Pardon a non-basketball interruption, but Hope has just announced they will break ground on Friday for a new soccer stadium, on the site of the current soccer fields.

"The stadium will accommodate an estimated 1,400 fans in stadium-style and bleacher seating.  There will be accompanying terrace areas for picnicking and tailgating.  There will be a concession stand, public restrooms, a first aid/training room, two full locker rooms for Hope's teams, a meeting room for visiting teams, a ticket booth and a press box.  The field surface will be of artificial turf and there will be stadium lighting for night contests. "

You can read the entire release and see some renderings of the stadium at this link:

You should not have made that public...now the Calvin boosters are going to have to build a more expensive soccer complex in two years.  ;)

ok, ok, let me jump in before too many dead horses get hurt.  There was a 2005-2006 Calvin Engineering senior design team that was putting together plans for improvements to the soccer field including press box, restrooms, and concessions.  I don't know where soccer field improvements rank in the pecking order, but they couldn't hurt.

Its the "wait and see what Hope does" strategy. ;)

As a booster, and the parent of two former soccer players at Calvin, I can tell you that I've been part of discussions about soccer field improvements for more than 8 years -- and they apparently rank in the current administration's pecking order just ahead of improvements to the football stadium.  :P

FWIW:   I recall reading or hearing at one time the new tennis and track "indoor" facility is large enough for a soceer field.

I'll forward that on to Mike Illitch, he may want to revive the Detroit Rockers in GR.

Rocko would be happy to be employed again.

As reported on isideprepsports.net late on 30 Apr

Another great athlete has made a commitment to come to Calvin.  Adam DeYoung of Unity Christian High School in Hudsonville decided to turn down football scholarships from GLIAC schools to become a mighty Knight, where he'll pursue basketball in the low post as a shot-blocking presence and will also participate in track and field as a shot-putter.
I'll defer on the details of this young man to the nearly omniscient oldknight, who has seen him develop over the past few years.

Schoolcraft HS 6-foot-8 Center Mike Betcher is off to KVCC.

I'm not sure who that guy is but a similarly named board poster has his own opinions about the kid. DeYoung is an immensely strong, thick legged, 6'6" mostly immovable post whose upper body blots out the sun when he walks by. He was a terrific two-way lineman on a very good high school team and he weighed in at 250 during football season. He spurned a full ride from D2 Hillsdale, and an only slightly less than full ride from Coach Kreps, in order to join his sister--a varsity volleyball player--in the Calvin athletic family.

During last season's high school hoops season Adam was clearly more of a force on defense and the boards than he was on offense but I'm very intrigued by his possibilites as a D3 player. It's not often a D3 school gets a hoopster with his combination of size, strength, athleticism and work ethic. He clearly needs to improve his footwork around the basket but he's no stranger to hard work and now that he has the time to concentrate primarily on basketball we might see him develop into a really tough inside player. I would categorize him as a true diamond in the rough. I would think it would be best for his development to have him start and play major JV minutes rather than put him on varsity his first year.

The person most disappointed by this news might be Snuggerud who fought three major, old-style WW II-like ground wars with DeYoung this past season. Snuggerud clearly is more advanced than DeYoung on the offensive side of the ball but Nate's body paid dearly every time he made a foray to the basket against Unity Christian. Just when he thought he had seen the last of Adam, it's now possible Snuggerud will play as many as 10 games against the kid over the next four years. I didn't see the exciting district final between Unity and Zeeland East (having left in favor of an extra mai tai or two), but in that game they played to a standoff with each getting 15 points and Snuggerud fouling out in the process. All in all, I would say this is long-term good news for the Calvin hoops program.

Not sure why Adrian hasn't made an announcement.......but Stephen Bell has moved from one line statement on his forum, to this write-up on his mlive blog........I'd say its a done deal.

Mark White to Adrian College
Posted by Stephen Bell April 27, 2009 19:29PM
Detroit Southeastern coach Mark White, who built a state championship powerhouse at Detroit Renaissance and was in the process of doing the same at Detroit Southeastern, is moving to the college ranks. He will be the new head coach at Adrian College -- where he was the MIAA's leading scorer back in 1988.

White coached eight years at Renaissance, where the Phoenix won three PSL titles and the 2004 Class B state championship, and had finished his second season at Southeastern.

I saw the UC-ZE district final, and I'm not surprised Calvin recruited DeYoung. He has size and strength, which the Calvin roster now lacks. DeYoung missed a couple bunnies in that game and was not real polished, and I think you have accurately characterized him as a diamond in the rough. With a year or two of experience,  though, he could give Calvin a lot of help in the paint. He will complement nicely the guards and wings in this year's class.

From yesterday Lansing State Journal.

Goldynia will join the crew team.  Major in Environmental Science and Pre-Law.

He looked into playing basketball at Kalamazoo College, but was ready for something different.
