Andrew Holms, Albion

Newcomer of the Year
Peter Bunn, Hope

Coach of the Year
Kevin VandeStreak, Calvin

Thanks to those who voted.

sac

The voting break down

MVP  (first place in parenthesis)
1. Jesse Reimink, Hope (9.5)--30.5pts
2. John Mantel, Calvin (1.5)--18.5
3. Brandon McClary, Olivet--12
4. Desmond Young, Adrian--2

It was pretty one sided, and I think I received more Calvin posters votes than Hope, not sure.

All-MIAA

Reimink, Mantel, B. McClary were unanimous.  Here's the points......

Reimink 33
McClary 33
Mantel  33
Young 31
Weir 26
Bunn 19

Staley 16
M. McClary 14
McCain 13
Veldhouse 12
Wayne 8
Holmes 7

Bunn was on all 11 ballots, Weir 10, for the second team Staley, McClary, McCain were on 10, Veldhouse 9.  The next two closest players to making second team were Jordan Redditt and Matt Veltema, neither received a first team vote.  All other second teamers received at least one first team vote.

Newcomer/Freshman I kind of screwed people up on this category maybe.  Bunn had 4.5 votes, Krombeen 4, Andre Evans 2, Michael Staley .5, and Joust 1

Coach, pretty undecided, wish we had more votes to decide this one but 4 different coaches received votes.  Can't remember that many before

KVS 4
Jody May 2.5
GVW 2.5
T. Smith 2

I suppose the response would be: "Where's your other one?"   ;D ;D
We'll have to ask my grandchildren when it happens!

Seriously--good luck in the Big Dance!  Show the MIAA proud.

Congrats to the Flying Dutchmen on a well deserved victory last night at the DeNord. Many posters have already touched on the highlights, but, ummmmm, ahhhhh, ummmmm, you know, ummmmm, I'll, you know, add a few more. First note is on Jesse Reimink and his 25 points. Another game where after looking at the scoresheet, you ask yourself "Where did those points come from?" I'm especially happy for him and his career at Hope. He's a special guy and a very talented player. Second, the jousters can call him all the names that they want to, but I'll take Will Bowser and his awesome rebounding abilities. Third, and the Most Improved over their Career award goes to Zach Osburn. After transferring to Hope as a D1 Football player, Zach has worked hard and really made an impact and difference to the Hope Team. Fourth, major accolades to Daniel Cox as he will be graduating from Hope in three years. He passion, drive, and never giving up attitude is often the spark that the team needs when he comes in to play. Fifth, after reviewing the stats, the Dutch really kept Veldhouse and Veltema in tow. Both players were kept well under their scoring average and I think this was one of the keys for the victory.Sixth, MAJOR KUDOS to the Dew Crew. A fine job of cheering and supporting your team, not only last night, but the entire season. Thanks also for your ability to live within the MIAA Fan Rules, a great example for ummmm, ahhhh, you know, ummmm, you know, others to take note. And lastly, I'm hoping that the Calvin pep band will be able to add the following song to their repertoire so that they can honor player #52 next season with his theme song - http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/lyrics/bunnyhop.htm  :)

Again, Congrats to the Dutchmen, and good luck Dancin!

Go Hope!

Unfortunately, winning doesn't always bring out the best in folks.

Congratulations to the Hope PLAYERS for being a class act. They played a tremendous game last night. Jesse is an outstanding player. I know they will represent the MIAA well.

Congratulations to Calvin on winning the regular season title. They struggled through a lot of adversity and came a long way. Hats off to our seniors--Caleb, Misha, Tim, Tyler, Mike and Dustin. Thanks to the Calvin fans who were gracious in their congratulations to Hope and represent Calvin well.

Any doubts about MVP?

Why did KVS call a timeout after Veltema's 3??  Seemed to get Hope settled down , they ran alot of time off the clock and then Bunn scored....I am usually a coach supporter but I thought at the time that was not a good decision....the younger Hope players were getting rattled.

Probably to set his defense. If I recall correctly Calvin went to the fullcourt press after that time-out. I can see the argument either way for calling or not calling a time out there. Calvin was still down 6, there was only two minutes left, and Hope had the ball. Calvin was still in a pretty precarious situation and needed to get the ball back. Hope ran off 22 seconds capped by a Bunn jumper, but only after they broke the press.

I have to admit I aproach this board with an uneasiness about whats been written after these games.  I was pleasantly surprised by the responses yesterday and today.

..at least from me, thanks.

I'm a long-time MIAA board "lurker" but this is my first time posting.

Having gone to Calvin basketball games for over 15 years (and having graduated from Calvin myself), you would be hard-pressed to find someone who enjoys Knights basketball more than I do.  And I congratulate Coach Vande Steek and the team on their great season.

However, I also feel compelled to say that there have been few instances where I have been more frustrated and embarrassed by the conduct of a portion of the Calvin student section than I was on Saturday night.  I hope their irresponsible behavior in no way detracted from the excitement of the night's events for Hope's players and fans.

That being said, good luck in the NCAA's, Hope.  And if you don't happen to win the national title this year don't worry, you can stop by and take a look at one of ours any day.   ;D
