Nate Snuggerud of Zeeland East East to Hope College.  Watched him play at Cornerstone's open gym today.  Nice get for Hope.  Will need to beef up if he wants to hang with the big boys

I'm not sure he will contribute a lot as a freshmen but his coming is welcome news to GVW for the following 3 years. A good and much needed announcement for the Flying Dutchmen.

Has anyone seen the Calvin JV this year, and have an idea which JV players may be able to move up and help the varsity next year?

Stephen Bell has posted the following on Bank Hoops:

"Sexton point guard Jordan Howenstine to Hope."

Jordan is a 6'1" guard, that was ranked 21st amoung point guards by GreatLakesHoops

21st among guards that GreatLakesHoops follows...........counties immediately around Lansing, Saginaw, Flint.    A fairly small area, fwiw.

Despite following most of the high school action around Lansing this year I didn't get to see Sexton play.   Sexton was one of the 2 or 3 better teams in Lansing and ranked #7 in Class B before the tournament, but were upset in round 1 of the districts.  Drew Valentine was their best player and he's headed to Oakland, Nate Duhon was their 2nd best player who returns for his Sr. year next year.  So  I think Jordan was down the pecking order at Sexton High a little.

Here's what Stephen Bell had to say about Jordan back in September.......

Jordan Howenstine 6-1 Sr Lansing Sexton
Howenstine's team had nine players. But whenever it would sub, the kids would make sure he wasn't one of the ones leaving the court, because they knew with Jordan in the game they'd be seeing the ball. That's a point guard for you. That's not all. Howenstine's quick, long and has good grades and test score. Now, if we could add jumpshot to that list ...

I'll also add that Stephen Bell had Jordan #20 on his pre-season list of PG's

sac

Hot off the presses even.........

Another Oakland County guard, 6-4 Scott Rogers from Waterford Kettering, will play in the MIAA, but not in Michigan -- he's going to Trine.

Mr. Bell  had him #8 in the pre-season, fwiw just 2 spots behind Korey VanDussen.........but he did not garner all-state honors.

Mr. Ypsi

Since the MIAA baseball board seems kaput, I'll ask here: who the heck is Zack Greinke?! :o  He did a complete-game 3-hitter (1 unearned run) against the Tigers tonite.  No KC Royal should have a 4-0 record, 0.00 era, with 36 Ks in 29 innings!  That just ain't the KC Royals! :o

He freakin' thinks he's the 2006 Justin Verlander! ;D

(or, perish the thought, the 1976 Bird. >:()

Calvin had a recruit last year that they were high on: Ryan Scharps, 6'7" 205lb center who supposedly turned down a scholarship offer at Palm Beach Atlantic to come to Calvin. But he was injured so they put him on JV and I'm not sure how much he played.

Lincoln Fox (G), Lane Waters (G), and Matt Capel (F) all made a partial transition to varsity last year.

As DK mentioned, Scharps seems to be the most promising member from the past season's JV squad. He played a couple of games early--putting up some good numbers--before suffering a foot injury (I think a stress fracture) that caused him to miss games well into January. From the little bit of play I observed of Scharps' game, he has good footwork and appears to be an excellent scorer around the basket. I expect he will contribute quite a bit next season, presumably as Mantel's backup and understudy. The only other JV players who caught my notice were Brian Haverdink (6'3") and Marcus Whittaker (6'2").

Haverdink surprised me in a pleasant way when I saw him play in the first official game ever at VanNoord. He played for Mickey Phelps at Holland Christian and while I saw him play several times for the Maroons, I barely remembered him. Apparently he had a subpar senior year in high school but he looked like varsity material to me when I saw him play for the junior varsity. He has a nice body, a nose for the ball, plays aggressively, and like most players who prepped for Phelps, he confidently puts the ball up when he sees an opening from the perimeter. Whittaker is an athletic pogo stick who might contribute on varsity but he needs to bulk up a bit. At 6'2" he's undersized for anything other than a guard spot but I don't know if he's fit for the wing position. He might be a classic "tweener."

Long time no post!  I've been watching, but haven't wrote in a while.  Anyways, I was enjoying this nice weather on the deck with some brewski's, when a friend of mine who knows some people over at Adrian said they are hot to trot on Mark White for their new basketball coach.  Sounded to me like it is a done deal.  I guess former player, coaches down in Detroit, a proven winner.  I guess we'll have to see their website here in the next couple of weeks.  This year is probably shot for recruiting eh?

For those of you that don't know...read above....this would be a great pick-up for Adrian College.

Good to hear Scharps may be able to help at center.  I was hoping KVS could land Snuggerud to back up Mantel this year and step in next year, as there isn't much size on the roster. Sounds like Scharps may be able to fill the role. I would think finding another C or PF would be a recruiting priority this year and next.

Pardon a non-basketball interruption, but Hope has just announced they will break ground on Friday for a new soccer stadium, on the site of the current soccer fields.

"The stadium will accommodate an estimated 1,400 fans in stadium-style and bleacher seating.  There will be accompanying terrace areas for picnicking and tailgating.  There will be a concession stand, public restrooms, a first aid/training room, two full locker rooms for Hope's teams, a meeting room for visiting teams, a ticket booth and a press box.  The field surface will be of artificial turf and there will be stadium lighting for night contests. "

You can read the entire release and see some renderings of the stadium at this link:
