I've never been a huge supporter of polls and I really don't understand the reason for a poll after the national tournament.  Can anyone shed some light on why this is done, other than the fact that it is a tradition?  Thanks.

It's something to mull over and discuss.  Especially with the incredibly unbalanced brackets of the d3 tourney, where one bracket may contain most of the teams that most observers think are the best.  The tourney establishes who is best, but unless you consider the other 300+ teams to be equally 'losers', some of us take pride in who is #2, #7, etc., which is definitely NOT established in the d3 tourney (e.g., Richard Stockton was the national runner-up, but you would have to search far-and-wide to find anyone not affiliated with the school who thinks they were the second-best team in the country).

It has no ultimate purpose, but some of us enjoy it. ;D

I found it interesting watching the Duke/Texas game on Saturday, that the announcers noted that the many UNC fans in Greensboro Coliseum were rooting for Texas rather than their fellow ACC member Duke during the game.

The Dukie fans weren't all innocent either...   :-\

In the Carolina/LSU game prior to the Duke/Texas game in Greensboro, the Dukie fans were cheering their arses off for LSU.  So, can you really blame the Carolina fans for returning the favor and cheering their arses off for UT???  8)

Because it isn't truly a national tournament. It's four regional tournaments that each send winners to Salem, this year more than most.

That's the best explanation yet!

Thanks.

I'm long overdue on this post, but I still want to share it:

A quick look back at the careers of the four Hope seniors, Dan Cox, Brandon Bosch, Zach Osburn, and Jesse Reimink.

In the four years they were at Hope (3 for Cox and Osburn), the Hope varsity went 103-20.  That's a winning percentage of 0.858.  They won 2 conference championships,3 MIAA tournaments, and had a Hope/Calvin rivalry record of 10-5.  They went to the NCAA tournament all 4 years, with a record of 9-4.  These four also all end their Hope careers with Assist / TO ratios above 1, with a composite A/TO ratio of 1.19.  On an individual basis:

Dan Cox - graduating in 3 years, when it seems to take 5 years for most kids these days - very impressive!  2 years on JV, and just a year on varsity.  Dan always seemed to play with a lot of desire, and was never shy about going to the basket or putting up a shot.  Missed the final game of the season with an MCL injury. Averaged 5 points, 2 rebounds, 10 minutes in 22 games his senior year.  Had an Assist/TO of 1.86

Brandon Bosch - a guy who always left everything on the floor - and I mean on the floor.  This guy has to hold the record for floor burns and twisted ankles.  I always enjoyed seeing him come into a game with his extreme energy and foot speed and make an instant impact. In his 2 years on varsity he shot 56.4% from the floor, and had an assist/TO of 1.35

Zach Osburn - in my opinion, easily the most improved player at Hope each of the last 2 years.  Under-rated for his tough inside D (considering he was typically the smaller player), he also showed some really quick feet around the basket, as well as the ability to hit the mid-range jumper.  Is tied for 1st (with a large group of players) for games played in a season @ 32 in 07-08. Over his career, Zach shot 54.% from the floor, and would be in the Hope top 10 for that, had he made just 11 more shots.  Impressively (for a post player) ends his career with an assist/TO of 1.14.

Jesse Reimink - mister everything who started his career at a slow pace, but surely finished strong.  Four year varsity player that year-over-year improved in points, rebounds, and FT%.  More than any other player I can remember, Jesse's stat line game after game often amazed me - not so much in how he performed, but how "quietly" he did it.  Definitely the kind of player every fan wants on their team.  Ends his career with an assist/TO of 1.16.  Leaves the Hope record book dotted with his name, as he is in the season top 10 in ten categories, and career top 10 in eight categories (details below).

Call this today's random internet video of awesomeness.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZFYHE9NmZE&feature=related

Skip the first 20 seconds of some girl and her puppy........

Pay no attention to the awefull basketball, what I'm looking for is answers about the gym.  Is this gym affiliated with Kalamazoo College?  Is it infact Anderson before the renovation?

Pay close attention to some fuzzy details.......1) there's an obvious Hornet painted on one wall.  2)  Very clearly a Knight painted on another which looks exactly like Calvin's old logo.   3)  In one corner and hardly noticeable are two figures with a little imagination could be a Dutchmen and a Brit on the wall 4) The painted areas on the floor are orange 5)  There is a logo on one wall with 7 stripes which looks suspiciously like an old MIAA conference logo I've seen.  6) towards the end there's a shot of the ceiling, without the metal girders this looks alot like the current roof at Anderson.

I know there are some people out there who might know the answer to where this gym was or is located in Kalamazoo.  Any help appreciated.

I am pretty sure that the old film is of Kalamazoo's Tredway Gymnasium. From what I understand, Tredway stood pretty much on the exact same location of what is now the Anderson Athletic Center. I think Old Knight could probably confirm this one way or the other.

I'm 99% sure that is the old K-College gym.  I wasn't sure until late in the video when I saw the padded post just out of bounds!  I made a recruiting trip there back in 1973-74 when Ray Stephan's (?) was the coach.  Needless to say, I wasn't impressed with the facility and ended up going elsewhere but Coach Ray was one of the nicest men around.  That video brings back a lot of memories!

Thanks for the quick responses, I appreciate it, I suspected it was an old Kzoo gym.  Does this now exempt K fans from ever complaining about the Holland Civic Center again?  ;)

In other news, Jim Schipper was the head official at the Class A quarterfinal in Lansing tonight.  By head official I mean he took charge, by taking charge I mean he made all the calls.  By all the calls, I don't mean all the calls but most of them.  Rockford played a great game but K Central is just a little bit better.  They might win it all.

It seems kind of appropriate that my year began with a random encounter with John Beilien, that it might end with a random encounter with John Beilien.  I'm now convinced he's the most aproachable Michigan coach ever.

It's been a really, really long time (so long that I had forgotten the old gymnasium's name) but that's definately Treadway (not Tredway) from about 35 years ago. Everything from the clock in the far corner, to the platform above the scorer's table make it clear that this is the old K College gym. I can still smell the dank moisture that invaded my nostrils every time I entered the locker room located in the bowels of the ancient building. The video appears to be "highlights" from an intramural game. I'm not quite sure, but it may even be my Calvin intramural team's challenge game against our Hornet counterparts. At about the 2:20 minute mark of the video someone swishes a very long shot--a shot so long the shooter can't even be found within camera range. This was a trait reminiscent of OldKnight who was well known for putting the ball up from the locker room door, occasionally even before exiting.

BTW:  Where does sac find such obscure stuff anyway?

I had the same thoughts.  Sac, you are either really good or you have too much time on your hands!  It's a bit scary to think that my kids may find some tape of me playing in short shorts and long hair!  Oh well, I'm sure it will all be back in style by the time I have grand kids to view such stuff!

Good job Sac!

Another clue regarding the old Kazoo gym are the other logos on the wall next to the Hornet logo - there is one of the Alma Scot (from the '70's) and the Albion Briton.

I had no doubt the video came from Treadway but it's pretty much confirmed at the 1:05 mark of the video where a closeup of the scoreboard plainly shows "Kazoo" underneath the "26."

Did someone at least hold the locker room door open, or were you really showing off? :D

It depended on whether the future Mrs. OldKnight showed up.
