Have another mai tai tonight, OK.  There's reason to celebrate another outstanding recruit in the fold for Calvin. 8)
Aaron Meckes of Saginaw Valley Lutheran has turned down other suitors, including spurning $$ from D1 UW-Mad :o, to come to Calvin for his higher education and to continue his athletic career on the hardcourt and in track and field.
He follows older brothers Nate and Josh, who both were multiple sport athletes at Calvin.
Word is that Aaron is a significantly more polished offensive player than either of his older brothers -- and a nasty defender/shotblocker, which seems to be part of the Meckes DNA.  He's 6-5 or 6-6 and 235, and a great leaper with cat-like reflexes.
Family ties make this a good knight, indeed. ;)

Calvin 3- Meckes, powell, snuugereud
Hope? Albion? K-zoo?

I know nothing is official until deposits are put down but....
WM commitments have been few and far between thus far, D3, D2, NAIA

I haven't taken in as much hs ball as normal.  The horrendous officiating (in general) is a real turn-off.

I'm assuming that Colton Overway will go to Hope.  He's basically lived at Hope growing up. I know their was initial interest from Northwood but there is no way he plays "higher" than D3 and JV at that for at least a year.

Nelson from jenson to Hillsdale.

Vanderjagt and Vanpelt to davenport and spring arbor respectively. Bibler to GVSU football.
Heard the kid from Saugatuck is leaning NAIA

There have been sighting of 6'3-6'5 players from coops to calvin christian in the paper recently.  What else am I missing...

Lots of eastsiders ripe for the picking but I don't know much about them.

Unless you know something I don't, Nate Snuggerud from Zeeland East is not official -- at least not this week.
This was a good week for Calvin, and maybe next week will be even better.
One can always ho.... um, aspire. ;)

Snuggs from Zeeland East is leaning towards Cornerstone right now.  Will not make a final decision until they are done with the tournament.

Patience!

May I assume that you direct your remark at hoopdreams.  :-X

No just a general remark, we've barely made high school regional/quarterfinal week, alot of kids have other things on their mind.   I think it was mid-April before Hope's class came together last year.

A rough count in my head puts the number at 10 kids who have MIAA schools in mind that are still playing this week........and thats probably a low number.  Add to that a few others who's season's just ended this week.

...........but I agree with hoops, its been quiet on the commitment front for the small colleges........except for Spring Arbor.

Chris Bellamy- Novi
Matt Van Pelt - Rockford
Matt Carden - Fraser
Jake Wild - Hanover-Horton

Concordia (Ann Arbor)has 3 as well.

One can read into this however they want.  This is a qoute from the GR Press- Lakeshore this morning.

"We feel really good about the nucleus we have coming back.  Andy Venema and Chris Nelis could be ones to watch.  David Krombeen and Peter Bunn are really good.  We've got Will Bowser coming back (please don't be insulted will, you're good too).  I think some players have a really nice future for our Hope basketball program".

I know there have been whispers amongst Calvin fans about Tanis being done at Hope.  Did GVW let the cat out of the bag or simply doesn't see him as part of their returning nucleus, or was he misquoted?

SAC, I simply enjoy stirring the drink everyonce in a while.  With tourney action in full swing, and the weather taunting me and my clubs, MIAA recruiting is the WAY low on my list of interests.

Maybe not misquoted as much as typical pre-occupied and not at the forefront of his mind. I know the coaches really liked Tanis' defense during the last 1/2 of the season, and how he regained his shooting aggressiveness toward the final weeks. Almost as if it coincided with finally getting in hoops shape and dropping a few lbs that he had gained in the bulking up from last year.

He's in their plans as far as I know.  And should see significant playing time, especially if Van Dussen spurns the Dutch for a scholarship now that he's a Mr Basketball finalist (much discussion on Steve Bell's website).

Our old friends Grace Bible won the NCCAA Div 2 National Championship last night with a 74-72 win over Valley Forge Christian.  Allen Durham named MVP.

Grace Bible won games vs teams from 3 higher levels of competition this year, Ferris State-D2, Baldwin Wallace-D3, Davenport, UM-Dearborn and Purdue North Central-NAIA II.  The Tigers did not lose a game after the calender flipped to 2009.

Greatlakeshoops.com has 6-5 Brian Sheridan from New Lothrup heading to Adrian College.  Stephen Bell had him #30 on his pre-season power forwards list.  Since no All-State lists have been released accolades will have to wait.

If you're like me and wonder where the heck in Michigan New Lothrup is......its about 15 miles NW of Flint, near Flushing.

Hey--we have slipped in the poll about the best rivalry.  Duke UNC 54%    Calvin-Hope 26%.  Get in there and buff up those numbers.

hoopdreams:  Did you leave Jake Mantel off the list for a reason?
"If you are catching flack it means you are over the target".  Brietbart.

hoopdreams

nope.  With all the talk about ZE this weekend in GR, and snug's name repeatedly coming up, I simply forgot Mantel's commitment.

AQ has 3 transfers lined up for next season- Derek Brooks Northview06, Jamell Hatchett East Kentwood07 which I already knew about.  Ted Alberts, formerly of Cornerstone is one the way as well, supposedly. There will be a huge turnover of AQ athletes with all the redshirts they had.  Hammer has a one and done policy.  If you don't improve greatly your redshirt year or freshman year, you're done.  I cannot imagine Oostema, former teammate of schultze, will be aroung either.
