Did anyone catch the interview with KVS after the game? I was suprised with his comments, and I want to see if anyone else on here noticed them...

KVS did about 4 interviews after the game. 3 for news stations and one for the radio.  Which one are you referring to?

I'll say it.........the non out of bounds call matterd little.  Hope gets the ball there they have like 2 maybe 3 on the shot clock.  I doubt they would have gotten a good look the way Calvin played D tonight.

Calvin still wins on a last second 3 from anywhere on the court.

Someday karma will change and Hope will win all the last second shot thrillers.

As a neutral observer, if there's a questionable play at the bitter end of a great game, it's better as a non-call.  I hate to see a great game come down to a call that the refs can't be certain of and the fans will never agree about.  I'd rather see the players decide it than the refs.

Now, many of you will recognize me as a Wooster fan, and some of you will immediately think back to last March in Kresge, but I'll say this: I wish the foul call at the end of Woo/Albion had not been made, and my feelings about that would not be different in the least if the roles had been reversed (i.e., foul on Alb. giving Woo a chance to win at the line).  It's just not how a great game should end IMHO.

Congratulations to Calvin on a great -- and in my view, completely non-tainted -- victory.

It's just difficult to watch something like that happen to your team.

TELL me about it!  :P :D

Don't get me wrong: the right call (or non-call) is always preferred.  But when there's significant doubt, I prefer to err on the side of the swallowed whistle.

Oops, forgot to post the stats if anyone is interested.

http://www.calvin.edu/sports/mbasket/stats/2005_06/cm22.htm

There's something fishy about those stats. They show Veldhouse and Meckes with 19 minutes of PT and Snoeyink with only 13. That isn't right is it?

I think so too.  Duff and Pearcy did not play for Calvin unless I was unconscious for a while.

I heard several and none stand out as surprising. Which ones?

For those hopeing the Knights handle the tough environment of a Hope/Calvin game better than before.........I think the same can be said for Hope.  Hope's one road trip to a hostile environment was Albion and they folded their tent fast.  So Hope has something to prove on the road as well.

.......The arguement about wheather a close game favors Calvin is a no brainer to me......of course it does.  Does anyone really think Calvin will win big over Hope?

There are lots of keys but the biggest is how the Knights shoot period.  Calvin almost always shoots well at home and if they're able to put pressure on Hope to score they can win.

Prophetic, no?

Calvin shoots 56% in the second half. Hope 35%

I think the call you are refering to is the play where Meckes went after a ball to save it from going out of bounds baseline on the Calvin defensive end.  I have a tape of the game and I watched it several times and it was not clearly out of bounds.  His left foot comes down and appears to be very much in bounds when he hits the ball backards just before his right foot comes down out of bounds.  Unless his toenail on his left foot was out i would say that that play was good.  I watched it several times and I am confident that the call on the floor was correct.

The Calvin Stats are all screwed up.  Katt, Pearcy, and Duff did not play.  Snoeyink played at least 25 minutes.  Calvin's defensive intensity was outstanding especially the second half.  I have to question GVW use of his
bench.  Vandestreek played 10 guys and Hope only played 7 any significant
minutes.  Partridge and Wolfe can play and they each only played 4-5 minutes.
Hope has big size advantage over Calvin but never tried to really attack Calvin's interior defense.

Kevin Vanderstreek has really done an outstanding job with this team.  He defines roles for each player and each one of them are doing what he is asking.  They have come a long way this year.

..........if you look up Hope's two losing boxscores and scroll to the bottom you will notice 3 names that appear on both.  They are not players or coaches.

I'm just sayin'  ;D

oops, I was sure these were the same 3, but there is one common name.   So now I know which one is Conlin

next time I see him I think I'll just pick up my coat and leave.

The interview on WGVU after the game... KVS talked about how he knew his team had to play at their max capacity tonight to win and they did so and he didn't think they could play better.

The entire interview KVS sounded as though he was generally suprised that they won. He didn't seem to be confident in his players ability even after the game was over. I'm not sure if it was shock or what, but I was very suprised to hear him talk like this. Overall, he gave the impression that they wouldn't really be able to play better than they did tonight.

It was really weird...

Great games all around the board tonight.

So was Dr. Conlin's crew that bad tonight.  I guess catch me up on this.  I'm reading, but want some more points of the game.  Dr. Conlin has worked several Big 10 games at MSU as a fill in.  I saw him last year work a MSU game for a half, because a official was stuck in traffic.  He has also worked the DI College World Series this past year I believe.  Saw him on ESPN every night.

Quick question...Lonny Fulse, Albion...where is he?

Bulldogs win at Olivet.  Might not be a big win...Olivet...hohum...but not many go into the snake pit and win.  Congrats to the boys!

Nokovich played well it sounds like....12 points, nine assists and five steals.

Gerald Dozie...this kid is like Stacey Augmon...the plastic man.  I liked him when the Comets visited AC.  First Team All-MIAA lock.  Where did he come from?  Don't remember him much from last year.

Hope comes down the the Drain to take out frustration on Saturday...ouch!  Who is making the trip?  For you who are coming you'll get a chance to see all kinds of dirt moving.  The stadium is making great progress.  The Merillat is also getting some color.  The new administration has added fancy logo's and new pads on the walls to jive it up.

Should've known it....Calvin in first!

Out like a fat kid in dodge ball.

On reflection, I assume you are talking about KVS's expressed willingness to play the last 10 seconds for a winner-take-all basket and his comment in the huddle to Veldhouse that he should hit the 3 "so we can go home" (as I best recollect it).  I wasn't surprised for 2 reasons. First, Calvin's chances at beating Hope were better with that strategy instead of trying to tie the game and then beat Hope in a 5 minute overtime. Second, as both KVS and any Calvin fan who has watched Veldhouse play this year knows, having the ball with a chance to win the game is exactly what Veldhouse wanted to do. He lives for that kind of moment and he isn't afraid of failure. Now everyone else knows it too.

Now that I have had time to read your followup post I guess the only surprise is that KVS said publicly what is true of all of us who follow Calvin/Hope--that Calvin won this game. I didn't see his comments as showing a lack of confidence in his team, just a recognition that Hope has a number of supremely talented players and was the clear favorite to win going in.

Interesting

So thats two MIAA coaches who have said following a win over Hope "I don't think we can play better"

KDawg---Fulse is hurt, seems he should be returning soon.  I heard a month ago he'd be out a month.

==officials tonight were actually good tonight, but it sure looked like they blew one.  Just frustrated at another last second defeat in GR.  Thats 4 I've seen.

The difference for Calvin in their final four year last year and their somewhat unexpected lead of the MIAA this year is that they dont lose to teams they shouldnt lose to.  Last year Calvin lost three league games, two to Albion and one at Hope by a combined 8 points.  This year their only conference loss is at Hope.  The couple years prior to the last two have seen Calvin struggle against some lesser opponents (loses to Adrian and Kzoo), particularly on the road.  It just goes to show you what can happen when you dont shoot yourself in the foot.

Shareef23

Just so you know alot of recruits in the house tonight for Calvin. Not going to name names, but this win doesn't hurt any. I've been to many Calvin games over the years and this ranks right up there with the best of them. There's just something about sticiking it to Hope and all the transfers with a team that was "supposed" to go nowhere that is extremely rewarding.
"I started to look around at the fans and the team and I was sitting in the back, and I looked around and everybody was having a good time and that day, it truly made me realize what Michigan was about. It took me down, it humbled me. It taught me how to be a Michigan man instead of Jason Avant."
